Translating a Japanese pedigree

edited April 2012 in General
So I didn't get a JKC export pedigree for my latest import. Not sure how I bunged that one up. I don't really want/need one (my dogs don't get registered with AKC or FCI, so the AKIHO pedigree will suffice). However, I do like having the romaji of all the ancestors' names.

Would someone be so kind as to translate this for me? [Sorry for having photos instead of scanning it. I don't own a scanner, and I had already framed it by the time I realized my mistake.]

  • That's amazing, I probably can have someone look at that for you. I'll show it to them
  • I'm sure someone will have a lot of fun translating that. Pedigrees are hard since kanji can be read in different ways, and there is a lot of leeway in the way names are read. For dog names it gets even trickier as there are often more kanji involved in some crazy combinations. To get the translation correct you will almost always have to make calls to kennels up through the pedigree to get them to tell you how to read the names. Of course some kennels will know the correct names for all the dogs in the pedigree, and some registries (not sure about AKIHO) have the readings for the names on file.

If you want someone to just take a whack at it, that's possible. They'll probably get at least half of the names correct.

I am familiar with these lines, and if I had X possibilities for a particular name I would have a good chance of picking the right one.

The only reason I am not relying on the breeder for this is because he is very slow with email, sometimes not responding at all. I still don't have photos of her parents, which makes me sad. However, I have emailed him asking for a translation of the pedigree, too.
  • Well we could check for common dogs in the database if we knew the registration numbers
  • The reg numbers are on the pedigree. I checked for common dogs a few months ago. Mosura's sire's sire is Taiyouhikari Go, which is Toramaru's dam's sire. But that is the closest relation I can find; nothing on Mosura's dam's side at all matches up.

Oh, but lacking the kennel names I don't feel like the info I have so far is complete enough to enter into the database. :(
  • No take the Akiho numbers on you pedigree. Then search ours and Akitapedigree for matches by number. But FYI AP has numerous errors.
  • Like I said, I searched ours. But I hadn't checked akita pedigree... I'll do that too.

Update! Here is what I have been able to piece together with the help of google, a kanji lookup tool, the AKIHO website, and the various akita pedigree databases.

08-2013 雲翔 is the littermate of 08-2014 Kouun Go. This is the only one which I found but do not have any romaji for. It might be Kumosho?
