  • The "after you get your puppy" was very good, a little repetitive but overall very helpful :)
  • Yeah, it's really hard to just pick a few, because some are so important. I really like Control Unleashed, so I'd go for that--while it is based in training a pup for agility, what it teaches is good for any dog. Something by Karen Pryor, about clicker training would be good. Miller and Donaldson are always good.

All these books use positive training techniques.

Read some of the reviews on Amazon, and/or download sample chapters if they are available, which will help you get a sense of what the books are like.

    bump!

And adding "When Pigs Fly: Training Success with Impossible Dogs" by Jane Killion.

Also, years and years ago I read a book called "Catch Your Dog Doing Something Right" which was fun and had cool training games in it. Author is Krista Cantrell. It had lots of photos, which was useful too!
  • "When Pigs Fly..." is a good one. I love that the author/trainer has bull terriers. I got really tired of books written by sport trainer/behaviorists about their damn border collies.
  • I hear you, Chrystal! I felt the same way!
  • Thanks for this thread, it will be greatly helpful with my new puppy.
