Changes in Dalmatian Registry w/ AKC

edited August 2011 in Other Breeds
Thought the breeders on this forum might find this interesting. It has been a long time coming. The Dalmatian Club of America (DCA) finally agreed to allow Low Uric Acid (LUA) Dalmatians to become part of the AKC Registry and the AKC is now working w/ the parent club to add the LUA Dalmatians to the registry.

1) Background information:

2) From the AKC Board of Directors Minutes of 11-12 July, 2011:

The Registration of Low Uric Acid Dalmatians

The Board reviewed the results of a vote by the membership of the Dalmatian Club of America (DCA). By a 55-45% margin, the membership voted in favor of registering these dogs.

Following a motion by Dr. Newman, seconded by Dr. Smith it was VOTED (unanimously) to authorize AKC Staff to develop procedures for the registration of these dogs. The procedures will be developed in consultation with the Board of the DCA. To ensure that the introduction of the Low Uric Acid dogs into the registry is an informed, voluntary decision, the registration numbers for the Low Uric Acid Dalmatians and their descendents will have a letter indicator as part of the registration number.

  • OMG, about time...Hopefully this will open up doors to allowing similar programs in eliminating other breed specific hereditary diseases.
  • I've been following this development. I'm glad they have finally decided to do something smart and let those Dals in. Maybe some other breed clubs will follow suit and help get rid of some of the bad problems their breeds have.
  • Oh, wow! Thanks for passing this on--it's something I've been interested in. Glad to hear they are finally doing the right thing--or at least I think it is the right thing.
  • Great news!

  • Yes, this is the right thing to do.

My first Dalmatian had a uric acid stone blockage. It could have killed him. Fortunately, I noticed that he was lifting his leg and nothing came out! They removed the blockage by reaming it out and put him on antiacid pills to balance the PH. Thereafter, I carefully monitored all of my Dalmatians and their urine output.
  • That's good to hear. Sad dalmatians are prone to this hopefully it can be fixed.
  • That's great! I wish more breed clubs would do stuff like this.
