  • Hosoda or Mr. Hosoda is the name of the person who start to breed a specific line of Kishu based on its hunting ability and physical build. Now Mr. Suzuki has taken role of continuing the Hosoda line of Kishu kens. I attached a link about some of the mos famous Hosoda line Kishu kens and infomation written by Mr. Suzuki who closely followed Mr. Hosoda's goals on building a near "perfect" wild boar hunting Kishu ken.

  • Here's some photos of current Hosoda line dogs on the first two photos. The dog to the left on both photos are Barron and Taro's mother, Momo. Note the large ears, large face structure, and much more muscular build compared to some of the Kishu kens seen at shows.

The rest of the photos are of more hunting line Kishu kens and you can clearly see that they look completely different from your Kishu ken seen at shows. These dogs also come from famous lines of dogs that have supposedly also have gone to Germany and being used to hunt boars over there.

  • Dang! That Kishu is very muscular. She must be a real badass.
I like the colored Kishu on that website and the photos you posted. I haven't seen too many Kishu with much color on them.
  • @shishiinu - Thanks Gen for the info, that's very helpful. The masked Kishu is super neat looking. Also, Taro's and Baron's mum is cute. :o)

  • @shishiinu, thanks for the link to Mr. Suzuki's site! I'm glad they're preserving the hunting line in the Kishu breed.
  • Shishiiunu, don't your dogs ever get injured? I have seen some footage from other breeds hunting, like a Dogo or Boerboel, but it doesn't happen a lot that a dog has not a few scratches or cuts from his opponents fangs..............some dogs get pretty bashed also.
  • @kimputai, my dogs are pretty smart and (knock on wood) they have yet to come out with any injuries. The dogs will usually keep them selves out of harms way by biting the cheek or ears and put their bodies up against the boars body and keep away from the mouth. My male Kishu Taro has been bitten a few times during training by hogs without cutters so he has figured out that if he gets near the mouth, he will get bit. Koyuki on the other hand is still green and she has been tossed around by a hog so she has learned a little to bay from a distance.
  • My dogs have yet to get injured by boar as well (knock on wood lol).
  • I think our dogs got it down Shigeru, it seems as though all the pups from Momo all turned out to be super hunting dogs.
