edited September 2013 in Akita (秋田犬)
hi I have to ask , I recently read in one of the articles that when a pup burn as longer coats then short coat but not long that is a mistake change their coats to shorter one. does it happen to one of you or hear about it ?
another question , hair in the ears I must say that the longest hair is on the had and the ears are 1 inch hair long , she has like a medium because the long coated brothers of her are much more bigger and has a much more fur , but she has longer coat then her short brothers

  • By looking at your posted images of your cute AA pup, she is definitely NOT a long coat as others have also stated on this forum. My AA male had the same long ear hairs (1 inch) as a pup and he is a short coat. Even though her coat is longer than her short coated brothers, she is still not a long coat.
  • my question is how can you defined a long coat or not , any way thx could you upload picture your aa as a pup?
  • Sorry, I don't have a pict of my AA as a pup that shows the ear hairs enough so you see the length. Another difference between the coats is that the long coat feel like the coats of Rough Collies or a Sheltie instead of the AA short coat. Believe me, you do not have a long coat. Are you going to show her, is that why you are concerned?
  • i'm going to a show in october 5 but even if she be a long coat i will still love her i just want to know. thx for your help any way

  • Good luck in October!
  • thx by the way do you see the picture ?
  • No I do not see your picts in this post. I think there is a problem with how you added the links. But your original post has the images correctly...that is how I know your pup is very cute!

Please stop asking about your puppy's coat length if you don't want to hear the answer. Multiple people have already answered you, yet you are not convinced by anything anyone says -- including a judge, if I remember right! I suggest you do a DNA test for coat length since you aren't going to listen to anyone. Then you'll have an answer once and for all.

  • all I want to know Is how you can know the deference, I get it and I am sure you have much more knowledge then me.
as I said before I just want to know more about the breed that's all .

You should ask the breeder. You should have had informed them that you want a short coat (or long, whichever) puppy and they would deliver. I do hope you got your puppy from a reputable breeder you can ask these kind of questions to since you seem to be redunently asking us over and over again.

You know the difference by looking at the coat. Its very simple. Long coat: significantly much longer fur. Probably much more soft as well. Look at the littermates to compare.

(Hint, you have a short coated puppy)

  • you can find out by looking at it. so obvious to tell long coat and regular.
you can tell when they are even pup.

A long coat is longer, silky, wavy, and tends to form tapered clumps. A normal coat is shorter, rough, strait, and squared off at the edges with no clumps.
  • Oh that's just a puppy coat! It will change as she gets older and gets some guard hairs. She's definitely cute!! And definitely a short coat Akita.

Congratulations! I hope your show goes well.

I agree, this just looks like a standard coated pup.

I always notice the "trimming" when they're puppies. Long haired dogs, as puppies, don't cut as "clean" of an appearance, imo. They're more "clumpy" and marshmallow-like.

My Malamute had a couple long haired siblings and you could tell the difference between them and the standard fuzzy puppy coats because they were much denser as puppies.

http://nicholescritters.homestead.com/malcolorgeneticsCoatLength.html This is an example for Malamutes. I know the coat texture is a little different, but I think the general how-to on differentiating standards from long coat may still apply.
  • puppy coats tend to be longer and fuzzier, that is what your pup has. She is short coated.
  • Yea what you're seeing is the puppy coat which will be replaced by guard hairs and the adult coat in a few months.

A long coated puppy with puppy coat will still jave a much more significantly fuzzier and longer length than a short coated puppy coat. Your dog is still a short coat.
