Ever wonder if a Kai would be a good duck dog?

Read on to find out....

Tyson is now approaching a year old and he's maturing beautifully. I took him along with the Shibas for a hike around my favorite secluded spot yesterday. It was 35 degrees, but sunny and a overall a beautiful day. We got off to a bit of a rough start when Joey threw up all over Lucy in my truck due to excitement. Then Tyson, while I was cleaning it up at the trail head, decided to lift his leg and pee all over Lucy and the leashes. Then, to add injury to insult, I slipped on the leaf-covered mud and ate it hard. I did save my camera from a muddy doom, so you guys get to benefit from some spam. :-)

Even though it's out of focus, I love this one of Ty. You can see how much muscle he has:

He spent some time checking out the water, trying to make a decision:

After a quick dip, he did his usual victory lap:

Then, we proceeded around the lake and he found some ice. What's this stuff? It's holding onto that stick I want!

He decided to inspect further. I love this shot...it's so "Kai" to me. Out in nature, carrying himself beautifully, ever vigilant.

Then he realized he could break through the ice to get his favorite sticks and such:

This makes for one very happy Tyson!

In unrelated news, Ty's head is starting to fill out. I've always felt like his head was a bit on the narrow side, but in the last few weeks it's grown significantly. He's a handsome dude!

Yeah Ty, you did great! :-)

  • P.S. To answer the question...Yes, a Kai can make a great duck dog!
  • Wow! Looks like a lot of fun (minus the first paragraph...) And yes, Tyson is definitely maturing into quite a handsome guy!

One of these days I am going to make the trek down to meet you guys... (and fall even more in love with Kai's!)
  • Oh these are all so classic Kai! What great shots. I love the first one because it looks like he's smiling. They really do love being out in nature. I always feel so good about taking May and Koda out and about. It's when they are at their happiest, and I'm sure it's when Tyson is at his. Thanks for sharing these. They made my morning, and it's been a long one already.

Koda's head took a bit to fill out too. It will catch up.
  • You DID done good, Ty! :) love the series...
  • He's looking great! Such masculine features, his ears are shaped really nicely imo. I don't remember, is he going to be used for breeding down the road?
  • Hey @kwyld!

To answer your question, Ty is still intact. I plan to keep him that way for the foreseeable future. While I have no plans or desire to breed myself, if he passes the appropriate health checks I will make him available to stud if breeders are interested.

I also agree that his earset is really nice. Overall I think he is a fantastic looking Kai, but I'll readily admit to being biased. ;-) If I was forced to be critical of him, I'd fault him for his conformation in the front a bit. He's slightly backward-leaning in the front, so he looks like he's high-stepping all the time. I'd say that's a relatively minor fault though. :-)
  • Damn bro, Ty looks so good. I love that sashi tail, he really screems stud Kai for sure. Ok so you know what this meansnow right......road trip to Canado for a duck/goose hunt. Or a timber duck hunt in Arkansas.

Dude I'm waiting for either some horn porn or some feather porn. Get out and start the kill'n!
  • Working on it Gen! I just had a solid month of craziness at work. I even had to pull an all-nighter for the first time in ages. I felt like I was back in college. lol. Come the first of the year, we'll be at it full force!
  • Aww poor Lucy! Ty looks SO GREAT in those shots! He is so handsome!
  • Yes, poor Lucy. She got the worst of it by the way it sounds.

    Tyson looks great!
  • Oh by the way Dave the Chief at home gave me the green light for turkey season as long as I can afford it. Start scouting and find where that big old tom is roosting. I will provide all the gear!
  • @shishiinu - Great! Let me know the dates ASAP.
  • Ooooh maybe we can get Shigeru to come out at the same time!
  • Hey, Dave.
Ty looks good. He IS really handsome! I enjoy reading your Tyson hunting training tales.
Yeah, getting puked and peed on in one day would have been enough for me. Poor Lucy.

Hey, Gen, is it legal to hunt turkeys with dogs where you are? I know in many states you can't shoot turkeys out of a tree, but here in Indiana you can shoot them however you want. I would love to have Tuula tree me a turkey. She did early this fall, but it was stupid of me to let her off leash where we were. Her recall SUCKED at that point and I couldn't find her because she wasn't treeing persistently yet.
  • Kevin

we can but the only way to hunt turkeys with a dog would be during the fall season. Dring the spring it will be almost impossible. Most people hunt spring birds by calling the toms in. I think sing a dog will just keep the birds flying and make it hard to nail one.

The words "puked and pee'd on" takes me back to a day when I drove the paddie wagon to the drunk tank full of drunk college students. Fortunately I wasn't the one getting puked and pee'd on! It was like a puke/pee orgy in the back of the puke wagon.
  • Ty looks great Dave!
  • Was it me in the back of the truck? College was rough. he he
  • Sheesh, poor Lucy.

    Ty looks absolutely studly. Literally.
  • He does look great, those are some good action shots!
  • Great pics Dave, he's looking real good! :D
  • He's so handsome! What a great looking dog!
