Mylie ran away tonight (& she's back! phew)

edited October 2008 in General
I'm sitting on the couch sending an email to my boss, I figure Mylie is sleeping on the floor in the kitchen like she usually does after her walks at night. About an hour of complete silence goes by and I poke my head up from my laptop, and ask my fiance... Hey, where's the monster?
I go out into the kitchen, and see the back door is open but the screen door is shut... I search EVERYWHERE. When I get no response, I start to panic... It doesn't take long before I start tearing the house apart looking for a flashlight. My fiance jumps in his truck and starts driving around the nearby roads and fields. Ten minutes go by and I still can't find a flashlight... That's when I started FLIPPING OUT... Frantic, crying, breathing heavy... I take our crappy key chain LED and start running our normal walk. As I watch tractor trailers speed by our house at 70mph I start to panic even more.
I'm searching for her in the dark with minimal light for at least a half an hour. I'm sure you can imagine the devastated state I'm in at this point. I probably sounded insane screaming her name. So I'm walking through the field back towards the house, and I see Cory's truck pull in the driveway. His high beams flick on and I hear him yell. I have no idea where my energy came from after working yesterday for 11 hours and today for 12 hours, forgetting my horribly sore feet I take off SPRINTING towards the house. I hear him yell, I saw here! She's right here somewhere! Another few minutes of frantic searching in the neighbors yards and ours (about 6 acres of land) and we finally see her and corner her in the neighbors back yard...
Mylie is having a frickin blast... Little sh*t... She is zooming around the yard in circles, so fast that we can't grab her. I finally decide to crouch down and call her over, which I should have done in the first place. SHE COMES RIGHT TO ME AFTER 5 MINUTES OF CHASING HER!
So we investigate when we get inside the house, and we honestly think Mylie can open the screen door because it definitely closes all the way on its own, even if you leave it open, and there's no other way she could have gotten out.

Omg.... I'm still a mess. I'M SO RELIEVED SHE'S OK...

Update: Mylie smells funky... not a bad smell, but not a good one either, just weird and I can't place it. Hmmmm, I wonder what she got into on her little solo adventure.

Oh man, I freaked when I read the title of this thread. That's gotta be devastating. I'm really glad she's home and safe. Too bad she won't associate her bath with punishment for running away. :-/

Im so glad she is ok. I know that panic!!
For (hopefully no) future endeavors...The best way to catch a pain in the ass shiba...get it to chase you. Niko ran out one day and I had the neighbor kids run through the cul de sac and they ran into the house and she chased them right in. Chasing and catching them is an impossible task.
Awesome that she came right to you calling her.

    I'm glad she's back safe.
That must have been a scary experience. Crazy teenage Shibas!

I'm so releived that you caught her ! Be careful because my Akira always watch us opening doors and he has learned how to open them by himself that way. If your screen door is one of those that you only need to push to open you should maybe think of a way to lock it. Aww the downsides of living with an intelligent dog ;)

Maybe you could edit the topic line to say she is home safe, so people know?

Mylie could have rolled in any number of things outside, most likely some sort of crap from some animal, or maybe an animal corpse.

I am so glad she is home safe, that feeling of knowing the dog is gone and you don't know where, is the worst. I've never had it happen with Nemo, but it happened with his brother Turi when I was dog sitting him. Absolute worst feeling ever. Complete panic. Luckily we got Turi back too.

I hope you had a nice drink or six.

I'd start locking the screen door.

Melissa, I am so sorry! Mylie is a little sneak! Super glad she is home safe, though. I bet she slept like a champ last night. :)

Bella knows how to open the screen door, so we have a lock on it where she can not reach. Just one of those little hook locks, but it does the trick.

Changed title, sorry! I was super stressed when I wrote this. So the story doesn't end there, of course. 6 years ago I hurt my ankle pretty bad. A few surgeries and tons of psysical therapy later and I'm pretty much back to normal. Well last night while chasing Mylie I did something to make it hurt so badly that I probably should have called into work. I can hardly walk so I put myself on desk duty for the day. I'm bored to tears... Mylie is sooooooooo getting a bath for this!

I'm glad to hear she's back - I can't imagine how that must have felt.

Hoping your ankle feels better soon!

Wew....I am glad she is back safe and sound! The little stinker, you can bet she is going to try whatever she did to get out a second time (LOL). I would watch to see what her tactic is.

Time for some baby locks on the screen door or other doors she puzzling with. We have baby locks on all the kitchen cabinets, have removed all notes from the refridge. doors and changed the type of knob on the door that goes to the garage and pantry. Once you have a puzzler you have to be one step ahead.

    Hope you feeling better soon!
