you can give them frozen or thawed, i think its safer for them to crunch through the claws once thawed but then the chicken feet oddly resemble human digits.... :O I pack them in bags of 5, thaw them a day in advance, give one to each dog, that was Tsuki/Kitsu get one every 3 days and Hanzo gets one every other day.
We gave them both 2 and they are in love. All night Niko has been bringing us all her toys and bones-I think trying to trade with us. I swear that is what she is doing. It is hilarious.
I'll try just about anything. I prefer to not know what it is at first, so I don't have a preconception of what it should taste like. I avoid a lot of Thai, Korean, and Chinese foods though because of allergies that I have with certain things used in seasonings (palm oil, coconut & any derivitive).
we initially found chicken feet at a chinese grocer. Once he found out what we were buying them for, he asked us to only come when the feet he had became gamey, so we turned to hare-today.com instead. The dogs love them, but I was playing with them (the feet) one night and started to move the claws by pulling on the ligaments... so freaky! But interesting.... Don't they look a tad like human digits when raw???
I see they trim the nails on the dim sum menu, that is good news!
I've never eaten Chicken feet before, but I got a whole bag for free when Lynx was a pup. I don't mind feeding raw, I actually prefer it, but the feet were kinda weird because they still have claws -nods-.
Ha ha, on the day after one of our chicken slaughters at the farm, I found one of the chickens feet poking straight up out of a dog turd. That couldn't have felt good.
is there are bennefits to feeding the dogs chicken feet? Or is it just a fun treat because my dogs think pizza crust is a great treat even though i don't want them to have them....fiance
I cant feed the chicken feet they make me gag! I feed the chicken necks and turkey necks Boo loves them. The turkey necks might be a bit big for a shiba though. I feed them frozen because they are allot cleaner that way, and Boo thinks there like a popsicle!
I think the benefit is more for their teeth. Crunchy raw foods do wonder's for a dogs teeth & breath. Dogs who eat raw diets or who get to eat raw chews like bones, necks, feet, ect. rarely have to get their teeth cleaned.
the benefit of chicken feet (taken from hare-today.com, where I get my chicken feet)
"Chicken feet – Feet are cartilage. They are a natural unprocessed source of glucosamine and chondroitin. Studies have suggested that glycosaminoglycans and chondroitin sulfate may help reduce pain and inflammation from osteoarthritis, assisting in the healing process. While these products are available through health-food stores or a pharmaceutical medication through your veterinarian, you can give these to your dog directly by giving raw cartilage. Some people taught the benefits of shark cartilage, but there are no scientific studies to support these claims. (It is also ecologically unsound to kill sharks to harvest their cartilage.) On the other hand, increase dietary cartilage can do no harm, particularly in the face of arthritis."
I sought these out specifically for my Tsuki as a natural way to give her added glucosamine/chondroitin for her LP, plus like Sabrina said, because they have to crunch the feet and tear the skin, its also healthy for their teeth and minds. An all around good treat, if you can get past the point that they look like golum-esq people hands!! My dogs teeth are the brightest white that I've ever seen on a dog! Raw definitely works!
i also give chicken necks raw even with the teeny bones, the turkey necks are doable but more often they (shibas) do not finish them entire because they are larger than chicken necks... the chix necks have such smaller bones, I'd rather they chomp the turkey necks!
I did turkey necks for a while when I was on my raw kick. They were great, but again, I began to question the quality of the meat that I was purchasing from the store and I switched back to my favorite dehydrated raw/kibbled foods.
