Average age for NK females to come into season for the first time?

Hi All -

So, I'm starting to get a bit nervous about Kumi, she has not come into heat yet. She's coming up to her 7 month old mark.

All our past NK females have come into season at 6 months, so I expected Kumi to do so when Loa and Masha came into season last month... But she didn't.

Has anyone experienced their NK, specifically Kai Ken if you own one, coming into season (for the first time) later than 6 months? Not counting Akita, they are a large breed so I wouldn't be surprised if they came in later... but these medium-sized breeds, I would expect the first heat to come by 6 months. I'm worried.

Thoughts???

  • Lucy was almost 8 months when she came into season. And she's tiny!

I think five months is probably a bit young so it's no surprise that Loa and Masha didn't pull her in.

I always thought that it was pretty normal to take up to 12 months for the first heat.
  • What Dave said is what I've heard. Also, I know my vet mentioned 6 months is the usual spay age as by the time most females haven't come into season yet.

Is she on RAW Brad? Is she growing slowly? I know with RAW, the dog grows slower / more naturally & doesn't experience quite as many dramatic growth spurts.

I wouldn't worry yet, until you hit the year-mark.

Each girl gets hers at a different time in their life ;) ~
  • There was a posting on the kai yahoo group a while back about a female coming into season at 9 mos. old for the first time. She is a breeder and they were really excited that everything looked good. It was a good time ago since she was bred for the first time this past April, but I do remember 9 mos. I wouldn't be worried about her not coming into season at 7 mos. old. I know that not worrying is easier said than done with such a jewel though.

Ok, thank you guys, this makes me feel better. I've wanted all our breeding dogs to work out for us and when they don't its uber-disappointing but with Kumi... Well, I would cry if something came up that prevented us from breeding her. For me, she's like the perfect Kai female. I love her.
  • I would definitely not worry. I think the average for a smaller breed female is between 8 and 10 months.

I think I would also cry if something came up with Kumi. She is definitely a gem. :)
  • I think a lot of us would cry if something happened to Kumi. She seems perfect in every way!
  • I have been told it can vary ....one of my Shibas did not come into heat until around 8 months and when she did it was very very hard to tell. We did not wait around for the a second cycle and had her spayed so can't help you on more details.

    Snf
  • Yuki's a Kishu ken but she came into heat really late. She came into heat around a year and two months. Had her checked out when she was about 9 months but nothing abnormal, just a late bloomer I guess. I once heard of a Hokkaido female that came into her first heat cycle at a year and a half!
  • Brad; Josephine came into heat about 10 months or so, I would judge. In fact, we were checking around with vet brother-in-law and a few local vets to arrange spaying and thinking we had time as we expected her first heat about the year-mark. Then surprise! Anyway, I think you are OK with Kumi... Did I tell you she's beautiful, and we would like to have her come live in MN?
  • Ok, well it sounds like I shouldn't be worried then. LOL ... Doesn't mean I'm not! But I will do my best to not stress too much.

@baanton - Sorry Bev, Kumi is staying right here with us. One day maybe I can send you one of her pups tho. ;o)
  • Sachi came into heat in Mid August and she was born early January. So about 8 mo
  • Ife's first season was at age 6 months and since that seasons have been very precise. Cycles has been six months. I wouldn't worry until she turns year. One of my mum's schipperke female has very irregular seasons, first was at age 1 year and month and then only once in the year.

I have heard that odd seasons are more primitive dogs problem. They are so close nature. Friend of mine has two female Thai Ridgeback, older's first season last five weeks! And her house looks like a abattoir when girls are in season.

OT: We had the coldest winter for a half century. My cousin works in horse clinic and also breds horses. In spring there came many one day to week old fillys who had heart problems. And usually they died. The vet started to think reasons for this. Reason might have been the extremely cold winter. Mares had to take care for their own thermoregulation so nascent filly's circulatory hasn't developed well. So have you had any unusual weather's there? Might it be one reason?
  • Kailee Kona's litermate went in to heat at 7 months and has went into heat about every seven months after that. Kailee just went into heat and I think it might have pulled Mai Tai into her first heat she is 8 and an half months old.

Kotomi came in at 9 months of age (first cycle).

Her cycle is VERY irregular by the way...
...she had her 2nd heat cycle 4 months later
...and then her 3rd cycle 10 months after that.

She is gonna be difficult to breed as she probably also will ovulate earlier or later then the *average* female -sighs-.

Nothing is *wrong* with her...just some bitchs are very unpredictable while others come in very routinely without fail =]. My Malinois is like this...very regular & very predictable!
  • Thanks for the info.

Loa has an irregular cycle too, she came in first at 6 months but from then on it was all over the place. Her second one was a split heat too (so I'm told).
  • Kaeda was 7 months also. We have been at 6months and just had another at 7 months.
