Howl....

edited February 2010 in Behavior & Training
Musashi did something very odd last night. At about 3 or 4 this morning he let out this old school wolf howl. There were no sirens (he doesn't care about those anyway) or other dog noises. He just felt like letting one rip. He did it once before over the summer, but hasn't made any noise since. Anyone else have a beast that does this? Any explanations?

Every AM they wake us up with howling and every time we leave they howl. It seems to be something they do when they are feeling abandoned or lonely (if dogs really feel those things).

    AM Howling...

    Random howling...

Yes, Kaeda does...and sometimes we do it together. She also does it when I am making dinner, and of course I encourage her by giving her food.

Interesting vids, but not quite the same. It started really low and went up to the normal wolf howl, not super loud or high picthed, there also wasn't more than one break. He did about 3 sets lasting no more than 30 seconds total. And he NEVER makes sounds like this. Warning woofs, intruder (legit) barks, and play snarls are about all that comes out of him.

Another thing to note...not 5 inutes ago we had 2 earthquakes, nothing serious, but the house did move. I wonder.......

Sorry I do not have any video -but Kaeda starts as her soft semi-bark followed by a low gurgle growl into the last ahhhwoooooooo. I will see if I can get her to do it tonight.

haha, all those howling videos made Sevuk go crazy. lol :) there has only been 2 incidents where Sevuk has howled, and they both happened as he jumped up from his sleep...it was very strange

mine howl sometimes. usually in the summer when they can hear the coyotes at night.

My boys howl whenever there is something really exciting or when the other dogs howl. It's funny, Tetsu sounds like someone is strangling a cat.

Lynxiene howls when she is feeling lonely and abandoned. Last night we stayed at my dad's house so she woke up in the garage this morning and started "calling" to me via howling.

Shoushuu and Kotomi have howled when there is an "intruder" on the property or potiental nearby threat.

Both howling vocalizations are different and I can tell what they are "saying". Though, it is very rare for any of my dogs to howl...so when they do it, it's for a VERY specific...possibly Earth-shattering reason =).

Skella howls when she's separated from me and she wants into where I am. Tojo's "intruder alert" bark is kind of a howl... it's kind of like rrrroooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwww! The closest Rakka does to howling is the singing she does when she's experiencing barrier frustration, like when there's a rabbit outside.

Kuma howls on occassion. Usually when I am outside the fence and usually as he sits on top of his dog house. It is very odd sounding.

Reilly never howls. Sage howls with sirens

He also makes a lot of interesting "talking" noises: garbles, mumbles and huffs, in addition to a range of barks, whines and purrs. He has more vocabulary than any other dog I have spent time with.

Oh man, those are awesome! The call of the wild! :-)

Hihi, here's my baby in his once-a-year-howling-wolf posture. He could hear the lady coming by to receive the money for the electricity bill. I had my leg in a cast so I had to put him in the crate to open the door. I have no idea what he was thinking LOL

This is all we could get out of him since he was a pup (he's not talkative at all)

In all my life NONE of my dogs have howled EVER. Not even a little one.

Bella my parent's boxer howls when I play the harmonica and Saya only howled three times. Once as a pup and the most recent one was a few days ago she doesn't howl long just a little bit.

    @saya: aww that's so cute.

I like the way that New Guinea Singing Dogs "sing" when they are in a group.

Solomon roars occasionally. Only if he's woken up by something that really weirds him out or if he's super pissed at another dog--the latter rarely happens. Its' not a howl. It's a long bark that says, "Back off or die." He is bluffing.

Our dogs howl every day between 5-5:30PM. Not sure why, but all of them do it.

Maymay howls anytime she is left alone. She also howls in her crate if I don't get her out on time in the morning. There's no sleeping in at my house anymore. Koda has never howled. I don't think he will.

edit: I just lied. Koda used to howl with the fire truck sirens when he was just a little puppy around 10-14 weeks old.

last weekend I was at a dog show and they were playing the national anthem. All the shibas joined in a chorus of howls.

OMG I wish I was there to see that must have been cute Saya yodals, but I don't really consider that a howl or maybe it is I dunno.. lol

That just sounds so cute. =)

Josephine has never howled to my knowledge... Joe, our former dog, howled loud and long to every ambulance siren he heard. Sometimes a variety of neighbor dogs would join in the chorus. The funny thing was that he never howled to a police or fire truck siren. Different pitch?

Oh, and Brad: Your first video of the dogs howling at daybreak made me think they may be all just "wanna-be" roosters... Or maybe there is a rooster in the neighborhood that they hear to set them off? When visiting Quatemala a few years ago with my daughter I remember being awakened every morning by a wide variety of roosters, and then some of the guard dogs started in, too, although I recall that all seemed to be barking, not howling... It was strange because we were staying in Guatemala City, but even the family we stayed with had a few chickens running around in their compound in the midst of the city so no doubt there were lots of others, as well....
