New to Site

edited June 2008 in General
New to the site my Shiba is 8 months old now. He is on the biggish side for an inu. I always call him Inu. He weighs about 28 lbs. He is definitely all Shiba though except the cleanliness part. He loves mud and loves swimming....

He is very suspicious of new people but warms up after about 20 min. Does anyone have any suggestions about recall i can not get him to come ever and usually not even with treats unless it is something over the top good. We live in Baltimore, MD.

Oh wow, he's quite a cutie! Welcome to the forum! :-)

As for recall, the only thing I can suggest is using treats and working with him constantly. I personally haven't been doing this, but I plan to...Get 30+ foot light leash for him and start in the house. Let him get away from you and call him back. If he comes, give him lots of praise and treats. If he doesn't, use the leash to gently guide him back to you. Do this often, three or for times a day for five or so minutes at a time. Once he gets that down well, start doing it outside and in places with more distractions. Good luck!

Welcome to the forum! Recall is not something shibas are famous for - that's for sure. Davge's suggestion above is a great one!

Hi and welcome. Your boy is very handsome. And your cat....how much does he/she weigh?

    Welcome

I would say, first, make peace with the fact that he can improve with recall, but they are a willful breed and obey whe THEY want to.

Trying running from him, clapping. They LOVE chase games.

Hello! Welcome to the forum! Your shiba is very cute!

For Recall Training, What Dave said is very good training advice. Im not sure if he walks well on a lead, but if not, I would first tackle that before working on Recall. Once he is good on the lead, you can get a 30 ft. lead and start giving him some slack. Is there a specific word or noise you use to get his attention other than his name? If not, make one up and then use that word/noise consistently with his training.

When he gets distracted by something, make the noise/word and when he looks at you, bend down, call his name, and say "come" in a happy chipper voice. If he doesn't come to you, yank on the lead a bit to get him coming in your direction and then when he gets to you, praise him like crazy.

    Hope that helps!

What a beautiful black/tan Shiba! and welcome... Shiba's are quite funny, most of the time. They know exactly what you are saying but whether they choose to listen is an entirely different story. Mine mostly comes when he feels it won't appear he's lost control by doing so. Plus, Shiba puppies have ADD :-) Dave gives some great advice. Good luck and sending loads of patient wishes your way.

Welcome. As Jessica said, recall can improve, but it will never be 100% or even close with a Shiba. In the house Nemo looks at me like I'm insane if I try to just call him over, well most of the time anyhow.

Also your boy isn't biggish, he's big!

Jessica that is quite funny. Its true that may work he loves to play tag / chase.

He loves fetch too unless you want him to come inside then he gives me that look like what do you think i am that stupid. I never appreciated the whole "undog" thing before getting him. He is very... Independent. He could spend 2 hours alone outside and not miss me one bit. My wife and i can get him to do come when we go outside and train with or when the trainer is over (he acts like a genius and will obey any command when the trainer is over) but unless we are in training "mode" he generally thinks i am crazy for asking him to come or come inside. He sits and lies down very well and knows his name. We use OK Akira to get his attention and that seems to work well that is what the trainer told us to use. I tell you he is so smart you can see him thinking and weighing the options whenever you present him with a treat or try training him.

That picture of him is when he was a puppy (4 months) so no the cat isnt enormous though it is a fat cat. I tried to load multiple pictures didnt work for me. Here is one of him after playing in the thunderstorm and digging in the mud. He is a crazy Inu thats for sure. He is completely uneffected by noise but very catious and timid around strangers. My neighbor was cutting up a tree with a chainsaw and he thought it was the coolest thing sat there watching him through the fence then the neighbor turned off the chainsaw and put it down walked towards him and he took off... I laughed over that one.

One more. I am at work so i dont have many recent pictures here. This is from this past weekend. Akira smiling. :)

I know part of the problem is i just dont spend enough time with the recall training and clearly he will never be a perfect recall dog. I just wish he would come inside when it was time you know on my time not his.....

So very cute! To do multiple pictures in one comment, you can edit your comment and attach them one at a time that way.

Yeah, i just figured that out when i put the wrong picture in the last one and edited it. Oh well now i look like a post hog...

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome and thanks for the kind words about Akira. i love him to death already we just got him on new years eve day this year.

    I bet he's a total character!

I love the mud all over his face. Very cute!

As for recall into the house, I suggest using a slightly different approach for that. Since he knows sit and stay, bring a treat outside with you and get him to sit and stay. Put a leash on him and give him lots of praise and the treat. Then tell him "inside" and walk him inside and give him another treat and lots of praise. After he gets good at that, drop the leash and walk in next to him. And so on.

Good luck, and thanks for sharing all the pictures!

With that great big yard, why would he want to come inside? But seriously, Dave's advice is really good.

What a handsome black and tan boy! Welcome to the forum. Good luck with the recall. I had all my Malamutes trained to a reliable recall and I didn't even try with the Shiba!, due to the Shiba personality and the fact that I got them as adults.

I have tried going out with treats and then grabbing him or putting a leash on him. Did not work he is too smart for that if he sees me come out with a leash he won't get near me and grabbing him has made him more leary of me outside even when playing frisbee. So that bit back fired. Our trainer says we should leave a 6' leash on him while he is outside that way it would be easier to grab him but i worry about it getting caught on something like the fence or a tree. He doesn't seem to have a high enough food drive to really get him to respond well to just using treats to get him to come. Cheese sort of works but unless i bust out burgers or roast beef forget it.
