I'd just liked to know if there is anyone else here at the forum who is training their akitas for competition obedience. It would be nice to have other people do discuss this with
Hi Martin. You're not getting much response here, but I would just suggest putting in some discussion topics. There are folks out there training in obedience with other nihonken breeds (or other breeds, as well). I don't know that you necessarily have to limit it to the Akita.
I have not done formal obedience competition, but I have attended novice obedience and rally classes.
We have worked on the following: heeling, figure 8s, sits, downs, recall over a jump, fronts and finishes (left and right), pivots, stays out of sight, introduction to dumbell, send-outs, etc.
I'm curious to find out too how Akita would do in competition obedience.
Our "basic" obedience with Aki starts in Nov. So far, I find Akita to be moderately obedient and circumstantial too according to my own personal expectation.
I have only tried one thing that our trainer mentioned they do in training for advanced/competition obedience. That his to just drop a command like "sit" in the middle of a normal conversation with someone. Kuma sat instantly although it was said in the same tone as he were talking (me and the trainer). I don't think I'd be as successful now, since we don't train as often as we used to at the time.
At the moment we are working on almost the same things that Sarah wrote about. With some difference it's the same as what's in the obedience class 1 here in Sweden. The reason for asking just for akitas is that it's pretty special to train an akita. I have no idea about how it is to train any other nihon ken.
Yes I'll keep you updated with the progress. I can tell that much that Viggo is really good at this. I've heard that the akitas are soooo hard to train, almost impossible. But a couldn't agree less with that. Actually there are two akitas at the course. One can easily see that Viggo has been doing this before, I practiced some this summer, compared to the other akita. But the other one is a quick learner
Tomorrow it's time for the third session. It shall be interesting...
We had a new training session today. I must say that I'm really proud of Viggo and how well he does after only a few sessions. Yes I do train with him other times than just Saturdays but not that focused as we are on the Saturday sessions. Nice too to see him play with one of the other dogs after we finished the training. He is learning more and more about how to behave with other dogs.

I'm glad to see that your dog and you are progressing and bonding closer together.
He is the best!
