  • You can add "ko" to the beginning of a lot of things. It means little. Like Gen's dog Koyuki: little snow.

    Some Japanese word for names.
Please note that those words can be different meangs with same pronunciation. For example, Ken means health(健),dog(犬),sword(剣),ticket(券)etc.
And some of the pronunciation is not most widely used one for the Kan-ji(Chinese character) mentioned below.
For example, "海(sea, ocean)" is usually pronounced "Umi" rather than "Kai".

    ☆=Typycal dog names in Japan.

    Male:

    ☆Kai(海)=sea
    Kaien(海燕)=sea swallow(bird)
    Kamui="God" in Ainu language.
    Ken(健)=health
    Ken(剣)=sword
    ☆Kuro(黒)=black
    Kou(堅)=hard,firm,solid
    Kiba(牙)=fang
    Kiri(霧)=fog
☆Koro=A common dog name in Japan.Hard to translate.Maybe "roundness"or "chubby".

    Female:

    Kikka(菊花)=flower of chrysanthemum
    Kirara(雲母)=archaic word for "mica"
Kumi(久美)=lasting beauty.A common name for japanese women.
Kana(加奈)=add(加)+archaic word for "wild apple"or "quince"(奈).A common name for japanese women.
    Kohaku(琥珀)=Amber

  • @mot awesome post!! I like Kana.
  • @tjbart17
    Thank you!
  • @mot. Tank you so much, what a great post.
Think I'll use Koro for my male pup, it's a good short name, and he's a little fat boy right now. ;-)
I like Kana and Kumi too, will use these for the female pups.
    Wonderful help, thanks again.
  • @Tina
    You're welcome : )
I think names you choose for pups are very suitable for Japanese dogs.
Best wishes to your beautiful pups!
  • Kagetora: Shadow Tiger
    Kaibutsu: Monster
    Kamakiri: Praying mantis
    Ken: Sword
    Kisaragi: February
    Kotetsu: Little Iron
    Kurotora: Black Tiger
    Kyoshiro: Big white/castle

These are from the manga Ginga Densetsu Weed.

    I really like Kyoshiro :)

I also like Kamakiri, though it is close to harakiri (which as far as I've understood is the japanese form of suicide, where you stab yourself and have someone cut you head off - okay I've seen too many movies!)
  • Its interesting. Im half-Japanese so naturally I felt like I should have given my dog a Japanese name. In the end I couldnt find a name that didnt match to a Japanese person I knew (btw, i know a Kana and Kumi). I felt like the only reason why I was giving my dog a Japanese name was because he was a Japanese dog. In the end I decided to just name him Blaine.
