Akita Puppy Smell

edited December 2013 in General
Hi Guys,

I hope no to offend anyone, but i Had a serious question. My puppy is doing really well and we are really enjoying spending time with him. The only issue we are having...is his smell. We have bathed him a couple of times, but that does not really remove the smell. I was not sure if it is the result of teething and bad breath (since he licks himself. We are feeding him origen puppy food (grain free) so there should be no yeast issue right?

I think i read initially the breed does not smell...was I mistaken? I really appreciate any help. Also are there really good shampoos to use on him.

  • Your pup is an import?

The imported pups that I met had a funky foreign smell for the first couple of weeks. Baths didn't help, only time.
  • Can you describe the smell and where it's coming from?
My JA was imported at 3 months, there was no smell either.
  • Is the smell kind of like a combo of sesame oil and fish?
  • Also, how are you drying him after his bath? My AA got a really bad funky smell because I was not drying him completely after his bath...just using towels. He got a skin yeast infection in the areas with the thickest fur...haunches, chest and tail. After I got a forced air dryer and a fungal shampoo, he no longer smells. That stink was like a sour rotten rag left on the kitchen counter mildewy stink.
  • Not sure sorry. Saya my shiba had bit of a smell in her mouth during teething, but it got better once she was done. She doesn't stink unless she gets into something.
  • What does it smell like, and where is it coming from? Teething smells like death, and expressions smell like rotten fish. If it's yeasty, there could be an infection. Also possible that he has an intolerance to the food ingredients. In any case, if it's bad enough to alarm you, you might want to go to the vet.
  • None of my dogs have had any smell (even the import) except dust when they've been romping in the yard. Even that doesn't linger. They're much less stinky than, say, a Labrador. My friends' dogs always smell "doggy" to me.
  • So mostly its from his breath, but when I pet him i also get some of the smell on my hands and its not the best. I guess it could be from not properly drying him, but his last bath was about 2 weeks ago.

The breath does smell fishy and his back of head, and chest and stomach areas smell the worst. Thats the area I touch him and my hand smells. The vet never commented on his smell. I have a finnish spitz and i expected the akita to smell just like him ( minimal dog smell.) I don't know if its teething and he is licking and getting it all over him or if there is something on his fur. He mostly stays inside and its snowy here so he has not gotten into anything.
  • There is no foreign smell. His breath smells horrible. After a bath he smells ok, but not for long.
  • Kiyoshi is teething right now but he doesn't seem to smell bad at all. When I first got him he smelled like poop for the first week even after I bathed him multiple times. I assume it was from being in his poopy crate for 12 hours lol I'd bathe him and he'd smell good for a bit and then the smell would come back. After about a week though it seemed to disappear and his natural scent is quite nice. This may seem very weird but I LOVE the way the top of his head smells. I haven't given him a bath in a while but he still smells good :) My friends like to joke about how I must febreeze him cause he always smells nice.

I had a golden that got bad skin infections if her fur got too moist and didn't dry out well enough. That was the worst thing I've ever smelled..if it was raining or snowing when she went out to potty we always had to make sure she was thoroughly dry when she came back in.

It could be a lot of different things. :/ I'd ask your vet next time you go in.
  • Orijen has a good percentage of fish in its food. That with the teething blood can cause very stinky breathe. My sister's 6 month old JA had very stinky breath...combo of sesame seed oil and fish. Now that she is has finished teething, her breath is mildly fishy. Her kibble has a high fish content.

To rule out any skin infection due to moisture, I'd get your pup groomed by a professional. That way he will get dried properly and you can ask them to pay special attention to skin condition. Before I got the dryer and fungal shampoo, Bear would start stinking within hours after a bath especially during the humid summer months. That stink would not only stay but just get continually worse not matter how many times I bathed him. My sister says that calling the stink a mildewy smell was being too nice. She says he smelled like "ass". When a dog has a fungal skin infection, the smell doesn't go away after being dry, the fungus is still there.
  • Thank You Bear mom. I definitely think its the food and the teething. And the food is fish flavored. Is there anything to do about the bad breath. I got a liquid your supposed to put in water to help, but it does nothing haha.

I really appreciate all of your help guys. I will def. check at the vet if there is any skin issue.

Also puppy is 5 months old now and about 39 pounds. I really hope he gets to be about 70+ pounds. I can't imagine him gaining 30 pounds though. I will upload some more pictures soon.

  • Orijen is stinky and my dog's breath, poop, and farts are really noxious on it. We fed it for one week while in Texas just recently. I'm glad to be back home and back on Canidae which isn't as gross.
  • Yeah, I was thinking it might just be that the food--however good--doesn't agree with him well. I used to think the dogs that had that doggy smell were just fed poor quality food, but then I started encountered dogs that were given good food, who still had it, and I think perhaps it is just that the food doesn't agree with them. My dogs are raw fed, so they all smell good, except I tend to start the puppies on kibble, and I noticed my akita puppy smelled bad on the first kibble I fed her (don't recall what it was called at the moment, but it was a decent food). She actually smelled just like the dog food! Then we switched, and she now smells just like a good smelling puppy, as she should!

If you don't see anything really wrong (teeth problems, skin problems, etc), it still might pay to try a different a food! A bad smelling dog is not normal!

  • At around 6 months, my Shiba puppy's breath smelled like something crawled into her mouth, died and decayed. It's very likely a common teething symptom if your puppy is 5-7 months old.
  • I will be going to the pet sotre today and get a new puppy food. One without FISH! ;)

  • Any recommendations...I was thinking about using the merrick line ( i sure it for the other dog)
  • I have a personal preference for Taste of the Wild, Acana, Fromm, and Wellness. The first three can only be found in specialty pet supply stores, the last can be found at PetSmart/Petco.
  • I am switching him to Acana (no fish)...since it will be the least amount of change from Origen ( same family but much less protein 31% not 38%.)

I also feed him about 3.75 cups a day is that enough (5 months). 1.5 in the morning, 1.5 in the afternoon and .75 at 5 PM.
  • That amount seems right. His appetite will change as he grows older. My sister's JA pup now only eats twice a day. She also eats Acana.
  • My JA had some bad smell the first few weeks after we picked her up. Nothing could get rid of it and we couldn't find where it came from. We finally found out it came from her ears, the only spots I didn't check. We cleaned her ears (with puppy wipes or tissue paper? I can't remember now) and the smell was gone and never came back.
  • make sure that he is not eating his own poop.
  • Haha...no no he does not eat his own poop! lol

However, he does eat lots of snow.

Any adivce on how to introduce the puppy to can food (he has only eaten dry food moistened with water) without getting diareha
  • Start with small amounts and gradually increase the portion while decreasing the ratio of the old food. 4-5 days for transition should work. Or you can just use it as a topper on kibble.
  • In my experience, stinky head = allergies. Perhaps someone experieced with raising a JA on raw can pipe up.
  • I just wanted to update everybody that the switch in food has elminated the smell. : )

He is almost 6 months old and about 47 Pounds.

  • Good news! Usually smell like this is food related, so this makes sense!
