is this a kai?

Here's a dog at Blue Moon Akita rescue in Colorado who they describe as a small, black Akita (or maybe a akita/chow cross?). I wondered if you all thought she was a kai? http://www.bluemoonakitarescue.com/index.php/adoptable-akitas/articles/380.html

there's also a video of her playing with other Akitas here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=UnkH3EhPwVU

Interesting if she was....She looks like a sweet girl, either way.

  • Well, I'm not so familiar with Akitas, but I would say she looks like a Kai by size, coloration (not so many, if any black Akitas?), and also her personality fits a Kai. I did not notice any black markings on the tongue but could have missed them. Any idea as to height and weight? It's possible she is a Kai mix, as there is something a bit different about her body shape... can't quite pinpoint it, but maybe it is that she still has a bit of the puppy roly-poly look (she is quite young)?
  • I'm going with Chow mix. The head is a bit off for a Kai, and the tongue is Chow.
  • She has more of an Akita head type than Kai, so I agree with the Akita/chow mix.
  • I'd also agree on chow mix, the tongue is clearly chow ;)
And her build is not really kai-ish IMHO... She could look like a mix of american akita and chow to me.
  • Don't forget that Kai have black tongues too.
  • Not like that though. That is a Chow tongue. The black is more see through and mixed with the pink of the tongue looks different. Kais black spots are black. You can not see through them. I seem to explain this a lot to people. Ha ha
  • I was curious what you guys thought--thanks! Not that I could get her anyway--beyond the 3 I already have, that rescue doesn't like me because I have Shibas, but I like to check in on their dogs periodically anyway. She's cute though! I'd consider her if the circumstances were different. I think she's 9 months old?

BTW, my chow mix that I had years ago had a purple tongue. Not spots--all over violet colored like this girl. I should have noticed that in the pic!
  • Looks like a chow mix to me.
  • I can see that Tara already explained this, but there is big difference between kai and chow "black" tongues ;)

Kai tongue, the black is not see through. Pink and Black hold their color.

Sorry couldn't link it, but it's a good pic.
  • Chow's tongue looks kinda gross.
  • I think the chow's tongues are kind of pretty! :) Thanks for explaining the black and pink--I was very confused about why people kept saying Chows had black tongues when it seemed very clear to me that they have purple tongues! Now it makes sense!
  • Yes Chow's have purple tongues. lol. It's clear to me too.

Mind you, Koda is an extreme example of spots on his tongue. He probably has more than umm all the Kais in the US, but it makes him a good example.

Mei only has 3 black spots.
  • I want to thank you, shibamistress for posting the Kai-Ken look alike at Blue Moon Akita rescue. Turns out I'm going to adopt her. Her name is Nina, and she would make a great playmate for Kibou. She is 15 months old, Kibou is 10 months old which is exactly what I was looking for, and I have been looking on line daily for weeks trying to find the perfect playmate. Looks like I will have he by next weekend. Thanks again!
  • Well that worked out wonderfully :D
  • So cool when paths cross like this. Yay!
  • Yay! I'm so glad! I look forward to hearing more about her and seeing pics of her! I really wanted her too, but I can't adopt her, so having someone from the forum get her is the next best thing!
  • That's so awesome! Congrats! ~
  • Well I have had Nina for about 2 weeks now, she is not a Kai, but a Chow-Akita mix. You can tell the Chow in her, the back legs are are tollaly straight when she standing. Her toungue is even purple color, no spots. She is a sweet girl, I can put my hand in her food dish while she's eating with no problem. She loves giving kisses to me all the time. Kibou and her play for hours and have bonded well. She is a lot longer and taller than Kibou. She weighs 44 lbs, kibou is 39 lbs. Nina is a good match for Kibou, she is a bit tougher and rougher, Kibou is the gentleman, while Nina is the roughneck.
  • Aww glad to hear she's working out great for you guys.
  • Yay! I was wondering how things were going with Nina! We need pics!
  • glad to hear the 2 are getting along so well.
  • Very glad to hear this! :)
  • I'm late to this, sorry Dave! Congrats on the new addition, that's awesome! An Akita x Chow mix will be a good addition to run off all the wild things too! :o)
