Shikoku Dog Site

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to let Shikoku owners know that I put up a registration site for you to register your Shikoku dog. You will find it at www.shikokudog.com under the "ownership" tab you will notice a small heading SHIKOKU DOG REGISTRY that will link you to the page. I plan to track the number of Shikoku dog in North America in hopes of starting a strong breed club and data base. All info will be kept confidential of course.

I also started a page for "Shikoku of the Month". I encourage owners who would like to participate to send me a photo (or two) of their Shikoku dog along with any info/story they would like to share about their dog on the website. Each month a new Shikoku dog will be featured.

I am hoping this will help to bring a greater sense of community and awareness to our efforts in the preservation of the Shikoku dog in North America.

Thank you.

  • Great idea, Peggy! And thanks for putting it together!
  • LoL, awesome idea Peggy, the site looks great...Do people who got pups from you also have to fill out the form, or are they automatically registered?
  • Everyone is asked to use the site to enter their own info Thanks!
  • Very good Peggy! I will work on getting you some information! :-)

  • Great idea about the registry. As part of the data base, ask folks to give you their microchip #s for their dogs. This might help in the future if a Shikoku goes missing and winds up in a shelter. Maybe they can list you as an alternate contact person, since there are so few Shikokus in North America and a Shikoku could easily be mistaken for another breed. (Just a thought, after having dealt with some Shiba rescues.)

    Great idea, thanks.
  • Great idea and nice site. Is it only about North America?
Is it possible to see the register online?
  • Very nice idea! Site looks nice as well!
As stiiina asked: Is this only for NA shikoku owners?
  • I thank everyone for their nice comments and support. I am not a frequent visitor to the forum so I apologize for not thinking more on a global scale.
I would welcome ALL Shikoku owners to participate. That would be awesome to have as many owners involved as possible!

About seeing the register online. There are privacy issues to consider, so I am not sure if all owners are open to their info being posted on the web. Once I am able to start compiling the info, I do plan to put up a map of Shikoku so we can visualize their distribution. There are quite a few of you that have submitted your info already which is really cool. Thanks!!!

Also, if anyone has anything they would like to see on the website, or any other ideas PLEASE let me know. I welcome your input!

  • Peggy, what type of privacy issues are you worried about?

Pedigrees are a matter of pubic record here in the US and health certificates (OFA and hips) are printed for pubic viewing. In fact the owner can opt out of OFA and Hips being public but pedigree's they cannot.

Think of it this way, if an owner did not want his or her dog on a pedigree then other dogs would have blank spots on their pedigree.
  • Maybe a good intermediary step would be to allow the dog's name and pictures of the dog to be shown on the registry. However, to view the owner's name, then one must sign up for membership into it as well? That way to access information, you too should give up your own?

Though you do bring up a good point, Sean.

  • I would restrict it to dog, pedigree, and ancestors. Save the contact information for members only.
  • She might be worried about location. I know the Kai people are sometimes on the NAKA website.
  • Personally, if I wanted to look at a list of the dogs registered I could care less about the owner's information and more about what the dog looks like, what kennel it came from, pedigree, etc. I'd imagine that if someone new to the breed came upon the website, they would be asking the owner's a million questions if their contact info was listed.

If it's not too much work, on the registry form you could have a check box or two asking if it is alright to publicly post information about the dog and/or contact info, something simple like just an e-mail.

It could even be a bio type profile (like Dogster but simpler) with a description by the owner of the personality of their dog. And under each public dog profile, there could be a form that can be filled out that is e-mailed to the owner with a from address being something like "questions@..." to make it easier for owner's to separate into it's own folder (for those, like me, who love to share info about their pups).

This all just ideas that may or may not help
  • It's funny that we are having this talk right now. I'm dealing with sort of the same issue with a JA registry right now. The current idea that we are looking at is: Making the database open to all. You can add to it but an admin is going to check your work and you're going to have to attach a scanned copy of the pedigree. Members however can just add their stuff straight in. The public non-member side will restrict seing the attached pedigree and other documents like health certificates. Location and contact information is also restricted on the non-member side as well.
  • Website looks great!!!
  • Website is looking fantastic...love all the pictures.
  • Very good website. I registered Rakka and I do think it would be really neat to map out where all the shikoku are.
  • I agree with the map idea. That sounds awesome
  • Very cool website! I registered Panda . . . I think . . . not sure if I did it right :p
  • I was more thinking of a place like PawVillage or Pedigreedatabase. Non of those databases have Shikoku as a listed breed yet and I have asked them to change it, but no luck yet. These are databases where you can enter your dogs pedigree and other information (optional). Main goal is to see pedigrees, parents and heritage. As Shikokus have limited gene pool in Europe (I guess quite same in America), it would be great to see, which lines are in the pedigrees of different dogs and what are the odds of finding a stud or new lines. At the moment this info is very limited.
