Hi, my name is Puller Lanigan and I do Akita Rescue. I have done Akita Rescue on the East Coast for 26 years, but retain an avid interest in all dog breeds, but especially Asian hunting breeds. I am often solicited to identify dogs, people suspect may be a purebred animal. I don't work alone on this and work with others in the breed or breed rescues.

I am currently seeking assistance with two dogs brought to my attention in North Carolina and New York City. We were contacted on as 'Akita/Shiba' was the closest breed the shelters could come up with. I will post these two dogs in a separate discussion in hopes someone might be able to help get them to safety until they are properly identified.

I look forward to being on this forum.

  • Welcome to the forum! I can't tell you how many times my male Kai has been called an Akita/Shepherd mix.
  • Welcome to the forum! My kishus are always labeled as a big shiba.

I hope that we can help get these guys saved!

Welcome. I saw the one in North Carolina last night. Hopefully the information I've provided on Facebook at least gets someone to contact his or her breeder-- if there is one. Usually they want to know if a dog was given up, and usually they want them back.

People always think my Swedish Vallhund is a German Shepherd-Corgi mix. Unfortunately, he inspired a few idiots to think about crossing them. Um, buddy... you're better off trying to cross an Norwegian Grey Elkhound with a Pembroke Corgi. And even then, it would still look weird.

Even Tod, a purebred Canadian Kennel-registered Shiba of 35-40 pounds and 19" tall, got frequently mislabelled as a mix.

Sorry I can't help-- I am on the other side of the continent; and any dog that are "wolfish" in appearance usually get shot at by farmers while out on hikes. The least I can do is forward to different people and organizations.
  • Welcome to the forum!
  • Welcome to the NK forum!
  • Thank you all and thank you Brad for allowing me on this forum. Souggy, a friend of mine who is a veterinarian and avid flyball person has a Vallhund. I met him when he was not quite a year and somewhat fearful of strangers. Very cute guy!
  • Welcome!
  • Welcome, and glad to have someone else doing rescue on the forum! Hope we're able to find homes for these guys.
