Help! I'm stuck at the dog park and I can't get out!

edited October 2008 in Shiba Inu (柴犬)
My wife took now 8-months old Koji to the dog park this morning for the first time without me. So of course I get a call at work about 11:15.....

Babe, you have to come to the dog park! I can't get Koji. He won't come to me!

Me: Did you try running away from him to get him to come to you?

Yes, but as soon as I try to get a hold of him he runs away. One time I did manage to grab his harness and he bit me!

Me: OK, well I'm sure he was just play biting. He probably just isn't ready to go yet. Give him more time to run around and really tire himself out, and try again.

He's been running around for over an hour, and lately up and down the fence with a German Shepherd on the side for the big dogs. (about the length of a football field by the way). And he was finally lying down, taking a break at one point, and as soon as I came near him, he started running away again. There's a woman here trying to help me, enticing him with treats. He could care less.

Me: I know. When he's at the park, food has no value to him. He's just get's too excited. You can shove a treat in his mouth and he'll just let it drop.

(Wife in a panic) You're going to have to pick Josh up at the bus stop today!

Me: That's not til 4:00. You going to stay there all afternoon!! LOL

You've got to come and get him. I'm trapped here!

Me: OK. I should be there in about 40 minutes.

40 minutes later.....

Wife comes up to the front entrance to meet me, Koji following. Entrance is double-gated. I walk in through the first outside gate and close it behind me. Walk up to the second inner gate that provides access into the park itself, and open it.

Koji greets me. I grab his harness, take leash from wife. Koji now on leash. Wife can't stand it. Committed to never taking him there without me again. LOL! Oh well, she tried at least. ; )

That's hilarious. I remember my first few dog park trips with Lucy being like that. I bet she was extra pissed that Koji came right up to you without a problem.

OMG That is too funny! Dont tell her that. My friends shiba is that way. We just say "wanna go bub bye" no matter where we are they get excited and go. I had to read that to Chad and he laughed, gotta love life with a shiba.
What time did you guys end up leaving?

"What time did you guys end up leaving?"

We left right away. She had things to do, and I had to get back to work. So I took him home with me and worked from my home office the rest of the day. He was such a good boy. Just laid at my feet and let me work. Of course, he had tired himself out by then.

That is so funny! I've (so far) not had that problem.. Most of the time when we go to the dog park, Jazz just stands close by me or she walks up to the gate to leave.

Haha, your poor wife. I know a girl who had to wait four hours at the park one time until her Shiba was ready to leave. She refused to be caught.
