He is almost two....

edited April 2014 in Akita (秋田犬)
My Kota boy is almost two! About time to get him a sister.....probably in the fall. He is starting to play a bit too rough at the dog park....need to have a playmate for him that we can train them together and avoid upsetting other dog owners if they play a bit rough.

  • Beautiful dog, i like seeing AA's on here. Someone might disagree with me but i dont think most akita's are dog park material, particularly when they start getting around his age, so that doesn't surprise me. Are you looking at getting another Akita as a "sister" or another breed of dog?
  • Kota is super handsome!
  • Thanks!

He did great at the dog park until recently, but I agree it's probably his age. It's the only place he can really run free though, so will need to find off-times to go....or find an empty ball field.

Thought about rescuing another large breed dog but hubby really wants to get another pup from the same breeder as Kota. Will be different parents. Then he will have a playmate if we go the empty ball field route.
  • Yeah i used to take my Akita to dog parks when she was younger, so she had experience being around other dogs, and we never had problems with her when she was younger. However i stopped going when she reached maturity, and it's probably a good thing that i did. An empty ball field might be better for most Akitas, it would seem to me. Do you have a backyard your akita can free in?

  • No, no fenced yard....but he does great on leash. We just like to find somewhere for him to run free, too.
  • If possible, a fenced yard would definitely be something worth investing in -- if you can. I personally will be building a new 6 foot wooden fenced yard, and know it can be expensive, but definitely worth it if you can...If you go the empty ball field route, if you can, i would try and find one that is enclosed (if you hadnt already thought of this) just in case it seems something it wants to take off after while off leash. But thats just what strikes me.

Good luck with your boy, again he's really handsome!
  • He's gorgeous!

Most dogs mature around 2, sometimes younger in smaller breeds. I think Akitas are slow to mature, so it is definately around 2-3 for them. anyway, mentioning this, because when they get mature, they get less dog tolerant.

Good luck getting a friend for him--sounds like that is something he would really like!
  • He is lovely! He reminds me of photos ive seen of my partner's childhood Akita (one of them had a similar look in his face-wise beyond his years :-) ).
  • He is gorgeous! :)
  • Thanks! Koyuki.....funny because we call him "old man" occasionally because he has always acted older and not like a puppy..... Extra quiet, calm, and likes his personal space. LOL. Even as a baby with his littermates.....he would lay back while the other puppies crammed around the bowl.n when they were done, he would calmly go eat whatever they left. Even today he waits in another room when I feed him....then he walks to me to "thank" me, and then casually goes to his bowl. Funny boy!
