Gojira has a hotspot under her ear

This happened yesterday while all the dogs were in the house and I heard no fighting or scuffle going on, so I was completely mystified. When Aaron got home from work he held her down so I could look inside her ear with a flashlight; fortunately, all of the inflammation and "liquid" was on the outside, the inner part of her ear was clean and normal. We cleaned it, dabbed some peroxide on it, and gave her some canine aspirin. Her temperature was fine, but she miserably shook her head all night long. We put her in a crate too small to stand up in but she still found a way to shake. Got her to the vet this morning who confirmed that its just a hot spot and gave us meds for her. Its the first she has ever had. Poor Goji! She's a cone head once more...

  • Yikes, that looks bad! She must have just done it to herself if there was no scuffling. But then you'd have to figure out why she did it. Poor pup. Get well soon, Goji!
  • Did the vet shave the area to air it out?

Is the hotspot somewhat related to her tearstain? She's had that tearstain for a while.

We spoke to the ophthalmologist about her tear staining when we had CERF done. She has had it in that eye since I got her. Sometimes its almost gone, sometimes its really bad. The vet felt it was okay and "just the way she is" but I kept pressing so he put some UV-reactive liquid in her eye and waited for a while, then checked her nose with a black light to see how it drained. As he suspected, it doesn't drain as well as it should. There is a (very painful) surgery they could do to enlarge it, but the vet stressed that the only concern right now is aesthetic and he didn't think that was good enough reason to do it. The next week, when we took her in for PennHip and OFA, we had them flush out her tear ducts to see if there would be any improvement, since she was going under anyway. There wasn't any. So... it really is just the way she is...

I doubt the hot spot is related. She's never had one before.
  • Btw there's a product called Angel Eyes which is a water additive that will clear up the tearstains, something about it removing whatever it is in tears that dry to that brown color. First hand I have never heard of any downsides to it and it is vet recommended (for what that's worth).
  • The reddish-brown staining is from tear pigments called porphyrins. I would not say that the use of Angel Eyes is vet recommended. Daily use of an antibiotic without a prescription for a cosmetic problem is not responsible.

  • To be more specific, the vets at my work recommend it and have no reports of side effects. Your mileage may vary.

    How's she doing?
  • Princess Sadface McConeHead (her current nickname...) is doing okay. The spot looks worse now than it did originally due to being shaved and drying out.
  • How is Gojira?
  • My friend uses bottled water for her Maltese mix and it takes away the tear stains beautifully. Saves money on angel eyes.

I'm sorry about Gojira. That hotspot looked violent. Is she getting better?
  • Its healing well. The vet shaved it and it got all crusty and gross looking. We've taken the cone off and the scabby part is very small now. The other dogs have been "helping" by cleaning her ears constantly, lol.
