Mai Tai and Kaito
I would like to introduce two new Kai in the US that just flew in from Japan a week or two ago.
First I have Mai Tai she has been very fortunate and has been very healthy. She is a big girl that weighted in at 12.5 pounds last week. We see her as full of energy, smart, healthy and very friendly. She loves people and has enjoyed everyone she has met so far. She is like a Houdini she escapes from everything and is off and running. She kind of has this sweet and innocent look where she just sits down and smiles like she is posing for a picture, I believe she is observing and planning her next moves after what I have observed so far, then all the sudden she will fly up almost over the fence, tree a squirrel or steals a toy from another dog. I have seen her after missing the top of the fence go sit further back from the fence think a minute then make a running start to jump over it, too bad for her but lucky for me I prevented her from flying over that time. I know I could be a wacko but I am thinking she is really thinking out her moves so she is accurate and precise. I have also witnessed a few things at feeding time that make me think she has the other pup Kaito figured out.

Second I have Kaito whom is a littermate to Tai who lives with Brad and Jen. Kaito is a cute little boy that looks browner than Mai Tai and our older Kai Kailee that is a littermate to Kona that also lives with Brad and Jen. I am hoping it means we will see lots of brindeling as he grows older. Kaito weights 15 pounds and loves to play and gets along great with other dogs and people. Boy was my husband proud when Jonathan our nephew who speaks a little Japanese said boy, you guys must have some fine puppies because everyone is commenting on how good they look, we heard even more so for the male pup. We have only had him a few days and he comes to his name but that is thanks to Shigeru and all of his wonderful care and training while he stayed with him before we made our trip to Japan to pick him up. I think Kaito is missing Shigeru some because one of the neighbor boys that comes over to visit the pups is closer to his size and Kaito follows him to the fence when he leaves and watches him go which he does not do to anyone else that comes to visit and leaves. It is very sweet to see.
My husband and I have Shigeru to thank for getting us these most wonderful puppies for us they are everything I ask for and more. They have helped our Kai Kailee feel more confident around people other than my husband and I they are a true blessing and are welcome additions to our family.

Besides finding and caring for these wonderful puppies Shigeru took my husband, my nephew and I to the Kai Ken Aigokai Tenrankai Spring 2010. I had met Haru two days before who was the second Kai I had ever seen, she is gorgeous, I love her coloring and temperment. Shigeru picked us up at the Hotel nice and early a little before 5:00 am and we headed off for a few hours’ drive when we arrived in Yamanashi at the Love River It was a beautiful day and there were already some Kai and their owners ready for the show. It was so exciting to see the Kai I had to pinch myself to see if this was really a dream; within the hour the place was filled with Kai I could not believe it. I was surrounded by Kai and their devoted and proud owners it was totally amazing.
It was such a cool feeling to walk through the crowd of people that all had a Kai. There were Kai Ken everywhere and I enjoyed seeing every one of them. When I saw them before in pictures I would think that some of them looked pretty much alike and sometimes could not tell one from another just seeing about four different looks of Kai Ken. At the show seeing so many in person I could clearly see each one has its very own look and not one of them looked the same to me. When my husband and I spoke we were saying “woo look at that one” not “that one looks like the other one” like I was assuming would happen. I feel so lucky to have been able to have had the amazing opportunity to experience attending the Tenrankai. This unique opportunity has expanded my view, understanding and appreciation for the Kai Ken they are truly a treasure to be preserved, protected, admired and enjoyed. I feel extremely blessed to be as lucky as I am and be able to bring two Kai puppies back with us to Oregon. It is a dream that come true thanks to Shigeru.

It has now been a week since I wrote this I have just had problems posting because of my skill level. This week has been full of fun with Mai Tai and Kaito. On Tuesdays the neighbor boy and I started Puppy classes, Kaito was very quick to catch on and Mai Tai is younger so she took an extra try, they both seem to be very smart a quick learners. They both seem to love doing their homework and are going to make me proud at class this week. Knowing that the puppies were coming I knew I could not carry three to the car so I worked on loading up with Kailee so with the garage door open she will wait until I say ok then comes out of the house goes to the back of the car and loads up into her crate keeping her eye on me for direction. Note she keeps an eye on me because she has mistaken my ok before and has gotten sent back into the house to wait again for my “we’re going to load up now - ok” command, I then treat her after she is in the crate. I can’t really believe it yet but it looks like Kaito has watched her a few times and has started to load in the crate and he has generalized it so he is going into the puppies’ car crate, wow, I am thinking I have some very smart little puppies. They love going for walks and do great on the same leash with a splitter, we had a really good time taking all three of them to the 2010 Pet Fair they were the hit of the fair. We met only one person that had seen a Kai Ken before, it happens to be Kona that she had met at a show in California with Brad and Jen. Taking them all to the dog park and giving the puppies their first baths were entertaining events too. They are super friendly and have great personalities and are more entertaining than watching TV or playing video games by far. We feel so lucky we got them they are perfect and have adjusted to the change wonderfully. On top of being perfect puppies they have done wonders for our Kailee she is showing more confidence and is allowing people other than my husband and I touch her at times, she accepted lots of treats from lots of different people this year at the Pet Fair compared to last year without the puppies. Don’t get me wrong they are normal puppies that chew, bit and everything else puppies do. They are just so exceptional I over look that stuff and I think about how lucky we are to have such great puppies knowing that they will be grown up no time and all their puppy behaviors will be just memories.

My only regret is I did not get any good pictures or video of Shigeru and Hara at their debut they looked great in the show ring, Haru had a great stand and is gorgeous.

Look forward to seeing the pics! & congrats! I'm sure Shigeru showed you a good time. :) ~
Sounds like a wonderful experience! I wish you the best of luck with your little monsters.
The pups look great! It's fun to see Nori's sister, Tai's brother, and Kona's sister all in one thread! )
Man I wish I could have been at the Tenrankai! Those pics are amazing, some of those Kai are breath taking. I really like the blocky heads of a few of them!
Thanks for sharing!

Congratulations on the new pups! Mai Tai sounds just like my female Maymay. Everything in your story is something that Maymay will do in just an hour. She can really get herself into some trouble. But her white spot is just like my boy's. I love that little white spot on him. Ofcourse, now that he's all grown up you can't really see it anymore.
Thanks for sharing your story and all of your pics. Keep them coming!
I have no idea about the breed other than what I have seen on this forum so thanks for sharing the photos etc.
Snf
K > Kbr > ky
K = dominant solid black
Kbr = less dominant brindle stripes
ky = recessive normal color (no black added)
There is some unknown modifier that makes the brindle stripes appear differently from breed to breed though. Thin, defined stripes vs. wide, blurry stripes for instance.
In the Kai, there's most definately the Kbr gene in the breed. I'll bet that they have the K gene in the breed. I'll venture that there may be ky in the breed but rarely found homozygously.
These are my newest guesses on the genetype/phenotypes in the Kai :
K K = solid black
K Kbr = mostly black with slight brindle
Kbr Kbr = more even distribution of brindle
Kbr ky = red brindles

Have you ever come across a red Kai with no stripes? Not cream but red?
LOVE that last pic! btw. ~
I have a question, though, but maybe for Fester Fairy, or Shigeru. In the first post above, pic # 33 under the heading of "Pictures at the Tenrankai" there is a dog with an apparent Kai face and build, but the cutest tan lower legs and feet. Is this a full-blooded Kai, with a recessive trait maifesting itself in the lower extremities; or just some "ooops--" accident of cross-breeding? It is a beautiful doggie, but I'm curious to know the variation in the Kai coloring.
Ayk, I've heard that if you keep breeding aka-tora's you'll end up with almost full reds. Not sure if that's based on assumption or fact.
They are really super cute. My Kai, Koda, seemed to gain confidence as well when we brought in another Kai, a female named Maymay. He started trusting humans more. He used to only let "his people" touch him, but now will let most everyone and has become really social with strangers. He doesn't bark at people anymore on walks either.
I think that Kai's do better in a home with multiple Kais. This could also hold true for Kai/Shiba or Kai/Shikoku homes. I wouldn't know personally.
Dave ~ Thank you for posting the pictures for me it was a great surprise when I got home to work on fixing them, how the heck did you ever do that is what I said. I have been trying different ways for a week or two now and was disappointed and embarrassed when I finally got the post to take and it did not show the pictures. Thanks again
Brad ~ I know the whole Nori ordeal was hard on you and Jen to say the least so I was just avoiding it till more time has passed but I guess just seeing pictures of Mai Tai might be just as bad sorry. I do want to thank you for sharing the information on the forum it has enabled us to know what to watch for signs of and share the information with her Vet, trainers and others.
Nori was Mai Tai’s only littermate. They were Megu’s first litter sired by Riki the 2009 Fall Tenrankai Grand Champion. Magu took 4th place at the Tenrankai she delivered the pups on January 20, 2010 in the later afternoon Mai Tai arrived first with Nori arriving 20 to 30 minutes later the breeder reported the births to be quick and uneventful.
Shegeru ~ Thanks for the tip, answers and most of all thanks for the wonderful puppies.
Tara ~ I agree Kais are smart and the puppies sure seem to have helped bring Kailee out of her shell. My husband were observing the play and talking about how happy we think Kailee is to have the family additions.
I do think that some Kais behaviors remind me of some of the children that I work with that have autism and my Kailee is one of them. When we were in Japan this is the first time she was away from us for a length of time and she lost 3 pounds in 6 days (she gained it right back when we got home) and was just starting to feel comfortable when we got back and these were people she had seen many times before. It did take her awhile to adjust to the puppies but she seems to really enjoy the puppies now and would probably have a few fits if they left. The puppies have grown so we had to adjust the car kennel situation to fit in three of them consequently it has caused Kailee’s kennel to move and she is having a tizzy over it this week. She is refusing to get in the car I give her the verbal choice to stay home in her kennel or get in the car kennel then she will let me put her in the car then screams loudly when we leave and most of the way to someplace and is fine on the way home but will not load herself into the car. We have tried changing her kennel to a wire one for better vision only to hear more screaming, biting wires and if one of the puppies look at her too much she snaps at them then continues to scream. My husband is beside himself and wants her to be able to sit on his lap or whatever makes her happy. I am the mean one that says change is hard but change is our friend. And just like the kids at work the screaming is getting better everyday just a week more and she should be happily jumping in her kennel in the car on command again and riding quietly (cross my fingers).
I will be trying to move to the Kai Ken folder.
