Well guys, Ryu's at his evaluation for Doggie Daycare right now. He'll be there for another 2.5 hours and they have webcams! I can't see the webcam from work but see if you can find the shiba! :-)

Whew! That takes a load off my back :-) I was nervous that he would be overwhelmed... but I REALLY like that daycare. They are very personable and seem to really care about each dog. I hope Ryu enjoys it there!!

that webcam idea is really really cool!

Yea it makes me feel better that they have more accountability that other daycares (knowing that the owner could be watching at any given time...)

yay!!! Can you tell if he's in the big dog or small dog area?
  • edited November -1
I think I saw him! That's cool! We used to take our dogs to daycare that had a webcam... I watched non-stop. lol

I thought I saw him too! He was chillin in the corner next to another dog just checking things out. I think he's in the big dog area. (If it was him that I actually saw).

I tried to take a snapshot of it to post the pic for you, but my evaluation copy of the screen capture program ran out and it put giant letters over him so you couldn't see it. Sorry. :-(

awww thanks Dave! :-) That was sweet of you to think of that!

I can see the 30 second snapshots on my phone but it's super TINY so I see a tan blur and think it's him lol

hey Pam - how did Ryu do with his evaluation?

by the way, to all of you out there. i wanted to introduce Ayako and myself. we live in Hawaii on the island of Oahu. we got her last week and she's 3 months old. this first week has been fun and stressful. i've been going home to check on her every 4 hours to let her out and play. it's been hard to go back to work. i can't wait for the weekend. we are also starting obedience training tomorrow.

i hope you don't mind. i've been reading this forum for the past couple of weeks preparing for our shiba. i wanted to thank all of you for posting your experiences and opinions. i've also been asking Pam for advice and reading her adventures with Ryu. it's been really helpful with getting Aya comfortable.

just wanted to say "howzit" (that is how we greet friends in hawaii)

by the way, Happy Aloha Friday

    Derek

Welcome Derek!!! So glad you finally posted :-)

So funny about our "adventures with Ryu".. ADVENTURES they have been!!!!! Thanks for asking about his evaluation! He did wonderful and play with another girl Shiba :-) Apparently, they have two "regular" Shibas that attend daycare so Ryu will have some twins there :-)

Now hurry up and post pics of sweet Aya!!! :-)

    howzit, Derek?
we love doggy spam (pictures) - especially Shibas! and since you are in Hawaii, we'd love landscape spam as well!

    Aloha Derek,

    Two niele questions:

-Am I correct in assuming you're taking the little one to the OTCH classes? Moach has been going to Crane Park on Thursdays with somewhat mixed results (but this is regular obedience and puppy school looked like a lot more fun).

-Is there a dog park in Aya’s future? We tend to haunt the McInerey Dog Park after work on the weekdays, but it gets a bit crowded on the weekends. It’s also nice because it has a small dog area.

I also warn folks that we’ve had some bad experiences at the Diamond Head Park. Although most of the owners there are responsible, it’s a big park and when things get out of hand it becomes impossible to control a large pack of dogs. The rules change when a dog’s brain switches to pack mode, and it isn’t always pretty.

Thank you for welcoming us to the pack.

    I'll post pic's soon.

diggah - we missed the enrollment with OTCH and since we wanted to start socialization ASAP, we enrolled with Sirius. a bit expensive, but it's in an enclosed environment compared to open grass (Aya needs her last vaccination and the vet mentioned keeping her off the grass would be the best). how do you like OTCH? would you recommend it? we may go with OTCH in the future. as for dog parks, we plan to take her. hopefully socialization with the other pups goes well. i've visited McInerey and can't wait to go.

Welcome Derek! I'd try out my pidgin on you but I'd probably get laughed at. :-/

So glad you decided to join us. And no worries on the lurking, a lot of people do it. That's part of what we're here for.

    Please post pics ASAP! :-)

I’ve heard good things about Sirius, it isn’t the cheapest but you’re looking at a 15 year investment so paying a bit upfront makes a lot of sense. And yes, while socialization is huge concern; I wouldn’t take a dog to the park until after the third set of shots either. Overall it sounds like you’re getting good advice.

As far as OTCH, I have mixed feelings. You have to remember that it is a club, and while some of the instructors have a great deal of experience; they are volunteering and the class size is such that it would be unreasonable to expect them to be able to deal with a lot of complex behavioral issues. Also, they focus on competitive obedience and agility training. As a result of this they tend to stick pretty close to their script, which is the old school “Koehler method” (aka jerk and praise). This means they rely on negative reinforcement fairly heavily, and some of the “corrections” can be rather unpleasant for both the dog and the owner.

In all fairness, in most cases their methods produce the goods; and I honestly believe that the instructors have the best interests of the dogs at heart. The problem is that dogs and owners have different levels of tolerance, and I couldn’t help but feel that at least in my case there are more effective ways to train my dogs (that, or I’m too much of a wimp to use the most effective methods).

All that being said; I’m keeping Mochi in the program. I’ve learned a great deal, I’ve gotten a lot of help and support, and someday I really want to see him doing agility work. Koda, on the other hand, is going to go to puppy school through the Kaimuki/Kaiser Community School program; which is a bit more positive reinforcement oriented. My thinking is that the more things I try, the more I’ll learn, and the better I’ll get at training my dogs.

diggah - you have two shibas? Mochi and Koda. must be a busy household. i didn't know their were community programs. i've only heard of OTCH, Sirius, other private obedience training and private individual trainers, but i had not heard of any community programs. sort of like school systems in hawaii; private schools (punahou, iolani) and public schools (kailua, kaiser)?? i'm curious to hear the learning curve of two dogs from the same household learing from two differnt methods.

diggah: I'm taking Ryu to the obedience classes at Kaimuki/Kaiser as well! We'll be in the 7 mos + class though. Hope it goes well! :-)

Ryu / diggah - if either of you don't mind, could i watch any of your classes? after we finish our first Sirius training session, we want to continue with training whether it be with Sirius or someone else.
  • edited November -1
You could ask the instructors if they mind you sitting in, but seeing as the classes are $32 and they don't start till the middle of June, I would urge you to seriously consider registering for them as well. My only advice is to not drag your feet because the classes only hold about 20 and they fill up fast (registration starts the 17th, I’ll be standing in line Saturday morning). That the information is available here:

    http://kcsa.k12.hi.us/

I’ll be attending the class at Jarrett Intermediate, I don’t know if Ryu is going there or to Kamamalu.

I think we're going to try the Kamamalu Park but we'll go where ever they can fit us in. Thanks for the link!
  • edited November -1
    yes, thanks for the link.

just wondering. what type of treatments do you folks use in hawaii for heartworm, fleas and ticks? we plan to take Aya to various places, we were thinking about going with interceptor and frontline.
  • RyuRyu
    edited November -1
We use heartgard and frontline. Haven't had any problem with either. :)
  • edited November -1
I believe we use interceptor and frontline, the little one isn't getting the flea meds yet but I'm sure she'll be starting them soon. Flea and tick season runs from January to late December in these parts.

I'm assuming you're thinking about meeting after puppy class, that should work out for us. Of course I know better than to make plans without getting the Mrs. to sign off on them, so you'll have to put us all down as a tenative for now.
