Which dog breed is the best companion to a Shiba?

edited August 2012 in Shiba Inu (柴犬)
Hi

I have been wondering lately about which dog breed will make out a good companion to a Shiba. I've seen mine getting along best with Chows, Border Collies, Golden retrievers and the odd Husky.

What are your experience regarding this?

  • I think it varies widely depending on the individual Shiba and dogs.

My Shiba gets along with polite dogs of all sizes and breeds, except Setters. For some reason he hates Setters. I have noticed that he tends to like medium sized or dogs smaller than he, but for the most part it depends on that dog's personality and how "rude" they are when meeting him.
When I moved back in with Mom, he was fighting constantly with one of her dogs, Juneau, who is a Border Collie Labrador Retriever mix. Now the two of them get along fine. He generally just needs time to adjust to the dog. He's only met a couple that he couldn't stand, and those were usually dogs who tried to fight right off the bat or got up in his face. No particular breed, except for Setters.
  • I know a lot of Akita owners with Shibas. Though, I've only ever met one Shiba once in my life, and he didn't seem to interested in playing with other dogs, including my JA.
But I do now that Akitas and Shibas have been known to get along. To be honest, I think it is situational, varying from dog to dog, but that is just my opinion.

Sukoshi liked to play with Corgis at the dog park.

We have had some Shiba meetups at the same time as the Westies and the two breeds seem to get along well.

Another option would be a Jindo. (Korean spitz type dog)

Compatibility varies ......it's not so much about breed per se as compatibility of energy and play style. In addition to proper integration strategies.

My Shibas have gotten along with some corgis and not others as well as Spaniels, JA's, a few Jindos, a German Shepherd and Dobermans. Notices the herding breeds (Aussie, Border Collies) can be a bit much sometimes and well as Terriers who can't seem to keep the edge off. That's our experience over time with many Shibas.

  • Well, what's your dog like?
  • Other Shibas!

Second what SnF says. It depends on the dog and their tolerance level and reactivity. I would not pair a more reactive Shiba with most terriers or herding dogs, or a very serious grumpy Shiba with anything boisterous or "in your face".
  • Yeah, depends on the dog. One of my Shibas would answer that like this: NO dogs are good matches for Shibas, including other Shibas! The other gets along with most dogs, but lives with a Kai Ken and an AA, and with a GSD before that. the only one of my NKs who tolerates terriers is the Kai Ken. When my male DID tolerate other dogs, he preferred large breeds, and my female is like that too.

Actually, I would say that Kai Ken might make a good match, because they seem more able to get along with other dogs than some of the other NKs and can probably work around some Shiba snark.
  • Definitely depends on the dog. Right now, my dog does best with other rude, exuberant dogs because they don't mind that he's that way. He's one of those dogs that makes dogs like Conker cringe---he's immediately in their face, licking. Now, the type of dog he meshes with may change later since he's only 8 months old but he's definitely the opposite of a lot of Shibas, I think, in terms of what he meshes well with, right now.
  • My Shiba's on the grumpy side. He hates Huskies, Malamutes, Boxers, waddly brachycephalic breeds, galumphing breeds with long legs, and most spitzen that are larger than him. He seemed to rather dislike Westies after a few bad encounters, but got along splendidly with a Welsh Terrier whom we dogsat off and on over the years. I think it would be pretty intense keeping both a Shiba and a terrier in the home, though. Teacup dogs with quick, darting movements excite him far too much for my comfort. He's okay with low-key mastiffs, greyhounds, loping Great Danes or other giant breeds that are large enough for him to walk under. And he's also good with Corgis, pit bull puppies up to about 6 months, and any other dog that has learned to respect his space.

Sound arbitrary enough? Because it sort of is. ;) Ultimately, no matter what "trend" you see in answers here, your own preferences (and your Shiba's, of course) are going to guide your match. I really like the look and temperament of Basenjis -- and they remind me, on paper, of short-furred Shibas. But honestly, it could have been a disaster throwing together two breeds with a "difficult" reputation if their individual personalities weren't so compatible, with one willing to yield to the other.

In the end, I picked the Basenji as a companion breed to the Shiba because *I* like them. It was just fortunate for us all that Bowdu doesn't seem to dislike them, but it took a long time to stumble across one with a compatible temperament.
  • Great post, M.C. !

We also had to find the right dogs. While I do think Kai Ken are often non confrontational enough with other dogs to make a good companion, it would still depend on the Shiba. As for the others, we had to search a lot to find the right dog (and we also got puppies, because I knew we'd have a better chance integrating a puppy). Still, I had to search for an Akita that would likely be ok temperamentally (and at least that is ok with Oskar--he has other issues, but he's pretty mellow with the dogs he lives with).
  • My shiba hates all dogs that whine, yap or bark too much. Big or small.
  • My Shiba's best friend since he was a puppy is a Basenji named Amber. They play together once a week on Sundays. They're a riot together.
  • We have a 3 1/2 yr old shiba and recently got a Kai Ken puppy. My sister and brother-in-law also have a Siberian Husky. That being said- our Shiba gets along great with both breeds. The Shiba is a female and the Kai and Husky are both males- that may have something to do with it as well. Best of luck with finding a new dog!!!
  • Saya isn't fond of huskies one husky at the dog park resource guards the dog park's tennis balls and got snarky with Saya when she was walking by she didn't even want the ball. luckily she just growled and snarled and Saya ran away.

People think it's so cute this husky has like 6 tennis balls laying with her, but that's not funny to me when she gets snarky with dogs for walking by..

Saya doesn't like boxers only ones she liked are Bella our boxer, Mollie one boxer at the dog park who loved playing with Saya she never played with other dogs except for Saya, and the two boxers in our neighborhood. Rest she avoids or tells to back off if they bother her.

She doesn't like great danes or too many giant dogs..

She tends to get along with dogs her size or other shiba even then she might get bit snarky.

She takes while to get used to new dogs.
  • This is interesting to me since we may be getting another Shiba soon. My current boy is six months old and seems to like every dog he has encountered. It is more or less the other dogs not liking my boy's aggressive excitment. The Shitzu next door is not fond of Kaji because Kaji wants to play and gets so excited to see him. My mom's dog is an English Pointer, but she's paralized and doesn't hear too well. Kaji loves to see her and sleep with her in her giant bed. He'll wait for Millie (the EP) to finish eating and then lick her bowl. There is a husky we encounter on walks with Millie that is really sweet and Kaji seems to like her too. We also have a lot of big dogs walk in our street... Kaji loves them too. He gets super excited when a neighbor brings his Collie over to say, 'Hi.'
  • I'd wait til your young dog is older. Shibas change A LOT when they mature around 2 years old, and often get much tolerant of other dogs. You won't really know til your dog is an adult how he will do with other dogs, though if he likes dogs now, there's more of a liklihood that you'll have a good shot at integrating another dog into your household.

Of course, come to think of it, perhaps that's a good reason to get another dog now while he still likes other dogs! *lol* But my main point is you're likely to see much less tolerance of other dogs as he ages.
  • Another friend told me the same thing- that her dog became less tolerant of other dogs as he got older. I would really prefer to wait but a Shiba is being offered to me since the current owner can not take care of him and is keeping him outdoors with other larger hunting dogs. The Shiba is being bullied at times from the alpha dog so he really needs to be rehomed. I'm considering the shiba for my mom once her dog is put down (she's been to the ER twice the last three weeks, and the vet has recommended it but mom is not ready yet). All the stars have to line up in order for the other dog to become one of ours, mostly, we have to make sure he gets along with our cats and Kaji. If he can't then there is no way I could keep him. I will make a new post on suggestions. Thanks!
  • I hope things work out. Sad being outside like that. :\

Saya loves being outside too we spend at least one to two hours outside maybe bit more or less.. She loves her inside the house time nothing like laying on the top of the couch.

  • @ Saya, we picked up the young boy today and he adjusted well. He's very sweet and although he barked at us when we got there (he was with several other dogs in the yard who were all barking), he hasn't said anything since we picked him up. After a good bath, he's beautiful but a bit too skinny ( can see his ribs through his winter coat). He ignores our two cats and and Kaji keeps wanting him to play, but he's not too interested at the moment. I'm sure once he settles down, his personality will kick in and we'll see what he's really like. So far, other than his condition, everything is much better than I expected.

Saya is so pretty! Sounds like she's living the good life! ;)
  • Oh, congrats! I hope things will be better for him soon! I hope they get along well, kudos to ur pup for initiating play!
  • A dog that is tough enough to tolerate being shiba punched, but mellow enough not to retaliate aggressively.
  • Mine loves our cat! She is pretty fond of the Kai, but she tries to groom the cat like he's her puppy. She also licks our Kai in the mouth (cleaning her teeth I guess?) And grooms all of us as well. Anyone outside the family? Nope. And she hates labs.

Mine was rehomed to me from her second owners. I just had to go with the flow from day one. We did umbilical training for about 4 months to build up her trust with me, and she will never be housebroken due to some strange litter training by her first owner and being locked in a kennel all day and night by the second owners. She is paper trained, though and adjusted quite well to my chi and the cat in record time (I still think she likes them better than she likes me). I wouldn't trade her for the world! Best of luck with your new fuzzy baby!
  • I also have a male Shiba and am looking into integrating a second dog into the home when the puppy is older. I just need to wait to make sure my Shiba and I have bonded more and there aren't any issues that would prevent it. Since its a male Shiba I'm hoping to get a female Kai in the future (especially after visiting Brads Kais! It was an awesome experience). I'm glad to hear they mesh well. In your experiences with multiple dog homes, do genders matter if they're fixed? I know I've read male/female is most successful, followed by male/male, with 2 females fighting the most. Is this still an issue with a spay/neuter?
  • Usually the chance of problems decrease when the animals are spayed/neutered.
  • I think that's generally true (less problems with spayed/neutered dogs) though my altered Shibas (male/female pair) still tried to kill each other, and my girl shiba would still kill him if she could get to him. so as usual, it depends more on the individual dogs than anything else. i don't think most are as crazy as mine.

my neutered males do well with one another, btw. My neutered Akita was a bit edgy with my Kai when he was intact, but now he's better. And my Kai gets along with everyone, including my neutered male Shiba who hates all dogs. (well, I wouldn't say they hang out or anything, but we're working on getting them together more).

I do think Kai Ken are the most likely dogs (of the NKs) to be easily integrated into a household of other NKs, even snarky Shibas. (Yours may not be snarky. Ours are!)
  • Schipperke!
  • All of my dogs are spayed females. We had turf wars with my Shiba when we brought the Kai home, but they get along famously now! My other dog is a chihuahua and she pleasantly ignores everyone except me :)

Mya is a weird Shiba though, she is super friendly and loves everyone. Well, except for my friend's pit bull... Mya started a fight with her and we had to break it up before Mya became a snack!

My Basenji boy is very easy going most of the time but loves to play chase. He met a bl/t shiba that just decided he hated him. My poor guy got bitten pretty hard on the face above his eye. And as a note my boy was being pretty respectful. :/ If that had been his mom (we dont take her to parks for a reason) hed be dead! What im trying to get at is...take this on an individual dog basis...while a breed might sound ideal, like people they are different from individual to individual. Also make sure to meet the parents and if you can grandparents. You can get a good idea of temperament that way. **for whatever breed you choose**
