@ Thegela she will improve dogs are born to adapt it might take her a minute to get the memo. It's okay if she loses focus quickly, I'm not sure what Jen sent you and don't want to counter it, she knows her stuff, but if it doesn't, make every second she's focused on you the best second ever. Pets and a playful voice and treats and Happy! That might make her want to stay focused.
@cdenney Yeah.. we're definitely trying our best, but t's so hard sometimes! Even if we just pick her up to go potty, (recommended by Jen, so Hana can at least potty) she won't because she's so scared. She'll move backwards, or pull to go back inside. She's immune to happy voices and pets when she's outside. All we can do is be patient from deeeeeep within, and continue to try to get her used to going out.
@wrylybrindle Rescue remedy for you, is this only the Rescue flowers or all the range of Bach flowers? Because here, Rescue remedy is only for temporary stress.
A friend of mine do give "confidence flowers" for a Mastiff dog of her who was afraid of mens (during two month). It had great result.
Rescue Remedy is a combination of some of the calming bach flower essences- not all of them. It is the most commonly used of the Bach essences and very few people here understand or use the rest of them. You can find Rescue Remedy in stores and catalogs, but rarely do you see the range of flower essences sold anywhere. It is easy for a dog owner to find and use RR to try, than expect them to find and research (and buy into) the whole flower essence thing to combine their own.
Ok I understand ! It's like that here too ! We must order it online ! The problem is that Rescue is not ideal for certain case... I saw all de essences of Bach in a store at Paris Last year ! It's was great !
LOL - I was thoroughly homeschooled in Care of Magical Creatures by Sage the Dog (who I am sure is an honorary Hufflepuff-majoring in Defense Against the Dark Arts. He detects evil and the unseen.), and to help him I followed every lead, every branch of every trail which led me to some strange places. Rescue Remedy didnt make any difference for him, and I am not sold on flower essences myself (perhaps I didnt do well enough on my Herbology NEWT), but some people have noticed a difference, so they certainly dont hurt to try.
Effectivly, bach flower dont do great all the time (too bad ^^). I heard that it depend of people. I know someone who has to take by 10 times more of flowers for it to do an effect !
We got lots of snow today. 30 cm? And it's still snowing. Here's Hana squatting the best she can, and a photo of her and her best friend, Mia spooning.
@hinata23 Hana and Mia are SOO cute together. They really love each other.
That's the strange thing about Hana! Sometimes her tail is down, and it's obvious that she's stressed and afraid, but sometimes her tail is up but she still pulls hard to go back home. This was one of those cases. As soon as she was done peeing, she wanted to go back in! :T Strange girl.
Maybe she just wanted to pee. Would she poop in the house if she doesn't poop in the morning? Maybe you could take her out for a quick pee breaks and have her take longer walks at night (less traffic) so she can go #2.
@hinata23 Yeah I think she just wanted to pee. She's really good with holding her poop if she doesn't do it in the morning. (unless she's stressed, it's gotten gross a few times...) Oh yeah! We've been doing that! She much prefers night time potty walks. That's when she is sometimes willing to go a little bit farther to search for potty spots.
haha yeah! Her tail is what I would usually read too, but I usually just try to read her mood through her behaviour and body language. (ie: pulling hard in one direction means: I want to get away from a particular area/spot - even tho her tail is up.)
Keep doing what you're doing (pee breaks during the day, poop at night) and see if she improve when she realizes she's not going to be forced to stay out longer than she wants.
@thegela awwww its puppy love. does hana have an overwhelming need to hump every dog that is friendly to her?
@hinata23 ive been trying to figure out the n tail, when their tail was up but falls only on the end to look like a lowercase n. usually her hackles are down but she seems interested. what does the n tail mean to yall?
@cdenney You mean the tip of her tail touches her back verse staying high up? Is her tail a sickle tail:
or a curl type tail?
Goro has a curl type tail. But when he's bored or .... feeling indifferent it raises up and looks like a sickle tail. When he's excited and happy he curls back over his back. When ChoCho is SUPER excited and happy her tail curls at the tip. So maybe Sachi is extra excited about something
OH! Are you talking about when the tail falls behind them (not over their backs)?
Yeah Goro does this too. He does it when we are either trying to put the harness on him on when he seat the nail clipper. It's he's "Oh Crap!" and depressed tail.
@WrylyBrindle YES! I realize what she was taking about after I responded! LOL Great video!
For Kitora and Kunai, @cdenney I take it as an "eh, whatever kinda bored" normally they do it when we are just all hanging out, nothing really going on - they look out the sliding door and nothing really going on there.... As soon as we say something to them it goes to wagging. Just my interpretation....
I think the tail on the Kai is indicative of mood, but it is not always that clear to read. Leo's tail is straight up when I put the harness on him, but he also HATES his harness, and he also freezes in one position, so it's both he's excited, but also anxious. I've seen him do that in other situations he's nervous in: the first couple of times we took him to puppy classes, for example: tail straight up, but he was clearly not comfortable either. So....I don't know. (Leo has a sickle tail, not a curly tail, btw).
@Cdenny....I don't think I can quite picture the lower case n tail? Picture? (sorry I didn't see the rest of the discussion--I guess this is just the lowered tail?)
I'm not sure I've seen Leo do it. He's either straight up or kind of straight out or down. (One thing that cracks me up is if I scold him for something--ie. the "nanana" sound which means stop jumping on the counter or table or whatever right now), he drops his tail and his ears go sidewise and he gives me this seriously wounded look like "you are so mean to me! I was just trying to steal that one thing!"
(and I think Leo's dropped tail in this case might be the lowercase n tail? )
Sachibobatchi is sickletailed and it is as if her tail was straight up but she let the point drop to the ground while the base is still up or horizontal. I'll try and get a pic but it makes her whole backside look like an n.
@cdenney haha well she's only met one dog she's really liked. She also met our friend's male mutt, but didn't seem very interested. Altho I don't think that's an accurate assumption because it took Hana a few meets with Mia for her to get comfortable and play with her. She doesn't hump Mia anymore tho, (hasn't in a while) because I discourage it. Whenever Hana starts humping me, I also try not to encourage that because she's started doing it to other people and I don't want her to get into the habit of that. (Interestingly, she only humps girls....)
Here's a few happy updates of Hana's habits. I've only been posting "negative" non-fun things, so I thought it would be nice if everyone got to know some of Hana's cuter habits for a change.
Hana has started doing this.. "love bite" nibble thing, and it is SUPER cute. She only does it when I'm wearing long sleeves, or on my torso on top of a shirt or sweater, so she's only nibbling on the shirt. When I'm wearing a tshirt, and my arms are bare and she feels skin, she'll change it to just gentle mouthing, so I appreciate her sense of "gentleness". Sometimes when she's nibbling on me, she gets too excited so she pinches really hard through the shirt and it's pretty painful. Cute, but painful, so I've also started to control and keep in check her level of excitement when we wrestle so she doesn't get carried away.
Hana also loves sticking her nose in my pockets and having a good whiff (nothing in there tho) when we wrestle. I don't know why she does that, but it's pretty funny.
If I blow on her coat, she'll get the zoomies and will start to pounce and play with me. She's super duper cute. (I have a video of Hana doing zoomies on our bed... I should try to upload that)
She's also started playing with toys I've gotten her. Her favorites are ones that aren't dog toys but those cheap toys you get from carnival games. She loves ripping them apart spilling their cotton innards. (My eyes are always on her when she's playing with toys so she doesn't eat/choke on anything.) Dog toys are a little more durable, so she tends to play with them less, and will just whip her head around with the toy in her mouth. (Also have a video of this...)
Hana also sometimes thinks she's a cat. She has a tendency to forget that she's a dog and likes to climb and sit on awkward places. When I'm doing work, she wants to sit on my lap, but that's not happening (she then wants to climb on top of the table and do the work for me) so I put her behind me and she'll take a nap, meanwhile I'm trying not to fall off.
One of her nightly rituals is to always step on my hair and try to push me off my pillow, then get comfortable and nibble on her feet a little before falling asleep. If it's not on my pillow, then it's in the middle of the bed somewhere and my husband has learned to be a contortionist and fall asleep around her so he doesn't bother her.
When she dreams, I think she dreams happy dreams because her paws are always twitching/running and sometimes I hear a tapping sound, and I look and see that her tail is wagging. (Hopefully the running dreams aren't nightmares :S)
Am I a cat? or a Dog? Trying to balance while standing on my friend's hair. She's in pain, but Hana don't give a sh*t. I asked Hana "why so guilty?" and my husband replied: "because she formatted your computer" This is Hana snuggling behind me on my chair. Murdering Domo, the carny toy.

We are actually looking into getting Hana a friend. She seems to really enjoy dog company. Our options/dogs I've always wanted: HOKKAIDO (altho... really difficult..) Shiba (male) Samoyed (female) Another Kai (male) Jindo Poongsan (also difficult) --- Maybes: Shikoku, Japanese Akita,
Love the pics! And we were just talking about how Leo loves to get on the back of the sofa, or on my pillow and step on my hair (then stick his tongue in my ear! Ick! He tends to do this more to my husband than me, though thankfully!) And yes, the climbing on things! Leo also gets on things: table, desk, bookcases, window sills, and sometimes I can see he can barely get his body balanced there, but he's trying to look casual and cool!
Also, I saw the lower case n tail yesterday! I was at a friend's house (watching Westminster!) and Leo had been playing with her dog, who was tired. So Leo was still alert, still kind of play mode, but no one was doing anything, so he just stood there for awhile with the base of his tail still in excitement mode, but the rest down because we were all so boring.
