Wow, a new shiba mix (ugh)

edited November 2008 in General
From Northwest Source, an advert for pomeranian/shiba mix (OMG not again)

"RARE MIX... mother is small shiba inu with black/white/tan coloring and father is a sable pomeranian. These puppies have had 1st shots/dewormed/dew claw removed and are healthy and ready for good homes only. Socialized with other dogs as well as very friendly and love to be held. PERFECT PET for someone who wants a small dog that is a lap dog but at the same time loves to run outside and play..."

A shiba as a lap dog???? Pom Inu, Shibaranian, whatever. My question is, why?

    Hey there-

If you are truly interested in SHIBAS i can get you started in the right direction. If you want a mix- go to a shelter and save one.

I am a member in good standing of the National Shiba Club of America. Anyone I would even *consider* buying a Shiba from would also be a member.
The person you are talking about will NOT be a member. We thoroughly discourage the purposeful breeding of mixes- especially if it's just because you're looking for something cute.

Trust me- this breed, and any mix thereof is NOT just a cute little lap dog. You will quickly be disappointed should you go into it thinking that's what you're going to get. These dogs are firecrackers. They are smart bordering on cunning. The few people I have known that were silly (read: dumb) enough to purchase a Shiba without recognizing the dog's true potential very quickly turned them in to rescue (and commented on the fact that anyone who WANTED to own one must be crazy)

. This is a breed that has 6000 years of instinct bred into it saying "KILL THINGS THAT MOVE." They may be small, but they are by no means EASY to train, nor are they "lovey-dovey" dogs. If you want a dog that worships you, that enjoys sitting on your lap, that enjoys being petted and made much of, please look elsewhere. They are absolutely *horrific* animals in the wrong hands.

They are naturally dog-aggressive. Don't ever expect them to love other dogs. In the wrong hands they are human-aggressive, and this is a recipe for disaster. Their original function was to hunt and kill bear and wild boar in Japan- a function which many STILL serve in Japan. If you think that they cannot cause damage because they are small, you are absolutely and unequivically wrong.

If you are looking for a lap dog- please look into Pomeranians. If you are looking for an independent, cunning, challenging dog that KNOWS it owns YOU, then look further into Shibas. (I can refer you to some FANTASTIC breeders if you would like).

I can't imagine what a mix of Pom and Shiba would be. The only thing you could guarantee would be unpredictability. (Trust me...the last thing on Earth you want is an unpredictable Shiba).

I may seem blunt to the point of being rude- and I'm certainly not *trying* to be rude. What I AM trying to do is arm you with information so that you make the best possible decision in regards to your future companion. I've seen the results of people going into Shibas without *really* understanding them- and they are not pretty. Don't be fooled by how "cute" they are. These are first and foremost independent hunting dogs- not "bigger Pomeranians."

Most people won't be able to tell you what a Pomeranian/Shiba Inu cross acts like. This is because there won't be a set "type." We can generally predict temperaments in purebred dogs because they come from long lines of "similarily-temperamented" animals. Make an outcross between two breeds and all bets are off. Dogs from the same litter may not only have completely different personalities, but completely different conformation as well.

Please PM me if you're really interested in a Shiba Inu puppy. I adore this breed, and they're a joy to own- as long as you know it's no typical dog you're getting. I would only be too happy to help you.

^ that looks neither like a pom or a shiba.

Katie that question was deleted...what was it?

Rachael it was "Would a pom/shiba mix be a good dog for a 12-13 year old?"
  • edited November -1
    That was quick...

Right. And the answers were along the lines of.....

"I think they would be GREAT pets."

"Poms are known for being great with kids and other dogs, so any mix of that breed will have those characteristics."

Um......every Pom I've ever known was an ankle bitting terror!!!! And saying that just because one dog in the mix has a certain characteristic doesnt mean that the result of the mix will have it. I tried to find some pics of this mix and couldnt really find any.

Well in defense of the poms and basically all tiny dogs, they're usually aggressive because the majority of owners do not bother with any sort of training because of their size. With a proper owner they're really sweet dogs. My best friend in elementary school had a pom and he was just the sweetest little thing.

But those answers are why I stay away from Yahoo Answers. I try not to go out of my way to get pissed off.

Very disturbing stuff ill never understand some people.

I'm losing more and more faith in the average American's intellect by the hour. A Pomer Inu, just what the world was lacking! Honestly now!

I have met nice poms and nice shibas, but they were all owned by intelligent, responsible individuals. I've also seen what child-raised dogs become and about 90% of the time it isn't pretty no matter what the breed.

Jessica that dog is so adorable! How old do you think he/she is? How much does he/she weigh?

Jessica send him in my direction!

He is a bit of a dick. Mouthy in a "I may have to kill you way..."
But about 35-40lbs Taller skinnier than a shiba, more like small husky.

My huskies growing up were VERY mouthy and had to go to behaviorists and classes. And even then they liked to hold on to your arm. Never in a painful or mean way though.

As I am sure you can imagine, Huskies do not exactly thrive in a city pound environment...

Both of the huskies I had were rescues and they had so many issues to overcome because of their time/experience in shelters and rescue organizations. I had to learn how to train a dog, and had great help from the behaviorist that we hired. They turned out to be WONDERFUL dogs, but it took a lot of work. I have this thing for dogs that need a lot of work...I just want to take them in and teach them how wonderful this world can be to them, because then they turn into the best dogs.

Next year, when we buy our house and if the circumstances allow (and Miso and Sake are up for it), we will be rescuing another furry member of our family.

I still donate to the rescue in PA where we got one of our Huskies. That dog was the love of my life and taught me so much about myself and dogs in general.

I'll put a video of my mommy's pet store pom Buddy here if I can ever figure out how to work it. He is 11-12 (has papers of course ;) that's what counts right? Anyways, becuase he had such a crappy upbringing and lived in confinement and filth for his first 6 months at Scamps, he still looses control of his bowels/bladder when he is alone (anxiety ?) Anyways, I want to put a vid of him having one of his fits- he bares teeth and snaps, lunges, flails, spins and urinates if you try and touch him- he becomes a wild animal, it's really shocking. He hates, really hates Beebe and Ike and simply reviles all other dogs. Anyways, I saw that add and thought:

Buddy+Beebe= Shibaranian, what a great temperment, yeah. What awsome puppies that would make.

I know Jess, I wish I could rescue another dog right now. But unfortunatley, until that condo is sold and we buy a house we are stuck in a small apartment (luckly we have a nice fenced private backyard and gated courtyard). I will defanatly keep you in mind when the time comes though, I would love to help a shelter dog. Our first dog ever when I was growing up was a pound puppy and he was the best mutt ever!

I don't think a Pomer Inu would be good for anyone! ugh.
