Great spring break week.

edited April 2011 in Hunting & Working
Took a few days off to take a break from work and regain my sanity in the quiet woods. Wednesday morning I was in the turkey hills to get my 3rd and final turkey at 0500 or o dark thrity. I get up on top of a big hill overlooking thousands of acres. As the woodpeckers and crows start sqwaking, I hear gobbles from different directions but a bit far away. I sit and wait for the sun to come up and as I set my decoys out, I hear nice loud gobble only 70 yards away.

I get sit up quick and get ready. As I start calling at the turkeys, the gobbles get closer and closer. All of a sudden I get another gobble directly behind me and I can see that he is a nice sized tom. I align my gun on the tom as he walks in to my decoys and boom! He piles up and thus ends my 2011 spring socal turkey season.

The next day I take my son to do some fishing. I knew that the area had left over pheasants from a recent put and take pheasant hunt so I took my trusty 20ga side by side and my trusty bird dog Hana. We fish for a few hours as my son out fishes me on big bluegils and crappi. I hear a pheasant sound off on a hills side so I get the gun, dog, and my son and head for the hill. Hana sniffs around a few bushes and I see a pheasant make a run for a big deadfall. Hana follows the scent trail that the pheasant left and immediately find where the bird was hiding out. For some reason I didnt see the bird but Hana flushed it directly in front of me and boom, one shot one bird.

I have to say that it was a great week hunting with friends, fishing with my mini me, and workig Hana. Now hog hunting here we come. Tomorrow will start my pig hunting season with Taro and Koyuki. I have a feeling tis season may be a good pig hunting season.

No no season on hogs, I have to evenly devide the animals I hunt. Hogs can be hunted year round in Cali. My year consist like this: September to november (deer/hogs), november to december (hogs), december to january (waterfowle), january to march (hogs), march to may (turkey), may to september (hogs/tuna fishing). That about summs my year of hunting and fishing although I try to squeez in bass/trout fishing and car racing inbetween the months.

So on sunday I'm leaving for the town of weed in New Mexico for a Merriams turkey hunt. There is supposed to be a camera crew out there filming for a upcoming turkey hunting dvd and a show on TV. We are hunting 4 different private ranches that consists of 27k acres on the small one and 43k acres on the large ranch. Oh and the best part is all this for just the cost of license and food. Every thing else is free. I will be hunting the Merriams subspecie of the wild turkey and hunt hogs through spot and stalk. Once I find a good place where the hogs are, I will end up going back with the dogs.

Its a once in a lifetime opportunity to do this and I get to take two gobblers! stand by for story and pics.
  • wow, that sounds like fun! Mos def give us the scoop when you get back. I wish it was further north, I'd drive down and meet up... Unfortunately I will not have the time to drive way down to weed this weekend as I have some work stuff to deal with. :oT
