Durable toy ideas

edited January 2014 in General
Yucca is 6 1/2 months old now & I'm having trouble finding toys tough enough for her. Tennis balls get shredded, kongs ripped to pieces, and anything made of rope, cloth, or canvas doesn't stand a chance. We're down to just her bones and antlers. I feel bad because she loves to run & wrestle with toys but I can trust her for more then a second with anything anymore. If anyone has found anything extremely durable, whether home made or store bought, I'd like to hear about them

  • Meitou loves to tear and shred his toys, too. One of his favorite things to do is going hunting for the squeakers. He'll rip a toy open, pull out all the stuffing, and then pull out the squeaker to chew on. Case in point, he has a bear toy that is now headless...but he still loves to play with in.

One of the first batch of toys I got Meitou had a Tuffy octopus that is still in pretty good condition. Some strings are sticking out, but he hasn't been able to rip it apart yet. http://www.tuffietoys.com/

I've also found that he hasn't destroyed some rubber toys like the Hol-EE Roller ( http://www.petco.com/product/9437/JW-Pet-Hol-EE-Roller-Dog-Toy.aspx ) or other rubber balls. He loves his jolly ball, though he did shred the rope part. He still loves playing with the actual ball, though. http://www.petco.com/product/9608/Jolly-Pet-Romp-n-Roll-Dog-Toy.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch
  • We had one of those hol-ee rollers since Yucca was tiny. it was one of her favorite toys til about 2 weeks ago she tore it to bits. is the jolly ball a hard plastic or is it rubber?
  • @navydog I would get a thick plastic toy, and "teach" them how to play with it. I had the same problem until I showed them to roll the ball, not chew on it.. And when you see them chewing on it correct them. Not only for your wallet sake but because they can accidentally swallow something hazardous.

Suggested toys- treat balls , kong has a really tough one like a red cone type. Search amazon kong treat dispenser. Get the one rated for large dogs.

These are great because they can't really grip them, but they keep them very busy. :)

We also have a giant rope tug, almost 5ft long and incredibly thick. It survives 4-way tug with all the dogs. ~
  • I would suggest the Cuz line of toys but even my NK has figured out a way to puncture the squeaker into the Cuz. The high pitched squeak excites her and drives her to chew harder and more intensely.

I use this with Kiyoshi, It's very difficult for him to pick up and almost imposible for him to chew on, it's a hard plastic type material. He spins that thing all over the floor trying to get the treats so it keeps him busy. I guess I've been lucky he doesn't chew up his toys, just pulls the stuffing out of some of them. Although he breaks EVERY squeaker within as little as 10 seconds, the longest lasting one was about 20 minutes.

Maybe try some puzzle toys? Maybe she'll be more interested in figuring out how to get the treats/food out rather than straight out chewing it...?
  • I like RuffWear, ChuckIt!, and Planet Dog rubber toys. Katana has eaten everything except that stuff.

+1 for planet dog! Kouda has a Venus, strawberry, and an Earth. However, the land masses on the earth are not durable and had to be pulled off - the naked ball still has the logo, so it looks like an eye ball. I like that they are all minty!

He also has a JW Pet Grass Ball, and some kong squeezz jels (pig, frog, donut, stick)

  • Planet Dog and the Cuz toys are pretty good here.

I don't often buy Planet Dog, but I really like their toys. Really durable - just not "Malamute durable". None of my other dogs have wrecked them. The Cuz toys stand up pretty good in my house, too. London (Malamute) will surgically remove the squeaker for his first course of action, but their corpses stay around the house forever until he gets bored one day and shreds them.

The other thing we like are moose and elk antlers. London and TK looove them. I'll have to get a new elk antler soon, but the moose is still holding up well.

I know my Mal isn't a NK, but my NK is pretty gentle with his toys. I figure, if it's Malamute proof, it'll probably stand up pretty well against a NK.

We still get tennis balls and stuffed animals for the purpose of letting the dogs shred them. Poor TK's happiest moments are parading around with a tennis ball, but London destroys them on sight.
  • Ok so I looked into planet dog since that was the most suggested. I bought the planet dog orbee dimond plate ball. She's only had it for half a day and so far so good. She spent the first 15 min bouncing around it then spent the next half hour rolling on it. She has tried laying down and gnawing on it but she does i take it and roll or throw it. Im just worried about her taking chunks off but it seems to be holding up.
I also got her a goughnut ring from Dogtuff.com. We havent tried it yet.. its a bit softer then i was expecting. If these dont work, Im going to get one of those jolly eggs @Sangmort mentioned.
I also like the puzzle toy suggestion @Dragonfly. Yucca is really smart, maybe if she had something to challenge her.
  • @NavyDog, I have a feeling she'll figure out the puzzle toys quick. I got a couple for Kona and they lasted a while 10 min :P
  • either she will figure it out quickly or she will decide to just chew thru it to get the treats

I find the best toys at the most random stores that are so durable! I found a flat, leather donut at Steinmart and a flat, leather rhino with a bottle inside at Ross. So far, most durable stuffed toys ever!

Tough leather stuffed toys - try them out if you can find them...Steinmart or Ross!

Kira manages to demolish Planet Dog toys, she's a little beast!
  • @Kira_Inu, the leather toys are available in many stores as many re-brands, commonly ABO Gear or Aussie Naturals. There's also Advanced Pet and Ethical Pet. My local pet store even sells them rebranded with their name. Many are also available online at places like Amazon. Looks like Ace Hardware sells the Rhino too, http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=29329076

Kouda has gone through a few of their leather and burlap toys. But eventually he destroys them all. He is a heavy gnawer. The pheasant was the worst - destroyed within 5 minutes. And then he wants to EAT the bits. So no more for us! Plus I don't really trust the origin of their materials if they can be bought wholesale so easily.

Anyway... I'm curious which Planet Dog toys Kira destroyed. They do have a chew rating on each, and some are not designed for chewing. We only get the ones Kouda cannot fit into the back of his mouth.
  • Thanks for those links @zandrame

The leather and canvas toys are great, but Kira's true love is balls. She loves ALL balls and none have survived besides the Chuck-It balls. Not even the Planet Dog ones. I looked up and found which one she destroyed. And it is the highest rating, too:

    Orbee-Tuff® Orbee Ball
    5 out of 5 Chompers

Rated TOP Product of the Year by numerous magazines and called the “World’s Best Dog Ball” by industry experts – this doggie-durable toy has a rating of 5 out of 5 chompers on the Durability Scale. It is minty, buoyant, recyclable and 100% guaranteed. Any time. Every time.

(doggie-durable, yeah right... I will email them with a picture of it. Maybe they'll replace it with something else?)
  • @NavyDog Oh, the jolly ball is pretty hard. Meitou's has gouges in it, but mostly near the holes where the rope went through. Other than that it has been pretty sturdy.
  • @WhoBitMe ok cool. I will have to try it. we had a jolly ball at the husky rescue i used to work for but it was the one with the handle on it and that handle was easily chewed off. The jolly ball with the rope should be fine, i also like that jolly egg.
On a side note the planet dog ball is still intact (so far) and even more exciting, today Yucca finally learned how to play fetch!! Now maybe she will prefer to chase the ball instead of just chewing on it.

Haha awwe yay!! That's awesome.! Take a video of her playing fetch, I wanna see little sis! :D or rather she's technically older, so big sis!
  • I'm going through the same thing with Kenzo. The only thing that has worked is antlers and treat stuffed kong like toys. Nothing else has lasted very long.
  • Yea the antlers are great but keep an eye on the kong. that used to be Yucca's kennel toy til she hit about 4 months & destroyed it. So far the planet dog diamond ball is still going strongly recommend it. it even has a hole to put treats in it
