New puppy: tethered to your side while at home?

edited November 2012 in Behavior & Training
How many people has done this with their new puppy? I was watching a few dog training videos and a few mentions to keep your puppy tethered through you as much as possible to strengthen the bond between you and your puppy. Some say for a year.

When I took Sasuke to his behaviorist, she suggested this as well. The puppy gets more freedom around the house, your relationship with your puppy is increased, and it's easier to avoid incorrect behavior by rewarding the good.

  • I've done this with Tikaani and Miyu when they were pups, and it really helped immensely with housebreaking and keeping them out of things. I don't think it really made much of a difference with bonding, what really helps bonding is full on interaction and not the mere fact of being stuck to someone for a few months. This doesn't have to be a 24/7 sort of thing, but more for if you know you won't be able to give the pup 100% of your attention.

How often did you keep your puppy with you?
  • I have done this with active dog(s) who is/are a pest with other dogs. Early on it was no more than an hr at a time and then back into expen or crate.
