Possible Bee Sting?

Portia has a pimple like sore on her lip.  You can see something poked her and it is a little irritated.  It isn't swelling, but it resembles a big pimple.  Im not sure what it is, but I figured maybe a bee sting because she puts her nose down to the ground a lot to sniff and I wouldn't be surprised if she was sniffing a bee on the ground and it stung her.  Is this something I should take her to the vet for?  She doesn't seemed bothered by it, but when I touch around the area she pulls away.  I would take a pic, but I can't seem to find my camera Frown.

If I were in your situation, I would just call the vet and see what they say.  I've called the vet numerous times without actually bringing anybody in.  They usually say it sounds like it's no big deal, but bring them in if x happens, then you just make sure to watch them closely.

You can give Portia Benedryl, but I would call the vet too. There are way to treat it which involved taking out the stinger and a wash of baking soda and water but like people, dogs can be allergic to bee stings. So ask the vet what symptoms you need to be on the look out for to determine whether the situation is emergent. I would guess that the symptoms would be similar to that of a human allergic reaction....

don't medicate her until you sure! the foster basset we have gets those pimple things on his  lips all the time!

ithink its just the way their jaws are formed, when they age they get more skin folds there and it gets irritated, but its normal. sometimes the basset looks like he has a huge white head about to erupt but thats all it is, irritation from the way their mouth is made.

    but check with the vet!

The pics aren't so clear...she kept moving around cuz i was getting super close to her with the camera...but it looks like a big pimple!

Could be a sting. But it's hard to tell. I'd take her to the vet.

PS. I love the first pic. She looks like she's crying and wanting you to take care of her.

Its weird though, because it was gone, and then it came back.  LOL, she was mid-blink and has an eye booger.

Really? It looks like a tear. That is very weird. Oh, do dogs get ingrown hairs on their snout? I know it's a stupid question, but their snouts have very short hairs and they can be pretty sharp, like facial hair.

Oh, maybe...well i just emailed my vet the pics, so hopefully he can give me advice, if he tells me to bring her in, ill take her in.  But it doesn't seem to be bothering her at all and she seems fine.  We'll see...hopefully it is just an ingrown hair and nothing serious. Its just kind of odd that one day it was there and the next it was gone and then its back again...

Romi, I love the annotations. That's in the finest tradition of nerdiness! Smile I hope it turns out be nothing.

yeah that looks like the near-mouth irritation that our foster basset would get. they come and go.. but check it out!!

Hmm...never heard of that...hopefully it is a mouth irrition or something not serious!  It doesn't seem to bother her at all, Ninja and Portia are doing crazy 500's all over the house and up and down the stairs so...yeah.

Dave - Tongue out Just for you buddy!  I thought i'd add a little something something to make it more noticeable.

Couldn't it be from Ninja? They play a lot and he may have bit her lip during play...

Kona has scabs all over his neck from Ahi and him rough housing.

I guess it could be...he does like the chew on her lips a bit..but its kind of high up near her nose.  I don't know...we'll see what the vet says when he emails me back.  Im sure its nothing...well i hope its nothing!

Wow scabs on his neck! What a crazy Ahi!  Kona is quite the rock.

Brad, I was thinking the same thing, but when I heard that it went away yesterday and came back today I decided I was barking up the wrong tree.

the mouth irritation thing - i went to costa rica on a missions
trip, and it wasn't the most shower friendly situation so 3 days went
by before i had my first one and I broke out all over my back.

    gross, i know.

    but
it could be something like that, maybe she or ninja were relentlessly
licking that one spot or she dragged is on carpet playing.

    it
looks exactly like what the bassets - and boston terriers - would get.
I haven't seen it on the shibas because their lips/mouths have much
    more fur protection on them.

So my vet responded and said:

Hi Romi- I would apply some Neosporin to the lesion (as long as she won't lick it off). If it gets worse, then bring her in and I'll take a closer look at it. That red spot looks like it could be an insect bite or even acne. Usually if a dog gets stung by a bee on their face/muzzle, their whole face will get swollen. Boxers have been known to get acne on their muzzle. Hope you have a great day! -Dr. Dave

    I guess ill try Neosporin!

I'm glad it isn't anything serious!

i will now be referring to 'near mouth irritation' as doggy acne!!

i hope that turns out to be all it is!!

  • edited November -1
Lol Neosporin is something that's always in my house. With pain reliever for humans, without pain reliever for animals.

Years ago my cat swatted and was stung by a bee.  Her entire front paw blew up like a small balloon.  I gave her some benedryl and the swelling was gone down by the next day.  A child's dose is good for allergic reactions.
