Travel Safety - Crate Tag Template

edited July 2012 in Products & DIY
I got the idea from a FB group created after a famous Agility handler and her 6 dogs were involved in a deadly car accident - 2 dogs died, 4 surviving dogs with different injuries and punctured lung for the owner. The group is very active and people start talking about travel safety in cars with your canine friends.

It is basically a cut PVC pipe with end caps that you can attach to your crates in the car. You put your dog's info (basic info, picture, vet info, emergency contact and authorization to provide ER care) in the tube in case of emergency.

You can find the template to put in this tube here,

  • I like the idea very much, the questions that comes to my head is just
A: will they stay on the crate in a car accident? And
B: will the EMS use the information in the tubes?

I use 2 zipties to secure the tube on the crate door. There is no guarantee that they will stay on in a car accident, but you do whatever you can, hoping that the critical information is available in case of emergency. I also have the same information, along with the dog's medical record in a ziplock bag stored in the glove compartment.

The tubes are clearly marked "Open In Case Of Emergency" and I would hope the EMS will use the information should the situation arise. Again, there is no guarantee and having that information available is better than not having it.
  • Nice idea. I have a binder with my cat's info in it that we take with us if he's in the car but this would be easier.
  • That's a really great idea. Thanks for sharing. :o)

  • I really love those crates. I know you posted them before. I think I'm going to have to get Mika and Koda a couple for traveling.
