She's finally here! Kai Puppy

edited August 2010 in Kai Ken (甲斐犬)
I have waited years for the right time and opportunity to get one of these amazing dogs! I was on Marsha from Mijikai Kennels waiting list for like 3-4 years, and finally sent her a message a couple months ago that I was ready and would love to know when she thought she might have a litter again, so she fowarded my info to Rita, who had Flyer, who just had a litter of pups out of Pam at Royal Kennels stud Player. And to my surprise I now have a beautiful little Kai, it happened so fast, but I couldn't ask for better timing!

So I have a few pictures I took , though they aren't the best, I'm no professional! But I am saving up for a new camera.

Here she is at 7 weeks....

She is 10 weeks old today and doing GREAT! She got microchipped earlier in the week. She did have a minor heart murmur when I got her but when we took her in the other day it was gone. She's absolutley brilliant! She knows sit, lay down, roll over, and we're working on stay. I'm thinking about enrolling her in puppy classes sometime this month.

Oh! I do have one delima though....she has NO NAME yet! I never thought it would be so difficult. So far we have been thinking about maybe "Mika" or "Kyoko" though I'm still not sure. I want something pretty and unique, but also simple. Does anyone have any ideas?

Aww she is just precious. Congratulations. No help on naming her, it took me a month to name my kitten and a week to name my puppy lol.

Cute puppy! She is just precious and I think you will really enjoy your life with her. Looks like she has bonded well with your other doggie, too.

As for names, of the two you have in mind I like "Mika". I agree a simple name is best... my kids thought it should be just one syllable in the ideal for a doggie to have good recall. Don't know if that is true!

How about Leila? No reason for the name... it just came to mind...

She did have a minor heart murmur when I got her but when we took her in the other day it was gone.

I have heard this before with several Kai pups where vets have said they have heart murmurs and they do not. I wonder if this is just how they develop or if vets just mess up.

I think she is precious! I saw the pics of the litter when Rita posted them. Flyer and Player are both amazing looking Kais. Congratulations!!!! I like Mika as a name. :-)

Congrats on your new Kai pup, she is super cute. I love the classic Kai sleeping poses, they are so funny with their odd sleeping positions.

Thanks everyone! I think we're going to stick with "Mika", though it could still change! I like the sound of "Kyoko" but it seems like a bit of a mouth full and not as feminine as "Mika". We're working on her recall training, I'm not sure if I should get a whistle or what would be best yet, but she know's "COME here" and follows when I ask.

Heart murmurs are a puppy thing. The vets aren't wrong...a lot of puppy are born with a very soft grade 1 heart murmur that usually goes away by 3-4 months of age. I can't tell you why some puppies have it and some don't, but my vet mentioned that it's a genetic thing, and most all puppies grow out of it. The lady I board my horse with breeds dogs (Golden Retrievers, Daschunds, Bernese Mountain Dogs, and Newfoundlands), and sometimes a puppy will have a heart murmur (she offers to take the puppy back for a full refund if the vet finds even a slight murmur), even though it could be gone by the next week. lol

I wonder where her other 4 sisters are....

Thanks, I plan on getting her certified with TDI once she's old enough and had a very good amount of training and socializing. It would be wonderful if I could show her, even a little just for fun, but with school and work I don't have time to travel during most of the year to do it. Oh, and I have to get her spayed lol So that makes it pretty much impossible. But maybe after I get things together a bit more, in 5 or so years, I can devote more time into showing a Kai or two, I fell in love with the breed years ago, and I doubt I'll ever fall out of love with them. :) But I might look into doing something else with her...I was wondering...has anyone ever done SAR with their Kai? Would they be good at airscenting and tracking?

Spayed females can compete in the Altered class in the UKC. :-)

I think Shigeru (TheWalrus) knows some Kai in Japan that do SAR work.

My male does some tracking. Just novice stuff, but our trainer has always been impressed by his focus and attention on the task at hand.

    @Ayk, That's good to know!

I'm looking into finding a trainer to work with Mika (other than the trainer lady at petsmart..who is actually pretty good), who can help train her to do different things like tracking and agility, as well as basic obedience. It's turning out to be harder than I though..
