I need me a collar!!!

edited September 2012 in Products & DIY
Ok, I use to get all my supplies from Bark and Giggle but Pam closed shop so I REALLY need someone else to make me collars and leashes for the pups. Any suggestions? I really want to support members of the forum/community so if you have any recs, please let me know!

  • @Romi makes collars.
  • Email Pam. She still may be making things for the forum people, but you will have to check with her personally.
  • If Pam doesn't anymore, Sirius republic is awesome.
  • Might want to try these people too: http://www.etsy.com/shop/SniffToWag
  • oohh! All these collars are super cute!

I need a new collar too, as Leo ate his this morning. Luckily NOT the very cool Bark and Giggle collar that Brad and Jen sent with him, but another one. I'd taken off his cool one, partially to save it for fancy wear, but also because his fur was getting matted down under it, and I went with a thin rolled collar. I guess it was too loose or something--not sure how he managed to get it in his mouth, but he did and he chewed it off, and yes, I'm afraid ate a bit of it. Oh, Leo.

I guess this is why I've usually used leather collars--they don't chew quite as easily. I guess we'll go to a thin rolled leather collar for everyday like we have on Oskar.

But if anyone knows anyone that does cool thin or rolled leather collars, let me know. We do keep a collar with ID on are dogs at all times, so I'd like something that doesn't mat his hair down. We walk with a harness so something like this (which is only for ID not attaching a leash) would be super cool, but I wonder if he'd just eat this one too? Probably! Silly boy!

    And I'd like leather.....
  • I make collars, but not that I'd sell them. They are very, er, rough, not all fancylike. So I'd feel odd selling one since they look like they were just slapped together. Which they are, but I do make them very strong and out of good materials. If a god destroys or loses one, no big deal, they usually cost less than $2 in materials if I even spent any money on them.

I'd like to learn leatherwork someday. I've always thought it would be a neat hobby to have.
  • " If a god destroys or loses one, no big deal,"
    ;)
That's exceptional service! Most companies say Tough Cookies if the product fails due to an act of god.
    ;)
  • I use gundog supply for collars. They're not as fancy/cute as previous links and mentions, but I like their double ring collar selection, customer service and prices that are easy on my wallet.

  • @shibamistress-- @hondru made me some collars for Bea like the one sold on Amazon. I actually love it because it does not mat the hair down at all!
  • @WrylyBrindle HAHA! Didn't notice that one. I usually catch it when I type god instead of dog. Happens a lot, actually...
  • @ttdinh mind putting up a picture of the collar? The only reason I prefer chain over cloth is for the lack of fur matting
  • Bottega Veneta makes some nice collars. they are just a nice leather collar but other than that, nothing special. you're basically paying for the name.

Ghost is wearing this one right now, and i think id get the large woven one for the next dog (hopefully a kai).

Did you really pay $400 for one of those? For that kind of money I would get something from here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/OLICOLLARS

Edit: I'm not trying to be critical, I'm just surprised that a simple leather collar could be so expensive.
  • $400 bones!!! Holy crap I'm in the wrong line of work. My dogs get simple blaze orange cloth colors from hunting dog supplies for like $15.00 a piece...

jikjak I need to be doing what your doing man.
  • I like the olicollars...I've got that shop favorited. But....I need something thin that won't ruin his fur. :(
  • The olicollars are really nice but pricey. This link is from a thread I started on the other side of the forum.

    Now these are expensive collars.

Yeah, I too would like a thin, simple, rolled leather collar so I can keep ID on my dogs all the time without ruining their fur.

That $400 collar is insane.... I'd much rather get the similarly priced studded leather Akita collar from Adachiya in Japan if I'm going to pay that....

  • woah, those diamond ones are crazy! lambo and bugatti pricing for those things.
those olio collars are pretty nice. i wonder which ones would fit well on a shikoku.

ya i got ghost that collar i linked before Ghost was born when i was in LA last year. i think it just costs that much due to the name brand. that company makes pricey purses and clothing etc.

btw how does the collar ruin a dogs fur? does it cause the fur under the collar to be matted or something?
  • That Akita collar is badass!

It can rub a ring of fur off that is visible when the collar isn't being worn. Not all of it, but enough that there is a difference. I don't like it, so when the dogs are not out and about, they don't wear collars.
  • We use the Ruff Wear Knot-A-Just-Collar. The are thin and great for their tags. The collars hide in their fur so it's nice. We like them. But Pam's collars are super cute :)
  • I wanted the older version of the Ruff Wear collar, but couldn't find one and the newer one has two strands it looks like rather than one.

@jikjak....for some dogs, regular collars will mat down their fur, and in some cases with some dogs, even rub it so it breaks and gets shorter. I can't guess which dogs it will do it with and which it won't--it doesn't happen on my Shibas, who have very nice leather collars with southwest decorations, and it didn't happen on my somewhat longer than normal coated GSD, but it does happen on my Akita and Kai Ken.

@Poeticdragon--I just have a basic rolled leather collar on my Akita and it disappears into his coat and doesn't damage it. It's not fancy and was pretty cheap, but does the job!

I'm way too paranoid to let ours out in the yard without a collar, for any number of reasons--one just what if they got out somehow, but also I do need to grab them sometimes (like last week when Leo got bit by the rattlesnake--had to grab the other dogs so they didn't go after the snake too). So I do leave their collars on all the time.

@shibamistress The old ones (the ones I have) are all over the internet for $12-15 dollars. Both Zappos and Backcountryk9 have it on sale.

I might even buy ChoCho a new one (old ones) since Goro bits hers when they play and he's out growing his.
  • Oh, I like that RuffWear collar a lot....Thanks for the links, @Hinata23.
  • It wasn't the right size--I already checked both those places. He needs large. :(

Collars are invaluable in multi-dog households. Being able to hold the collar while moving one dog in or outside is nice. I'm pretty sure Ghidora is tired of me trying to use my legs to block him from having sexy time with Mosura when we switch dogs from the yard to the house, LOL.

EDIT: I've been browsing around Ruff Wear's site this afternoon. So many things I want.
  • You can order nice leather rolled collars, among other things from https://quillin.com/ and http://www.hoganleather.com/
  • Man these are all really really cool collars. Sad to hear that Bark and Giggle is shutting the doors! What's Pam's name here on the forums? I'm always mixing up people's real name and forum name.
I think I'll try my hand at making collars, both fabric and paracord, once I get a paycheck or two since I'm living on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich budget after moving haha.
  • I so those Hoganleather collars too, but decided not to go for it while Leo is still growing. I just got a cheap rolled leather collar for now. I think, though, I'm going to get him a braided leather ID collar tag (non adjustable, not meant for a leash--the style I like is about midway down the page) from these people: http://www.leashesbylyndale.com/Collars.htm

they are almost like jewelry--you can even get them beaded! I asked how long their turn around time was and got an answer in less than 12 hours, and they said it only takes a week to get things in the mail (sometimes custom people take forever). So I will get one of those at some point.
  • @shibamistress - Those are really cool. However, they will not work with my collar tags, which is an absolute requirement for a collar in my house! (I HATE hearing the jingle jangle of tags!)

I wonder if they could braid a small flat piece of leather along the collar to put the tags on?
