Kilbun

edited November 2012 in Other Breeds
Well, from the oops litter with Kilbe x Kaiju, we decided to keep the firstborn, and after MANY name changes, ultimately settled with Kilbun.

Here are some pics of him.

If you could see from his photo, he has a lump on his lip which was NOT an allergic reaction. In addition, Kaiju kept licking under Kilbun's armpit and so I noticed he had another small lump there. Odd. Anyhow, he went into surgery today to have the lumps removed. The vet was concerned about the mass (it looked odd to him) so they are sending it off for a biopsy to make sure that it is not cancerous. Poor boy is NOT happy. He got home at 8pm and they had put a drain in his lip and armpit, he looks horrible, I feel so bad.

Also, Kaiju was so curious and anxious? about him he kept pawing at the door trying to get to him and did not move. Finally, I let him in and he went to the crate and kept trying to sniff and lick him. But the odd thing is Kilbun growled at him and kind of lunged and barked at him (to go away, I guess). kaiju was surprised because he skittered back. Should I be concerned? Kilbun has never acted this way towards Kaiju before and I don't want their relationship to go sour.

Anyway, besides for the masses, Kilbun is a happy puppy. He already learned how to sit, lay down and fetches. He has really bond with my fiance. I really hope nothing is wrong with him.

  • He's a handsome little guy, really liking the name too! As for him being defense that doesn't sound too alarming. He just got back from the vet correct? So he was probly in some pain and needed alone time, as for Kaiju being curious that's most likely due to him smelling like a million other dogs and things from the vet. Sounds normal.

Did that lump end up being an actual mass removal or was it a cyst that was lanced and drained? I assisted on a large cyst exactly like that except on the other side of the mouth. Poor dog wasn't brought in for over a month and it had already "popped" inside the mouth and slightly drained, but was still accumulating a ton of fluid that was being retained. They came back after a week and it was nicely healing and didn't impact the dog's features at all.
  • Cute pics. :D

Sorry about the lumps kinda odd for such young dog?

Bella had one removed from her chest, but she was year or year and half I forgot..

I like the name too never heard of it before.
  • @cezieg--it was an actual mass removal. :(

Anyhow, the Kilbun did well with Kaiju this morning. Kaiju went back to trying to hump him. Somehow, his drain came out last night, so I have to go back to the vet to get another one put in.
  • Oh I'm so sorry that this is happening to him at such a young age. That's just terrible.

I wouldn't worry about him growling. Perfectly acceptable, and I'm sure Kaiju would've done the same thing so he probably took the communication well.

So we finally got the results from the biopsy. He has soft tissue sarcoma. Even though the vet took it out, there is a possibility of recurrence. Chemo is $6k but with him being so young, there is a possibility of many developmental defects.
  • So sorry about this. :( I hope he's OK and it doesn't come back.
  • aww...poor Kilbun. :(

Poor little guy. I'm so sorry this happened. :'(
  • Thank you, I am just glad we kept this little pup (I didn't want to keep him for the longest time). I would have felt really bad if his new owners got him like this. Anyhow, we are not going to do the chemo, the side effects are just too much given a 50% success rate. I would rather he have a happy short life than a horrible life.
  • That really sucks, poor boy :( Is there risk of the litter mates also getting this?
  • @calia-- I asked the vet if is genetic and he cannot definitively say. There has been no concrete evidence in canines. I guess @brada1878 and @loni, you should check for lumps. It grew pretty fast though.
  • Oh no! I am so sorry Kilbun is going through this (and you guys of course)! Please keep us posted..... My thoughts are with you all!
  • I'm sorry to hear about it.

In a puppy this young, you sure do wonder if there was a genetic component. I mean, why do young children get horrible cancers? Was there some exposure in utero? It's hard to know without doing genetic tests, but its good the others are healthy without evidence of any masses. Poor pup!
  • @lindsayt and @calia the genetic question is really interesting for sure. At least the owners of kaijus other progeny are on the forum so I could keep track. Kilbun started having this lump at 6 weeks. In addition, I am also going to track Kilbe's future progeny.

But I feel so bad for him and the side effects of chemo are horrible!
  • I'll keep a look out and definitely take her in immediately if I notice something. Poor Kilbun ):
  • I noticed he had another genetic defect today. He has an extra claw growing out of his rear dew claw. @calia--Miyu had this right?
  • Miyu has rear dew claws and extra nails on her front paws, which is considered a fault, but not double dew claws.
