Artificial Grass for Potty Training

So I'm sure you've all seen products like the "Potty Porch" and others. The basic idea is that it is a litter box for dogs. The most basic variants have a mat of fake grass sitting in a plastic frame. Some have grates and drains, gravel beds, scented pee posts in the shape of a fire hydrant, even a tiny sprinkler system. Some are made of wood or metal or look like quality furniture. Some are collapsible and supposedly portable.

Anyway.... I don't intend to use such a thing for every day stuff. Its just not necessary for me, and I can just imagine what would happen if Ghidora tried to pee within that tiny little patch.... he'd get my whole wall!

But I've been thinking about puppy puddle pads, how quickly we go through them when we start potty training a litter, and how expensive they are. I also recall that at least one of my pups in the last litter (was it Kaylee @king_bidgood?) associated the soft texture of the puddle pad with carpeting and began peeing on the carpeted areas of the new owner's house.

So what does the forum think about starting the puppies on fake grass instead of puddle pads? There are plenty of options which are no taller or bulkier than a normal puddle pad frame. I think they'd get used to the idea of going to the bathroom on grass from a younger age, be less likely to go on soft fabrics, and I will save a ton of money on disposable pads. I don't see a downside, other than having to wash the grass/frame frequently, which I already do anyway.

EDIT: I think its also a bit cleaner than a puddle pad. The pads are only a millimeter thick at best and moisture just sits on the surface of it. The added depth of the fake grass will prevent puppies from lying in their own piddle.

  • I know some people who have complained that they get too hot if they're left in the sun but besides that they seem to like them.
  • I worked at a pet products store for years, and I remember when we first got the puppy grass things. Everyone bought them and I considered getting one myself...until I saw all of them come back. The customers said their dogs didn't like them and wouldn't potty on them at all! Maybe they would work better for puppies, but I ended up sticking with the floor diapers (as we affectionately call my Shiba's bathroom). I get them from sams club and have no problem with absorbency for my full grown Shiba (she has outside issues). Plus, the grass has to be cleaned out, with pads I can just pick up and go.

added note: the typical customers I saw were using these to prevent having to potty train and actually walk their dogs... Heaven forbid they have to take care of the living creatures in their house! My dog just has a strange fear of going potty outside... Little weirdo!

I hope this helps, and please post how it works for you if you do decide to give the grass a try! I'm curious to know how it works when a responsible person uses this product! :)

Ive been trying with Kona, and she does NOT like it for some reason...she sits on it and looks up at me like "WTF am i supposed to do on this ting". and she potties on command, but when i tell her "go potty" when she's on it, she just looks so upset. After a while she just curled up and slept on it lol.

They have attractants for it too, but she just started trying to eat the grass it was on.

The moment we went outside and I said "go potty" BAM! no problem, as usual...I wonder if some of it has to do with her not being ok with going inside anymore (I wanted to use it as an option for her to use while she's home alone, but we video her and while we were gone, and she woke up from her nap, she just started shredding the grass). I tried to see if she would even go on the pads anymore like she did when she was a puppy, and she REFUSES. I left one of those for her at home too if she needed to go, she just shred it to bits and scattered it everywhere like confetti. xP I guess no more going inside for her (which is good, but i feel bad for her holding it while we're at work).

BUT, I have heard it work for some people. This is just my personal experience with Kona lol.
  • Well... you could buy a piece of live turf from Home Depot...
  • I think it depends on the dog or puppy if it works. If you have it from the first day you get the dog it might work as they will be used to it always having been there but if you add it in later they might get confused as to why there is some outdoor stuff in doors. I looked at getting some of this for my pup I found some on amazon but read the reviews and most of them said their pups either wouldn't use it or chewed it up. Given the highly mischievous chewing that Keiko is doing at the moment I thought it best not to risk her chewing it and swallowing some of it when left alone. So we just use the pads when we aren't there and she is fine with those although I agree they aren't always the most effective at holding the pee as they are so thin.
  • Sadly, the photos never transferred so the thread below is not as useful. However, someone on the shiba forum built their own. It gives you a bit more freedom, and using real sod is probably less confusing. I believe it worked pretty well.

  • @mdokic @StefJackUk I am referring to doing this with a litter of pups, starting at about 4.5 weeks old. Not an older puppy or adult who already has some experiences to relearn.
  • Ah yes sorry :P I think with the litter of them that young, you have a good chance at them taking to it since they're not told to do it one place or another :) The only thing I can think of that might be off putting to them is the box itself...the ones I've seen (and been using) kinda look like they are a little unstable and make noise when they move around, so I could see how some pups may find that scary. But then again, since they'll be so young, I feel like you can teach them that it's not scary and they will take to it :)
  • Oh sorry :\"> I don't have much experience with litters of young pups but I would imagine that starting them off so early would definitely enable them to get used to it and use it regularly
