  • @cezieg @Sangmort YES! ChoCho and Goro NEED to let out some energy! We're in Champions Gate. I know Ossy is in Kissimmee. @cezieg where in Orlando are you?
  • @Hinata23 I'm in East Orlando, by Goldenrod and 408, which is only about 10-15mins away from Fleet Peeples Dog Park, pretty awesome to be this close to it. How about you?

@cezieg We're 10 min south of Disney, so about 40 minutes away from Fleet Peeples Dog Park. We were thinking of drive up sometime this upcoming week to take the dogs. Walking them is become a work out since all they want to do is pull and hunt. They are too focus to use the bathroom...
  • What?! Is a Florida meeting actually happening?! Awesome! I just got back from Sea world. .. not as fun as I remembered it :(

I just started to volunteer with In Harmony With Nature, a Wolf hybrid sanctuary, so I'll be in O-Town often... oh, and I have a Sunpass lol.
  • @Zinja Yup! Ren and I got to meet Hinata + hubby, ChoCho, and Goro for a few mins at the dog park today! Only for a few minutes at the gate though since I rode with my sister + brother in law who decided to leave early to get some errands done so the BILaw could rest up (just had shoulder surgery).

We're going to meet up again, probly next week, and hopefully Osy can meet up too. You should join! Once I get in touch with Osy (she seems to be busy with stuff) I'll put up a post for a little meet up :)
  • sure. I'll pm you my info.

So I haven't gotten around to uploading the pictures I finally got of Ren and Keanu playing by the pool. But seeing as how my sister is away for two weeks in Portland (apartment hunting with her fiance) and wanted some pics/video of her puppy... I figured I'd put a video together haha. Ren has been putting on weight gradually, which I'm happy about. So it's nice to not see her ribs while running around in the video, something I only noticed after I was done with it. She's a nice 24 lbs now, only a pound or two to go until she's at what I think is her ideal, where she has a nice padding over her ribs and I have to apply very light pressure to count them rather than them being apparent from just running my fingers along her side. Anyways, hope it gets some smiles :)

I love that she is so smiley in the majority of her pictures! What a cutie!
  • It made me smile and laugh. I am so glad to see little Ren so happy. Her sister would have jumped into that pool without thinking twice.
  • Too cute! How fun to have their own pool, lol ;o) Very pretty dogs!!
  • Thanks @ttddinh @CarabooA ! She's a super smiley girl and always has me smiling by her enthusiasm for... pretty much anything that involves both of us doing anything haha. She's getting more used to her "swimming lessons" while I carry her around in the pool, she still prefers me doing all the work though lol, whenever it's her turn to swim she just beelines for the stairs. Definitely need to figure out a way to hold treats at the same time, maybe cut up hotdogs and put them on something that floats lol.

@sjp051993 I'm glad it did! I've been slacking on the Ren photos and figured you'd enjoy a little update. I think with enough cheese and hot dogs she'll be jumping in soon enough, even if it's just for a quick in and out to cool off.
  • You have done a great job with her. She was always the shy, timid pup of the litter. I knew she needed just the right home to flourish in. She has found that with you.

@sjp051993 Late reply to this oops. Thank you Stacey, she's a really great pup and I'm doing my best for her.

So today I took Ren and Keanu to the dog park in Boca Raton, the weather was just too perfect and they've both been cooped up since the meet up. With how great Ren was in Orlando, doing more exploring, interacting with the other NK, and smelling people on her own I was hoping this time that she'd actually be playful and active.

Well, she definitely was! As soon as we pulled up she was smelling out the window and watching other dogs through the fence. Keanu was excited to go and I think that helped her get excited too, they both were pulling my arm off after stepping inside. So I unleashed Ren first and then Keanu, to my surprise Ren was the first one to take off! She ran about 20 feet and then circled back over to see why Keanu and I weren't up there yet, then Keanu took off and the pair of them went running over to the other dogs to say hello.

There were only 2 other dogs at first, then eventually they left and it was just Keanu and Ren. I was tossing the tennis ball for them to run after, Ren only runs after things while they're moving then loses interested, Keanu will actually retrieve, however once Keanu gets something Ren will want it lol. So almost every throw turned into a tug of war and a game of Steal-From-Keanu. At one point Keanu layed down with the tennis ball and was pulling fuzz from it, Ren circled off to the side, dropped down into a crouch, then sprinted straight at Keanu and tackled him with both her front legs around his neck like a hug, then as soon as he had fallen over she reversed, grabbed, the ball, then took off running hahaha. She's definitely a little ninja!

To top it all off she even played with a dog she'd never met before! Also she was more confident approaching people, normally she has a thing with tall/large men, but this time she was bold enough to sniff so close she had her nose up one guy's shorts leg lol. After about 15mins of alone time, more people came to the park, including a 7 month old brindle puppy of some kind. Keanu started wrestling and running with him, then Ren joined in and was jumping over them, jumping on them, and wrestling with Keanu. It was awesome to see her having so much fun! Then around 4pm a LOT more people showed up and there ended up being about 15 dogs in a rather small section of the park, at that point (2 1/2 hours later) Ren was starting to have enough and be overwhelmed by how many spazzy dogs were charging up to her and it was really easy to unintentionally get crowded in. So she hopped up on a bench and just hung out there for about 10mins, at that point she was tired of playing and didn't want to interact with the other dogs so we packed up and headed home. She's been passed out since 5 mins after stepping in the door lol.

Here's some spam! I have video of her playing with the other dog and running around, I'll put it all together and post it up later :)

On the way back from Orlando, she was pooped:

Updates on her developing brindling (hard to photograph with just an iPhone, but the "blonde" looking hairs are all light red/orange):

    Park pics:
This one just because I really like her silhouette

NOT a duck face, making stupid sounds so they both look at once haha

    Nice ball...

    I'll take it!

Are you sure you're Japanese? YES, I'll prove it, see?

    Too many dogs, getting overwhelmed

Why thank you, I think I look like a black fox myself

    I SWEAR I'm not tired

    I'm just resting my...

    eyes... I swear...
  • So cute. She looks more and more like her mom all the time.
  • Ha ha ha. I was thinking that she looks like her uncle!!
  • i'm happy to see her start to break out of her shell. can't wait to see the video
  • She looks great! She's very "sleek" looking!
  • @CarabooA Thank you! She's definitely built for speed lol, I've seen her zoom around the backyard before but yesterday at the park she really let loose!
@Yandharr Thanks man me too! Video up!

Here's the promised video, not too long but not too short lol. Half the reason I put music over it was because in the last segment I was asked what breed and what made me look them up etc, so it'd have been all him saying how she looks like a fox and me explaining her breed :P

  • Too cute. You can tell she was having a blast.
  • What a great dog park!!! I wish we had a nice one around here that was good to go to! I love how she always checks in with you!!!
  • @CarabooA I know right?! I wish I'd gotten a dog sooner, I never knew how many nice parks there are down here, they're free too! What I like most about this one is that it's somewhat tucked away so unless it's a weekend or after 5 it's pretty uncrowded usually, the large dog enclosure has max 5 dogs during business hours. That's when I try to go so that Ren doesn't get crowded, and less chance of the "Unleash poorly socialized/trained dog and not pay attention" people being around lol.

I really like it too, she makes me very confident in her being able to handle future hikes, on and off leash :)
  • @cezieg - don't beat yourself up about not having one sooner - I always feel like the right dog comes into our lives at the right time!
The dogs I've had in the past (as a single gal) would not have made good family dogs - but the dogs we have now are perfect for our family and lives at this point :o)
  • @CarabooA This is true, good point! If I were to have chosen a dog before now it would definitely not have been an NK, since it's only this year that I've really become away about them. Wouldn't trade my Kai girl for anything :)

So we had an interesting last two months. Really busy with a lot of family and friends coming through for my sisters wedding at the end of last month. At first Ren got overwhelmed quickly when we would go in/out of the house with "strangers" near the front door, especially when my uncle and cousin (who couldn't grasp why they shouldn't approach her straight on while crouched down, talking loudly, with their hands out argh) were out front having a smoke. But I think having to deal with it helped her improve. In the last few days before everyone left she would ninja onto the back of the couch to hang out behind me while I watched tv/movies with the cousins.

This month she's slowly started working her way to exploring the entire house on her own. First it was the top of the stairs while I'm still in my room, then one of the upstairs guest bedrooms too. Today and yesterday she's gone off on her own to explore the entire downstairs area by herself, as well as playing all upstairs and downstairs with my sister's half bengal cat that is staying with us until early next month. Upgrade! She also began her first heat a few days ago, so she's finally a little lady lol.

Negatives for the last month include Ren deciding to her happy hop-up as she usually does mid walk, except doing it as we were sprinting through the darkest corner of the neighborhood that has a broken street light. I didn't see her, being that she's as black as she can get and I was looking straight ahead, and as she hopped up on her back legs to put her front legs on my waist she got carried forward and put her front legs back down in front of me. So I felt her paw under my bare foot and rolled my foot at the last second. All she got was three little raw scrapes: one on her toe pad and two 1 centimeter long scratches in the furry area above the outer toes of her front right paw. She gave a startled yelp, but no limping or signs of tenderness while walking. I didn't know what my foot looked like, but I knew it was bleeding and I had gashed my toe. I immediately gave her some neck scratches and good girls, then we continued the last 100'ish yards home. I ended up having the skin in the inner corner of my left big toe split inwards about a half centimeter and a nice area around it taken off somehow, not fun! But a lot better than any damage to Ren's paw. Very glad I wasn't wearing shoes!

The second thing was also in the same extremely dark corner. I think we'll just avoid stopping there. We went for a nice walk around 10pm. Nice cold weather so it's good to go for night walks. She was sniffing around in a small bush that looks similar to to the top of a palm tree, hard to explain. I took a good look to make sure there was nothing there, since she seemed really interested. Then I saw her pull her head back and start smacking her lips, and I thought "Uh oh...". I kept a close eye on her and after about 30s I saw some thick saliva around her muzzle + a slightly unfocused look in her eyes. So I picked her up and sprinted back home. By the time we got to the back yard she was foaming enough that the foam was falling from her mouth. I hosed her mouth out on and off for a good five minutes while cleaning out her mouth with my fingers, along with scraping her tongue clean with my shirt. After those 5mins she had ceased foaming so we went inside. I kept her leashed to my chair, to make sure she wouldn't hide in her crate, and kept an eye on her. Other than being extremely thirsty, physically she was good to go. Oh and she must have been tripping out. For the next 3 hours she was hyper, running around the room, on and off the bed/crate/me, rolling around like a goof, and being a super licker. I never saw the toad though, it must have been buried IN the bush just hanging out while nestled in the leaves.

Thank you everyone for all the advice and helpful ideas with Ren over the last 4 months with her. You've all been extremely helpful! In particular @sjp051993 @CarabooA @WrylyBrindle @tjbart17 @Hinata23 @hondru and @brada1878 for all of the advice in transitioning her to her new home and shy/anxious/nervous dog advice! I know I'm forgetting some names, if you've ever replied to a thread asking for advice on Ren then thank you!
  • @cezieg Oh gosh! My heart freaking stopped when I read "she was foaming enough that the foam was falling from her mouth"! When stuff like that happens I freeze and freak out! Good job! You acted quickly! I HATE HATE HATE those toads! Even though they say we don't have them in Orlando I'm still paranoid! I'm glad to know she was ok by the end of the night!

Oh man I hate toads. >.< I know Florida has those dangerous ones.

My black cat fig ate a gecko or a green anole forgot which and she had issues with that. I forgot what she ate I was so young forgot.

Luckily vet trip and she was OK.

Saya has picked up a small toad it likes to hang in the burn pile and she goes there to go potty in the area.. Sadly she hasn't learned her lesson she tried pounce on one luckily I saw and called her off it.

She foamed a tiny bit even though she spit the toad out not as much foam as Ren, but still scary.. Luckily I had toilet paper with me and rubbed her tongue.. I washed her mouth.

    I'm glad she is fine.
  • Oh man, so scary! (The toad incident). Ive always been afraid of ncidents like that. My best friend's dog was killed by sniffing in bushes where there was a rattle snake. Im sure it was just a freak incident, but still, that is traumatizing. Im so glad she is okay. She definitely must have been on some sort of hypnotoad high afterwards ;)
  • Thanks for the update, u reacted really quickly with the toad situation. Much better than I would have. Are u still enlisting?
  • Wow, Ren's got some speed in that video, how old is he now?
That sucks about the toad! Reading about this is a good reminder. Its not often I see other animals besides rats, mice and pigeons around Boston. Still, it would be good to be aware of the possibility when I head out for hikes, and doubly so in the spring and winter.

@Hinata23 @jellyfart Yeahhh when she went from thick drippy saliva to foam I was like "OH NO" and went from "just stole a TV" speed to "Usain Bolt" speed, sprinting down the street with her tucked under one arm. It probly looked pretty funny lol. That's one of the things I miss about Orlando, not having to worry about these little d-bag toads :\
The toad may or may not have looked like this
And Ren may or may not have had that same look in her eyes after

@Saya Thank you! I didn't even realize there were poisonous toads out your way too. Are they Bufu toads or a different kind? I was hoping to escape them whenever I move North! I'm glad Saya is OK too!

@ttddinh Agh I knew I was forgetting a name. The New Years Eve drinking had already begun lol, sorry! Thank you for all of your advice too! I'm still enlisting, it's just been a long process due to a minor knee injury that I mentioned. So it's been about 1 1/2 months of first getting proper forms filled correctly for prior service (2007 USMC boot camp where the knee injury happened) and now a month of sending and receiving forms/documents to show that my knee is 100% functional. Good ol' goverment and their love of massive amounts of paperwork. On the up side though, my application has passed from the administrative sections to the medical section. The chief medical examiner down at the Miami processing center is who the latest paperwork went to, for the purpose of OK'ing me to go down and have a medical performed, which would be proceeded by swearing in for enlistment! All this waiting has been torturous lol.

@ashah She's 10 months old today actually, and she's a little rocket! Definitely has the long, lanky runner build. I can't wait to take her to a lure coursing event after she gets better off leash recall and socialization. I also need to find somewhere that does it. I don't think she'd take off running if overwhelmed, her first instinct is to find a bench to jump on or something to hide under. Apparently there are poisonous toads/frogs in Indiana, so there are probly some in Mass. too. They're a pain! Must be some great areas to hike/camp up there though. Bet you can't wait to take your future Kai out :)
