itching?

edited November 2012 in General
Toki has been itching more lately, but not excessively. He has also been grooming a lot more lately too.

I feel like this has happened since I've switched him over to Orijin, but at the same time, it has gotten colder and he has been outside a lot.

I don't see any fleas nor dander, and there isn't any one particular spot he itches or grooms.

So, how much itching and grooming is normal? (toki has never been one to really groom himself often like a cat)

If he has a food allergy, which I'm not sure he does, what would be some specific things to look for?

I don't want it to be a food allergy because Toki is so much more energetic an happy on Orijin.

  • I bet its the cold weather, i had ferrets when i lived in Dallas their scratching increased every winter or after baths.
  • I did notice that on his under belly on his lower stomach there is a section that is sort of raw and feels a little bumpy. There is hair, but it is a little thinned out. Should I be concerned?
  • Is his fur turning brownish? That happens on all my dogs when the lick/chew too much. Look at the white parts on his underside.
  • Ehhhh....not really. It's just thinning out.
  • okay, bumping this.

Toki's itchy part has gotten more itchy. I found a weird little bump? Its not like, super red... maybe a little pink, but it looks irritated. (def. not a nipple, found those, lol!) It is on his lower belly, right before his manly bits.

My guess are ranged from ringworm, UTI, poison ivy, boredom.

I do not think it is a food allergy, i changed his food too long ago for a change to appear. I would say in the last few weeks this has slowly progressed into an itchy issue.

I've been rubbing benadryll gel on his itchy parts and giving him a benedryll pill at night. Any suggestions?? If this doesn't improve, I'm looking to take him into the vet wednesday.
  • For what it's worth, we are just coming out of huge session of exactly what you are describing. For K it's either 1) going into heat 2) The Heat or 3) Shedding time is coming.
  • Well since toki doesn't have girlie parts that leaves only #3 lol. Brace yourself the tumbleweeds are coming. unless it's some 4th option.
  • Well two I ment climate heat

If it's already pink and bump then it's likely to continue into a cycle of "oh it's itchy, imma chew it" "crap I chewed it, now it's raw" "this raw area is so itchy, imma chew it!". Can happen from a lot of different things, best to just take him to the vet before it becomes a hot spot. If it's already noticeably thinned and bumpy then chances are it looks a few degrees worse than what you can see. Nothing to be majorly concerned over, it's probly skin that became damp for too long from the lake water + cold air and ended up irritated.
  • LOL exactly!
  • Could it be ants? Taki had some weird bumps under one if her armpits one time and it turned out to be ant bites 0.o
  • Could have been something like a fabric that irritated him and now he keeps aggravating it more and more. I would see if the vet can do a skin scrape.
  • Exact thing happened to Koda on Orijin. Sounds like an allergy to me.
  • hmmm.... well, i'll switch him to arcana. i was thinking about doing that anyway at some point, so might as well. apparently Orijin had a fire at one of their factories, so the supply is limited. Either that or my store made up some bs to cover their laziness, hehe.

i dont think it could be ants. I've seen Toki get into fire ants before.

fabric? i'll look into it, though we haven't brought anything new into the house nor changed laundry soap, so i'm not really sure which fabric to pinpoint.
