Looking for a Home

edited May 2008 in Shiba Inu (柴犬)
Hi, I've been a lurker on the Forum but finally have something to post! I'm trying to help out a fellow Shiba Inu rescuer with a 6 year old male Shiba that needs a new home.

If any of you are interested, please email me and I can provide further details. Thank you!

Welcome Masako! Please do let us know where you're located so we can cross post to local lists if appropriate.

And, if you've got some time, tell us a bit about yourself too.

    Hi everyone!

Wow - thanks for the warm welcomes! We're in Los Angeles. I'm a long time Shiba owner - Winnie is my 5th Shiba and she's a little over a year old. I also have a pet parrot, and a 14 year old Shepherd mix. I got Winnie from a breeder out here in Southern California, but previous Shibas were from Japan. They're great little dogs and I can't imagine not having a Shiba in the house. (Ivan - I am on Facebook~ but other than that....?)

Yes, please feel free to cross post. The info that I received from the owner is below:

Miko is a full bred Shiba Inu and is 6 years old with updated shots and is neutered. He's roughly 25-30 pounds, so he's a bit big for a Shiba. They love him very much and have had him since he was only 8 weeks old, but now have a toddler and Miko is having trouble adapting. The owners would like to find a suitable home for him. The right home would be one where there are no small children, preferably a single person or a couple. He likes to be around his owners and needs to be loved and attended to (like any dog). But at the same time he is very independent and doesn't need constant attention and is often content just resting or playing in our the back yard. He also is used to spending a lot of time indoors, and for several years he lived with us in a condo where his only access to being outside was a balcony and the walks we would take him on each day (and he only went to the bathroom on those walks, he didn't go on the balcony).

Miko is pretty solitary--we often joke that he's like a cat, meaning he likes to be with us but doesn't care to socialize with other dogs. There have been dogs that he gets along very well with--they tend to be bigger, and often female. He also seems to get along well with other Shibas that we've met.

Miko has sensitive skin and we've found that giving him dog food that doesn't have cornmeal in it has been beneficial. He's currently eating Innova Evo--he likes it and it has helped. Also, we bathe him with shampoo that has oatmeal and that also aids his itchies, when he has them. I have to say that we've found that when he's anxious or misses us when he's at the dogsitters he'll start gnawing on his own skin. It can be problematic if we don't treat it and give him some benadryl or hydrocortisone. Other than that, he's totally healthy and can be a lot of fun at the dog beach or a great walking companion!

He's a very handsome dog and, well, he'll be very missed.

I do have some photos and more info if anyone is interested...

Masako - I thought your name sounded familiar too, but couldn't put my finger on it...We are part of the same Shiba Inu Meetup group! I haven't been to any meetups due to Ninja's issues...but hopefully one of these days I will be able to make it. I just logged into meetup.com after months and just read about Miko. I hope he finds a great home soon. BTW, did you happen to attend the Beikoku Shiba Inu Aikokai Specialty Show earlier this year? I noticed you made a little message about it on the group message board. A few of the members were there including me, we might have seen eachother (we were the group with 4 Shikoku, 1 kai, 1 shiba, and 1 boxer)! Anyway, glad you joined...hope to hear stories and see pics of Winnie!

    Welcome to the pack, Masako!

Good luck on finding that boy a home!

Romi~ Yes we did see each other. In fact, I've posted pictures of the Shikokus on my Flickr site. I'm sure we saw you (err~ your dogs) there! Here's the most recent picture of Winnie, at our meetup from last week. She's a hysterical little dog, and my 5th Shiba Inu. Shibas #1 & #2 came from Japan about 20 years ago. Since then, we've had two pups from two separate litters. But they have all now passed over the rainbow bridge. And then, last year, I got Winnie.

As for the 6 year old boy, Miko, I think we may have found a good home for him. If all goes well, he'll be in his new home this weekend. :)

Have a great weekend everyone, and thanks for the warm welcome!

Dope! I just realized I never posted a link to my flickr site: flickr.com/masakoy
Feel free to check it out, I'm always posting Winnie's latest photos there. I also have a blog for Ms Winnie. It's: awinnieday.blogspot.com

And, I have great news on Miko - he was rehomed to a nice lady that the former owners met and did a site visit with. They were sad to say "goodbye" to Miko, but really thought it was the best for their family. (Miko was having trouble adjusting to a baby/toddler in the home.)

Hi Masako, it's Harlow's owner here from the SD Shiba Meetup. It was great seeing you two at the recent picnic. Koshi also sends his woo woos to Winnie and you.

Hi Harlow & Koshi's owner! I thought it was you from the meetup! The drive down to SD was worth it - you guys have a beautiful dog park! Gosh, we have dog park envy....
