Homeowner's Insurance

edited July 2014 in Akita (秋田犬)
Hey all,

I was wondering what homeowner's insurance you all use. We were looking at a bunch but they all blacklist Akitas and will cancel our policy if they find out we have one. We'll probably have to switch insurance companies soon. How do you guys deal with insurance when many companies don't allow certain breeds?

  • I think State Farm doesnt discriminate breeds. Some ins co. will accept a listed breed if the dog passes Canine Good Citizen. Mine are mutts and 2 kai ken, so not listed, but maybe someone with listed breeds will be along to help soon.
  • We have State Farm, and they're the only insurance company that didn't even ask if we have dogs or what type. If they're available in your area, definitely give them a call.
  • it also depends on states. In some states, its not legal to discriminate on breed. I have Farmers Insurance, and at least in our state (NM) they don't care about breed at all. they just said if you have two dog related claims (involving same dog) they either ask you to get rid of the dog or drop you.

I did have a dog related claim once when my now passed on GSD bit my friend's brand new car because there was a squirrel in her engine compartment. They told me such problems were surprisingly common, but they didn't have any thoughts or concerns about the breed of dog.
  • State Farm is what most Akita people around here recommend.
  • State farm eh? I was also told Allstate by someone. I'll have to switch to them once our contract is up.
  • Allstate does not offer home owner's insurance in all areas, so make sure that it's available by you before seriously considering them. I personally don't care for them since they have been known to triple (car) insurance coverage out of the blue.
  • Yep, we use State Farm with our JA/AA tweenie.
  • I've used State Farm for 36 years and have had many Akitas in the past 25 years. No claims about my dogs, and the agent met several of them.

We have a shiba and a JA, and Farmers in California
  • I am a insurance agent in CA, be careful with Farmers, they tend to underinsure and not pay claims

Mercury insurance will accept an Akita with a signed form excluding liability coverage if the dog were to cause harm to anyone. And they have very good home insurance rates!
  • We have State Farm here as well in CA (with an Akita).
  • I found this link: http://www.dogexpert.com/siberian-huskies-join-list-blacklisted-dog-breeds/

It does say that State Farm and Farmers so not discriminate against breed, but look at individual cases.
  • I think having a dog would be a PLUS and should cause your insurance to go down! My dog would thrwart break-ins and save them tons of money in payouts. Plus he's the secondary house alarm too incase I forget to set mine at night. I wonder if it is possible to do a study and see how much insurance companies lose due to break-in claims/home invasion claims for people with no dogs, vs. paying out attack claims for people with aggressive dogs.
  • Insurance companies and extended warranties usually have a formula they work on. In this case they are likely using some equation that determines the payout on dog bite claims is higher than the theoretical chance that your home will be broken into.
