Thats right those vids did have Kais. Although the Kai in the second vid doesn't seem too intrested in the hog. The Kishu and the other one that looks like a Yakushima ken or a yushoku Kishu is getting into it some what. Wth is that Kishu eating???

What state do you live in Marc? Your state may have a huntable population of wild hogs. You can also hunt Deer and rabbits with Kais although it really depends on your state fish and game reg's. If you state allows it, best option is to find some private property that you can hunt on to train your dog.

That kai looks like he knows he's a stud.

That face clearly says, "Don't f*ck with me!" LOL ~

The link that Gen posted is a friend's kennel, Tenrou Kensha. He shows and hunts with his Kai. I thought of getting one from him when I was looking for a pup, but he charges quite a bit for pups. He was showing that male last Tenrankai, but it never seems to do very well. Very nice color, but if you see the dog close up its face is not as masculine as it should be IMO. He's a bit small as well.

The Kishu in the video Brad posted is Baron and Taro's brother Tetsu. The video was just posted yesterday, so I'll have to ask about the Kai, though I know Tetsu's owner has showline Kishu and breeds Kai on occasion as well. Not sure if he hunts with his Kai.

Cool, thanks Shigeru. I agree with Gen, that Kai was only mildly in to that Boar... but I was just interested if you knew the Kai.

Can't see much of what's going on here, but this is a friend's Kai on a boar solo. Smaller pig obviously, so he went in for the catch.

Thats sweet! I had no idea that was Tetsu, he is looking good and going after a good size hog at 7months old is really impressive. Man our dogs come from excellent lines!

I live in North east NC near the coast, my grandfather owns 100 acres of wooded land i can go hunting on
  • edited November -1
Dude NC has good amounts of hogs and if you cant find a good place, places like georgia, SC is hog heaven. 100 acres!! Dude you are golden, scout that piece of land and look for tall tale signs like rooting, droppings, bedding areas where hogs might be. If nothing else you have some prime trophy whitetail deer property. You could always use a NK to hunt raccoons or you might even have bear in your neck of the woods.

I use Riki to hunt black bear although not as successful like hogs but we did manage a nice brown phase black bear awhile back.

Marc, follow the link below on information for hog hunting in your state, looks like there are small populations here and there.

That link is a bit dated Gen. The book was published in 91 and most of the things it cites are from the 60s and 70s. I'm pretty sure there's a much greater distribution of hogs in NC now than there was in 91.

Bear hunting is really cool. The hard part is training your dog to chase a bear but once you get your dog in a area that has bears for it to see and chase, your dog should get the clue to chase. Only other problem is how the dog is going to alert you once the bear is tree'd. You could get in touch with some hounds men in your area that will allow you to run your dog with their hounds so the experienced hounds could teach your dog to bark on tree.

the bear my dogs got was a total luck. We were out for hogs ina area known to have bears so I took a bear tag with me. A few miles into the wilderness, Riki started to act really funny and would bark and stop, bark and stop, over and over again and when i got there I noticed that every time he would stop barking, he would try to climb the tree. When he is on a hog he usually barks a constant bark and if he catches a hog the bark will get a bit shorter and intense.

So things like this will teach you what a dog is doing. Riki is a bobcat killer and same thing with bobcats, he would bark and stop bark and stop. it will take you a bit to almost "be at one" with a really good hunting dog. If you hunt with a dog long enough, the dog will tell you what its doing just by its barking.
