A lot of the ones that I have met have been mellow / low key. But how do they fair long hikes/backpacking (15+ miles) Or running (5k / 10k) Provided they are fully grown and risk no possible injuries, of course.
During the Week: 8:00am - 15 min walk for pee pee/poo poo 12:00 pm - 1 hour walk with dog walker (play time with other dogs too) around the neighbourhood 4-5pm - quick walk or game of throw/retrieve 7-8pm: 1-1.5 hour through off leash woods. Saigo LOVES this, he runs like a crazy dog through the woods, chasing/being chased by other dogs. 10pm: 15 min walk for pee pee/poo poo
During the weekends, depending on weather, we'll take him to a festival or park in another area of the city. We'll be out for 2-3 hours but it'll be light walking.
I have an 8 month old male JA. He is not a long coat but for sometime there was question as to whether or not he was. That being said, he has an extremely thick, long, plush, luxurious coat. Because of his coat, he gets hot pretty easy. In warmer, humid temps he can withstand about a 20 minute brisk walk. He goes once in the morning and once in the evening. By the time he gets home he is panting and goes straight for water. He will them lay down somewhere cool and relax for a good half hour. If we jog or run with him after about 15 minutes he just stops and lays down. He will lay until he feels cooled off and then will get up but only walk the rest of the way home. At first we thought he was just lazy but are now realizing its hard for him to tolerate the summer temps and high humidity with his three coats of fur.
In between walks he runs around the house with our other dog and will race around the backyard when let out for potty breaks but those are usually 10 minute sprints.
In cooler temps he can extend his 20 minute walks to about double (40 minutes) and the jogs/runs to about double as well (30 minutes).
I honestly couldn't tell you the distance, we measure everthing in minutes around here LOL! But if I had to guess the shorter walks are a little over a mile and the longer walks close to two and the jogs are about two miles for the shorter ones and almost four for the longer ones (which is about a 5K).
For a puppy, he does not have half the stamina my shiba had as a puppy. In fact, she is four years old and can last longer than him but she is also one-third his weight. It is kind of like comparing Animal from the Muppets to Mr. Snuffleupagus from Sesame Street. She is also very agile and has no problem jumping up onto things like the couch or a bed. Our gentle giant on the other hand just puts his big paws up on things and has to idea how to boost his back end up. Which is fine because as much as we love him, he would takeup three-quarters of the couch or bed so he is better off on the floor. Plus, it is cooler on the floor for him. Considering he is clueless how to use his back legs to spring up, I don't know how well he would do hiking especially in rockier terrains.
Every dog is different of course, some dogs have thinner coats and are more agile and have more stamina. I guess you have to assess your dog's capabilities and use your discretion as to whether or not they can handle a long distance run or hike. Like I said, my JA will just poop out after a certain amount of time so I know he wouldn't be good for long distance training, running or hiking. My shiba, she's an olympic athlete and ready for the gold.
I have the sister of @ThreeFish231118's dog. She is also 8 months of course. She is agile and loves to run and cavort. She is also a climber; constantly on the couch or better yet on top of me or on the back of the couch looming over me. We joke she is part mountain goat. We started her on a treadmill for exercise when she was little and she loves it.
I have another female who just turned 2 today that is not as much of a climber, in fact it took a while to convince her that she could go up stairs as easily as she goes down them. However, she is FAST. Crazy fast. She runs around and does donuts and figure eights in the yard. She never seems to tire and thinks running is the best thing ever. She can turn on a dime at full speed and leap great heights or distances.
My third female is almost 6 years old. She really likes to exercise and have a good fast-paced walk either with someone or on the treadmill. She isn't fast but she is very steady and has long endurance. She doesn't jump or climb and acts as though these behaviors are beneath her. She can go all night at a quick trot though.
I have another female (American Akita) that is also almost 6 years old. She is the most conservative when it comes to energy. Like the other older female she can walk at a fast pace for extended periods of time. She rarely runs or chases the other dogs, even when they play together she sets the speed and they follow her lead. She does enjoy doing a few donuts around the yard with enough encouragement and stamping of feet, however. She jumps when necessary and particularly enjoys standing on boxes and benches -- anything high up and level.
My male is 2.5 years old and he is our little Eeyore. When he doesn't want to do something he hangs his head and drags his feet and throws his whole weight into being an anchor. He has zero problem keeping up with the girls without ever seeming to tire, but doesn't enjoy any forced exercise or fast paced walks. He can but refuses to jump into the car when we're going somewhere and makes us lift him. He's not much of a jumper or climber. Like all the dogs he'll get up on the chairs to look out in the front yard, however.
The one trait my dogs have in common is that they are tireless. I don't think I've ever truly worn out any of them, even when I was too pooped to continue on. They may get bored or decide they'd rather be doing something else, but never actually exhausted. After a good drink (Akitas are such thirsty dogs!) and ambling about the house for ten minutes they're ready to do it all over again.
I have had a dog overheat from exercising too much, however. She does not have an exceptionally thick coat like Melissa's dog. We pushed her too far and didn't offer enough water breaks. She never gave signs of being tired or refusing to move, in fact she continued to stride forward the entire walk. However, when we got back home, she went and laid down in our koi pond, panting, and wouldn't come out.
@ThreeFish231118, You're the one in Chicagoland right? I live in NorCal but am working out of Lake County for part of July and August. It is humid here!!!!
I have a true long coat JA, runt too, and she's similar to how you described in warm weather, while the 12-yr-old shiba is like the energizer bunny.
@rikumom, Yes! I am in the Chicagoland area. I live in the western suburbs and work downtown. It really is humid here right now. It is disgusting. Just last night on our walk Kyuubi laid down for almost 10 minutes and wouldn't move. I almost had to call my husband and have him pack up our 3 year old son and come pick us up with the car. There never is any consistency with our weather. It can be nasty humid one week and then cold and dry the next. Forget weeks, our weather can change in a matter of a day, sometimes hours.
@ThreeFish231118, Poor Kyuubi, sounds like Meichan-- she'll trot along in the sun until she gets in the shade, then locks up and refuses to move. It's as if she's solar powered.
The fur kids are back in California with my hubby. I'm out here a few days a week so doesn't make sense to fly them :-)
i do half mile walk with both dogs(which is my maximum distance. and 2-3 mile scooter. I'm lazy asian and need to smoke a cig every half mile. http://www.amazon.com/Currie-Technologies--Zip-Electric-Scooter/dp/B004HL01S4/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1373476985&sr=8-4&keywords=currie+scooter this is scooter I have and it works pretty good. perfect speed for dogs. easy to control. I tried Bicycle/running etc but I like this most. low and thick tires, easier for me to control the balance when my dog goes for other dogs. I have been riding it for months and never fall. best part is fun to ride as well.

Normally, all I get out of him is about a mile before he is bored or distracted.
Sorry, it is too hot in the summer for excersize. We may take 30-60 minute walks in the early morning. Like. 7:30am.
When it is 80 degrees at 7am, you know youre going to have a bad day. So. No. Not running in the heat, and no I'm not getting up at 5am, haha.
Bottom line, i know Toki would never go anything longer than 3 or 4 miles, and that is conditional.
