Anyone else with a Kishu who doesn't like to eat?

Kishin has decided he doesn't like to eat on his normal schedule, or at all sometimes. For a bit we had some girls in heat, so we figured that was why his eating habits had changed. But there are no girls in heat now and he is still not really into eating. Anyone else experience this with their Kishu?

  • I had that problem with Riki. He was super picky and ate at odd times. I just left the food for him there and he ate when he felt like eating. Yuki is in heat right now and taro seems a little off in his eating habits but nothing too abnormal.

Maybe he has a stuffy nose?

Dogs can get their taste-buds get out of wack and, like cats, sometimes want to smell their food before they eat. I had that problem and took Ninja (Akita) to the vet. They prescribed some antibiotics and her illness went away. She began eating and smelling again soon after.
  • Nope, Thank God, Goon is a pig. Literally. [ she even "oinks" & "grunts" like one! ]

She eats everything. & then, Tries to stick her paws in Fate & Wraith's crates to take their food. ~
  • Could it be the change in season ie increasing temperatures? All my pups lose much of their appetite during this time of year, even my piggy Tikaani, unless we have the AC going during meal times.
  • Yea, it could be the hot temps I guess...
  • Really? Weird. Never noticed a change in appetite from temps. ~
  • Well, you don't have much of a season change in Orlando, Osy...
  • Everyone in my house is off their food right now. It's the heat here. Gonna have to get some raw to keep them eating during the heat. The pups can't afford to lose any weight.
  • @brada1878 Brad, what are you talking about! Florida does have season change! Sticky season, Raining season, Bug season, and "It's hell outside" season! ;o)

my Kishu recently decided she won't eat breakfast unless she goes for a walk or plays at the park first and even after that its 50/50 on whether she eats or not, all other meals are ok though.
  • @Hinata23 - LMAO. I must have always visited FL in the "It's hell outside" season...

@onetrackmind - LOL... Sounds like she's trained you well! ;o) I think Kishin is working to train us too...

  • Debby hit us hard the past few days.
  • @brada1878 LOL Ahhh, nothing like feeling you just came out of shower when you step outside!
  • LOL! We have a bit of a change. From 20;s-40's in Winter to 80's - 90's in summer! ;)

Tho Cecilia is right, we have those seasons too lol ~
  • please... you get 20s and 40s maybe one or two weeks out of the year. That's not a season! :oP
  • LoL, I still find it funny that this past winter FL temps were lower than NY temps.
  • Baron loses his appetite every year when it starts to warm up.
  • LOL It was 20's for like, 3 weeks & 40's for another 3 weeks. :)

Last year it was wicked cold all winter tho.

But it dawned on me, if heat does effect appetite, we probably don't see it as I keep my guys in the AC. They're inside 90% of the time during the hot summer months, mainly because...well...THEY Don't want to be outside! lol ~

I just reread the linked thread... Brad didn't want a Kishu at all! Lol

    @ShikokuSpirit -

    "Next Spring -

Brad: 'Guess what? Jen and I are adding a Kishu to the pack!'"
  • There is a lot of that on the forum...
  • While not a Kishu, we go through this all the time with Kaiya. She is extremely picky and as she is fed RAW, we cannot just leave it for her all day. Recently she went with eating only one of 6 meals she was offered. Granted it was VERY hot and we had a slight routine change, but this isnt the first time and I'm sure it wont be the last. In fact, she refused her breakfast yesterday and only ate 3/4 of her dinner. She really is a strange one sometimes.
  • Our Kishu doesn't always eat. When I only fed them kibble she would go a day or two without eating, still same amount of energy and activity as normal, then eat 2 or 3 days worth of food. Even now that I'm feeding them Primal, she won't always eat in the morning. She'll then eat more dry food latter in the week than normal. Her weight has stayed constant and our vet said it was normal for spitz type dogs and his female husky does the same thing.
  • Tomoe reminds me of this standup comedy bit by Marsha Warfield, who played bailiff Roz in the 80s show Night Court. "Skinny people piss me off," she said. "They'll be all like 'sometimes I just forget to eat.' HOW THE F%$# DO YOU DO THAT??"

She only reliably likes the first serving of canned food, then it is not really good enough for her. She'll go a day to a day and a half without eating much, just nibbling. Then she's ms. ravenous.

She's also the least food-motivated dog ever. When i take her to obedience school she knows the drill but when i try to train her around the house its like "oh, I get it....I take that food from you, and I am doing what YOU want me to do. Well I'm not that interested, sorry."
