Shikoku before and after pics.
hey everyone, hope all is going well with all of you,
i was just wondering if some of you shikoku owners could help me out and post up some puppy pics (approximately 4-8 weeks old) and then some pics of them more grown up.
im trying to get a good idea of how much their colors change as they get older. do they lighten up a lot or perhaps get darker? (like edgewood's sachi, very nice pup!)
thanks in advance, this would help in the pup choosing process. the temperament would be most important of course. anyways, i might be choosing one soon but unfortunately for me they are all red sesames ( i was hoping for a black sesame). they seem to be a little on the darker side based on a few pics i have seen so far, so thats a plus. i do have first choice since i have been waiting for quite a while so ill make my decision when i head over there to see them in person. if not then i guess i keep on waiting!
cheers!

How she looks now?
She's the kuro-goma in this video.
Jesse
She's quite the tank and has a very sturdy build. I was quite apprehensive about what I would get when I was getting her, but I knew I'd be safe with Goma/Kurogoma's if looking at beautiful Shikoku's like Inuyasha are of any indication. ;-)

Miko at 3 Years old (GOD I can't believe she is three!)
InuYasha at 8 weeks
InuYasha grown
Aww, thanks Jesse!
looks like they get a little darker as they get older, good to know!
i may finally choose one this time around. ill most likely go see them in person soon and then choose a pup.
the litter i will be choosing from will be from yamato and kimi. they sure are great looking parents.
Here are a set of photos of my Kuma as a puppy and then as an adult dog. He definitely got darker, especially around the face. But he will always be a red sesame.

And of Sachi as a puppy and as an older dog (you know about her color change). She was registered red sesame but turned into a black sesame. She is InuYasha's full sister (same litter) and was lighter than him as a puppy but is about the same color as him now.

iirc, inu and sachi are both kimi and kuma pups right?
looks like ahi was always dark to begin with, very nice!
all the pups in the litter were red sesame so i hope ill luck out and they darken up as they get older like inu and sachi did.
After Sachi changed coat colors, Katja spoke with a long-term Japanese breeder of shikoku who gave her a better idea of how to tell coat color -- which is basically looking at the skin color around their anus. Black sesames will have a dark skin even if their coat is lighter (like Sachi's was).
@Brada1878 - Jessica and I should feel left out - no comment on how pretty our dogs are (really, I am just pulling your leg :-). All 4 of your shikoku are beautiful no matter if they are black sesame or red :-)
@edgewood, haha!, Sachiko has a special place in my heart.
In these two it looks like her coat has some black hairs
P.S. We can blame Katja when our shikoku puppies chew on our shoes. ;-)

how dark is the skin supposed to be?
btw is anyone here also picking a pup from this litter?
the pups look great!

I saw the pups a few hours after they were born, and Katja has been great with tossing a few pictures via email; hard to believe how quickly they change.
Of all the pups 'before and after' above, Sachi's change appears the most dramatic; from red at birth, to the darker coloring of both parents. Kimi herself is registered as a red sesame; so she is another that changed a lot from pup to adult. I think they are all beautiful dogs!
The other day I had a little guy on his bike with training wheels spot Yoshi crossing the field at the park with me; he went "Ahhh, Wolf", and made like mad for his parents further down the trail.
Most people make a guess that the Shikoku is a wolf/husky when I meet them out and about; though one lady thought Yoshi was a Shiba...he still has some winter coat and tips the scales at close to 45lbs...one heck of a monster Shiba...
@brada - cool! i just noticed your email addy there on the last set of pics.
got any tips/suggestions for me? hehe
which one do u think would end up being closest to a black sesame?
@cmpteki - lucky you to have seen them already, i cant wait to get down there sometime this month, are u going to be taking one of these pups home as well?
i didnt know that kimi was also registered as a red sesame, maybe these guys will go through a color change as well!
