Ryu's First Hike!

Since we live in Hawaii and it would be a shame to continue shutting ourselves inside the house on the weekends to spend time with Ryu, we decided to take him out to enjoy the views! We introduced him to the world of hiking this weekend with a short easy paved walk up to the Makapuu Lighthouse.... here are the photos!

wow - what a pretty place. I'm so envious of you guy for living in Hawaii!

Ryu looked pooped at the end too, that's great!

Thanx for sharing the pics.  Smile

So pretty!!!  Niko is terrified of heights, Chad blames me for that (im scared of heights).  She would not enjoy that view.  I like the before pic in the car and he is all alert and then conked out after.

That looks like a really nice place to hike...

Can't say I'm not a tad bit jealous.

Gorgeous. He looks nice and calm in those pictures too. The first few times I went hiking with Lucy I swear she was in sensory overload. She couldn't even walk in a straight line due to all the smells to check out. I don't think she even noticed that we weren't on a street because she was too busy smelling the ground. Good boy Ryu!

Tremendous burst of jealousy...just kidding! Beautiful place and beautiful dog. Just wish we had that lovely weather here in PA now! (I really don't like winter, but my husband does).

Thanks guys, it was an absolute blast. And yes Brad, he was definitely pooped by the end! However, Tim and Ryu still beat me to the bottom :-) That's pretty sad when a 4.5 month old puppy has more endurance than a 25 year old!

Rachael: That is Ryu's favorite spot in the truck....Tim won't let us take my car when we bring Ryu places because he claims that he doesn't want him to scratch the leather... but I think he secretly likes it when Ryu cuddles with him while he drives the truck :-)

Dave: Ryu was definitely all over the place at the beginning. I thought we'd never reach the top! Eventually, Tim got him moving and we were fine.. that is, until we started catching up to the other people on the trail. Ryu was all over them (basically showing off) - but I'm really glad that he was so comfortable with all the people around. There were a few other pups as well but Ryu wasn't as interested in them as the people... one person even thought he was a rescue dog in training (I guess because Tim was wearing a HFD (Hawaii Fire Department) t-shirt and Ryu was wearing a matching harness...) but I assured them that the only things Ryu rescues are treats!

Kris: Boy, do I want to switch places with you! We're originally from the East Coast and we miss it terribly. Hawaii has its bonuses but we really miss having all four seasons, being able to snuggle by a fire, and living near our family! We are trying to enjoy Hawaii as much as possible this year because we'll move sometime this summer but honestly, I can't wait to get back to the south! :-)

Romi: You will definitely have to make some time to visit Hawaii! Before gas prices go over $5 a gallon and hotel rooms cost more than $400 a night :) One word of advice, if you come to Hawaii, don't stay on one island! Make sure to allow some time to island-hop (a cruise might be more bang for your buck) because some of the best places are on Kauai and the Big Island and most people miss out staying on Oahu the whole time.

Yeah, outdoors sports are great for dogs. This last fall I introduced Sadie to out Kayak (2 man) and She did do quite well, until she tried to jump out to chase some geese floating past.

Funny pic: Ryu couldn't (was scared to) jump down this ledge because it was so steep so Tim crouched down to encourage him to jump and instead Ryu jumped onto Tim!

See, this is what sucks about HI, you don't have to work hard for those views! :-P

Love the spam. It looks like you guys had a great day! Ryu is such a character and he's always smiling. :-)

I LOVE that leash!!! :-) thanks for introducing me to the world of ruffwear lol

I'm thankful that even in the summertime here, it's still really breezy outside so we can still do hikes (with a lot of water breaks) and Ryu can still keep up. Thanks to the waist-wraparound leash, he was actually pulling me up some of the steep hills

aww man! I should have told you we were heading that way - hindsight, huh? I think Aya would like that hike and you could carry her when/if she gets tired (though I doubt she would tire easily lol) :-)
