Is there something wrong with Ahi?

It's kinda sad, but Ahi is being super sweet to us lately and it is making us think there is something wrong with her.

Could this be a sign that something is wrong? Any thoughts?

Ahi usually wants nothing to do with us, but this week she has wanted nothing more than to lick us and be by our side, she is acting like Loa. It's creeping us out. WTF?

She's finally appreciating all that you do.

Brad I am not an expert. I do not own the variety or dogs you do. But I do have three dogs. And I do have to say that there comes times when the "stand off" one is more affectionate than the ones that are. I notice it comes with age. Dogs can't rationalize one plus one equals two, but I think they realize love. It might take one dog longer to realize that than another, but they do. I say return the affection while still giving that extra attention to detail that something may be wrong. If nothing is wrong, the next thing you know all your dogs will act in the same way. Giving love to receive it in return.

That is so weird, because Rakka's been sweeter lately, too. She was pretty sweet to us to begin with but I've noticed her being sweeter to Skella, Tojo, and Isaac. Maybe she's mellowing out because of her age? Tojo mellowed out big time around this age and it seems like Rakka's doing the same, but it's too soon to know for sure. Or maybe she feels better because of her surgery.

Dogs are weird sometimes. Last week, I lost control of Yoshi on a walk. He got me off balance and dragged me a about a foot (which makes me believe he's stronger than my former business partner's Dobe who was nearly twice his weight when I was caring for him) when he went after a cat. Luckily my neighbor got to Yoshi before he got to the cat.

It didn't phase him one bit when Yoshi saw me on the floor. When we got back to the house, I left him outside in the porch since my mom was cleaning the kitchen and I didn't want him sniffing and licking the floor. He wouldn't stop peeking through the door and started whimpering. So I went out to see what he wanted, and he started licking my wound and kept giving me this look as if he were sorry.

In any event, maybe nothing's wrong with her but it's you she's thinking about. Perhaps something in the oven :p?

Maybe she's finished maturing & gotten out of her rebellious phase :o She did recently turn 2 ;)

    Or maybe there's a blue moon out :p ~

Aww...I would LOVE to witness sweet Ahi. LOL. When I met her, I thought she wanted to eat me. LOL.

Maybe this is something new about Shikoku behavior. After the age of 2, they become more affectionate? It would be interesting if after Loa turned 2, she became more like Ahi...

One thing I did forget to add. Watch the pack. If the pack is nursing and showing extra attention there may be something out of the normal. If your pack follows the lead. Sounds like you have a very itellegent dog

Hmmmm. Does this mean no more Ahi violating guests? :-( j/k. I have no idea what it could be. The first thought that came to my head was age though. So I second (or third, or fifth or whatever) others have said.

She has had so many health issues that may have put her in a place where she was feeling it necessary to be extra guarded.

Perhaps now she is healing up and therefore is feeling more confident in her body. With that confidence she can ease up and actually enjoy herself more. You and Jen have taken such great care of her, I am sure she is aware of the dedication you have shown her and is responding accordingly.

Now that Piglets knee is healing up she is more playful and showing more affection to the other two dogs. I know when I am working with an injury I am less than snuggly. Jay has a knee injury right now, and he is NO FUN.

I say bask in it! Perhaps this is the beginning of some happy stuff for the Anderson pack!

    Ok Brad...that makes me LMAO!
I agree it may be age. Once Niko turned 2 she became more and more affectionate.
I think when Loa turns 2 she will turn into sugar!

I agree with the above, i know you can't compare Shiba to Shikoku, but Kitsu is getting tons more cuddly, at the weirdest times too (like he'll be playing to the death with Tsuki, stop on the dime, then come lay on my feet. Weird)
He turns 2 in a couple months. I also think its because the weather has become a bit drastically cold at night. It was 40 degrees last night! Kitsu was all over me and my quilt last night!

I think considering her age, her injury and healing time, her happy little life and that its getting a bit colder out - she is probably becoming a snuggle bug! Enjoy it!

I always thought Ahi was sweet....the first time she met me she ran up to me and gave kisses...instantly...She stole my heart!!!

You have had dogs for a long time now...you know when something is wrong....I would only worry when she doesnt want to do anything but lay around.....She might just be missing me...you never know....ask her!!!

Well I think the age change / maturity thing is the favorite theory around here. I agree with it too, and if Rakka [being Ahi's sister] is being sweeter maybe we have hit that magic Shikoku age when they mature.

I think Jessica may be right too, Ahi has been in pain most of her life due to knees or health issues, so maybe she finally feels better. Good point!

She has been noticeably sweeter to us, and mildly sweeter w/ the dogs. She still beats them all up every morning [in "play"], but we caught her snuggleing with Loa yesterday! We asked what was wrong and she jumped up like "I wasn't doing that. shut up! I'm tough!". :o\

Lenny - LOL! She may be missing you, you are one of the few that *liked* to be violated by Ahi. :o)

I was kind of violated......she was amazing...for my first time...lol

    LMAO!

I think Chad is a little concerned he may not be violated again by Ahi...he was a little sad that this side is coming out of her...LOL

I also agree with the age maturity and Jessica on the health issues & recovery.

Continue to monitor her and see what surprises she has instore for you, Jen and the rest of the pack.

Kei-kun has been particularly sweet with me practically his entire life. Does this mean that next year when he turns two years of age he is gonna be a terror? Should I be scared, lol?

-pets Ahi- What a good girl!

Oh yeah, also wanted to add that Rakka is a beefcake lately. She's more bulky and muscley. Is Ahi like that, too?

I think that this is a Shikoku revolution!

Oh, it's great that we can learn a little more about the breed as everyone's shika's grow together! How cool :)

Since Shikas & Kai are medium sized dogs, I was never really sure about their "mature age" so I'm guessing it's 2 years like big dogs. [ as opposed to shibas which are 1 year ] Would I be wrong in assuming that? :o

Brad, you need to take a picture of Snuggly-Ahi, is the mischief gone from her eye when she does it? lol~

Heidi - Hmmm, I am not sure. She has been looking more like an ogre again, but I figured that was because her coat was coming back and she is rebuilding her muscles from surgery. Her muscles had atrophied from the lack of play time. I'll keep an eye on it and let you know.

Osy - Even before Ahi crossed this "threshold" she always had a very sweet look on her face when she was giving/getting love. She is actually very sweet - just kinda.... well.... passionate. :o)

Very well put Brad, I love Ahi even though I thought I was near death many times getting her love!

Osy-Niko didnt really mature until 2, dont know about other shiba's

Agreed, I'm still waiting to see what a mature Tsuki and Kitsune act like... Hachi seems much more mature and she turned 2 yesterday.
