Most of the dogs that got the bonus send have great verbal/directional training to do the distance send. With us, it is really the strategy of leading out laterally far enough to the line that I could push into him to take the first jump in the sequence and still able to run a direct line to show forward motion for him to take the second jump and the tunnel without zipzagging.
I love his speed and enthusiasm here. He ran fast and happily and has lovely running A-Frame. Standard Course Time (SCT) is 35 and his time is 22.65
Fun agility weekend with the two Shibas. Very happy to see Nancy Goodwin and her Shiba Danny there on Friday. Got some good information on training areas we can work on.
Both Shibas tried hard. Koji got a couple Qs in JWW and Standard. Maluko did all her chutes the first time - hooray!
I love Koji's standard run on Sunday. Missed the weave pole entry, but otherwise a very lovely run. Good stopped contacts and happy speedy running A-Frame!
Was writing an article for the Shiba E-News (the quarterly publication for the National Shiba Inu Club of America, NSCA) and went back and looked at how Koji and I did in the past year or so ever since we started competing.
I know we progressed very quickly, but it still amazed me when I listed everything out. 01/2012 Earned Rally Novice (RN) title 03/2012 Earned Rally Advanced (RA) title 03/2012 Earned Rally Excellent (RE) title 04/2012 Earned Coursing Ability (CA) title 07/2012 Earned Novice Agility (NA) title 07/2012 Earned Novice Agility Jumper (NAJ) title 08/2012 Earned Coursing Ability Advanced (CAA) title 08/2012 Earned Open Agility (OA) title 08/2012 Earned Open Agility Jumper (OAJ) title 09/2012 Earned Novice Agility FAST (NF) title 09/2012 Earned Agility Excellent (AX) title 09/2012 Earned Excellent Agility Jumper (AXJ) title 12/2012 Earned Open Agility FAST (OF) title 01/2013 Earned Master Agility Excellent: (MX) title 01/2013 Earned Master Excellent Jumpers With Weaves (MXJ) title 01/2013 Earned Rally Advanced Excellent (RAE) title
He had a wonderful time this past weekend, earning his #6 Double Qs on Saturday at the Evergreen Afghan Hound Trial at Argus (Auburn, WA) and then finished his Rally Advanced Excellent (RAE) title at the Puyallup show on Monday.
It's been a while since I last updated this thread. Both kids did great and had a ton of fun in everything we do.
Koji earning the Rally Advanced Excellent (RAE) title at the same show he started trialing a year ago.
Koji also got his Nosework Level 1 (NW1) title, becoming the 6th Shiba with the NW1 title (Maluko was the 4th Shiba that earned an NW1). He had a ton of fun and was a joy to work with.
Koji at the Nosework Level 1 trial, doing vehicle search.
We also got to try Barn Hunt last weekend in Oregon, where the dog has to search for a tube with live rat among hay bales within time. Koji loves hunting for rats and is very good at it. He won the fastest Novice dog ribbon across all three sizes (small, medium and large) - talking about Shiba kicking ass, showing the terriers what a Shiba can do.
Koji was very focused in the start box, waiting to be released for the rat hunt!
Maluko could give a rat's ass about a live rat in a tube, so she just chilled with me while I waited for Koji's turn.
On our way home, Koji in the crate with the ribbons he earned at the Barn Hunt fun test.
A short video clip I made for a video contest to encourage positive training.
I think Saya would do well with barn hunt as she is pretty accurate with finding mice nests in areas. She found a nest by the shed under the ramp, in the garden and wood piles for fire wood.
I might have to check it out maybe there is one near me.
Since our last update, Koji continues doing well in Agility. He earned his Excellent FAST (XF) title, his MXB (Master Excellent Bronze) and MJB (Master Excellent Jumper Bronze) titles (both requires 25 qualifying scores of 100 in the Master level).
He also is making good progress toward getting his MACH (Master Agility Champion), which requires 20 Double Qs (qualification in both the Master Standard class and Master Jumper with Weaves class on the same day) + 750 MACH points (each second under the Standard Course Time will get you MACH points).
Koji has 16 Double Qs now and 500+ pts. I expect we get the double Qs needed before we get enough points. He is also currently ranked as the #2 Agility Shiba for the 2013 AKC Agility Invitational. Not too shabby for a newbie team who only competed in AKC Agility for about 10 months.
Are you in the Portland area? If you are, we are going to be in your area this Sunday for Nosework Level 2 trial with Koji. Would be cool to meet you if you have time.
I can't beLIEVE there's a shiba *above* Koji!!! No way! Banjo Boy is the best! Can't be very much above him, however they rank these things...
I really like that top broad jump photo!
Ha, the #1 Agility Shiba is a really cool black and tan, Kado. They are very consistent and have been competing for about 3 years vs. us with 10 months. I am confident Koji and I will give them a good run for their money (entry fees). They are from the Portland area and I saw them last weekend at a trial down in OR. They will also be at the Agility trial in my area this weekend, so I will see them there too. The Pacific Northwest has the #1 and #2 Agility Shiba in the country!
Koji rocked the Barn Hunt trial over the weekend, coming home with 2 new titles, RATI (Rat Instincts Test) and RATN (Novice Barn Hunt), 4 1st placements, 1 3rd placement and 1 high in trial.
He has the fastest time across all height classes in Instinct Test with a time of just 6.28 seconds and High in Trial in the Novice class with only 16.53 seconds. Koji is not flashy when he searches, but he is focused, on task and very methodical. Way to go, Shiba Koji!
This is Koji's High In Trial Barn Hunt Novice run at Castle Rock, WA on June 1, 2013. He located the live rat tube (at Novice level, there are 3 tubes - 1 with live rat, 1 with just bedding and 1 empty) within seconds after being released from the start box. I trusted his nose and called the find right away.
I then directed him to complete the required "climb" and "tunnel" to qualify. His time was a little bit over 16 seconds and the maximum time allowed for the Novice class is 2 minutes. He has the fastest time among all dogs and earned High in Trial with this run.
Koji (MACH San Jo Kumi Rock N Roll Banjo Boy RAE, CAA, T2B, MXB, MJB, XF, NW1, RATI, RATN) got his Master Agility Champion (MACH) title at the Evergreen Golden Retriever Club trial on Saturday, June 15, in Monroe, WA. To date, there are only 8 Shibas with a MACH title.
I accidentally got hurt in the first run of the day running a friend's dog. The dog crashed into me in Excellent FAST run because of poor handling choice on my part and knocked me down to the ground, resulting in a swollen ankle. I ran Koji in Master FAST 6 dogs after the incident, limping and was able to get a Q and 1st place. I was hopping on one leg at the end of the run and knew that there was no way I could have run Koji in the remaining 2 runs (Master Standard and Master Jumper with Weaves) that day. I asked a fellow Agility classmate to run Koji for me in Master Standard and they ran nicely together, earning enough points to get his Agility Champion title.
It has been an amazing journey to go from Novice A (Koji is my first Agility dog) to MACH in just under a year's time. I believe he is also the youngest Shiba that earned his Master Agility Champion (MACH) title in the US (Koji just turned 3 years old in March), probably also the fastest in time (less than a year's time) too!
Koji earning High in Trial in the Non-Sporting Group at an all-breed agility trail a week ago.
Koji came to me at 9 month old because the older Shiba in his previous home would not tolerate him. As a new dog owner (never had a dog in my life until August 2010), I learned with my 2 Shibas and it has proven to be a wonderful journey together.
