15.5 week old male shiba

I was wondering when a puppy gets it's bushy fur.

Guinness doesn't have alot of fur he is one layer unlike Niko or his brother Quinn(which my dad owns)

He also not ask soft as the other two is. Is this common? His mom and dad are very bushy and soft.

Sake has been "sleek" since we got her, she has never been fluffy or bushy. Miso was a fluff ball when we got him at 12 weeks and then lost his "fluff" at around 6 months and is now a sleek boy.

Some Shibas do not get a "bushy" look. Nemo and his brother are very "sleek".

agreed, not all of them get the bushy-ever-shedding coats. THANK GOD! I prefer Tsuki's sleek over Hachi's never ending show coat!

I wonder if the fluffy vs sleek goes back to the bloodlines. [ie; show vs. working lines...] ...just a thought.

He looks cute to me either way :) ~

Toby never had a sleek look to him, he still has the busy kinda fur. I love it, hes so soft. :)

I think I read somewhere that there is a "moss coat" which is always puffy and perfect and great for show but on the downside continously sheds, vs the coat that blows twice a year which is also good for show---depending on the time of year :)

I think Moto would have been considered this moss coat. He never had a thin or sparse coat and shed perpetually. But he also had a full lush coat 365.

See Niko is very sleek but still sheds twice a year, my dads older shiba sheds with every season, and Guinness hasn't shed at all, i don't know if it is because he is still a baby and will not shed till the spring but his head is so soft, but his body is not as soft.

The body should be harsh to touch and almost hurt or be prickly if you touch your face to it (I like it when they are soft all over, more fun to squeeze).

awww! hes cute. well toby has had bushy fur since the day we got him. very soft all over although i do have a question...does anyone else has a shiba with "balding" elbows? the hair on toby's elbows is a bit thinner than the rest but its only like that on the elbows. any ideas?

His coat looks almost like how Tetsu's was when he was that age, especially the tail. His tail looked a lot skinnier than it does now. While he was growing, he had a soft coat that looked to be just undercoat fur. But I looked at the roots and noticed that he was starting to get guard hairs in. He didn't really start to fill out until about 5 months old. I have a feeling that Guinness will fill out.

Here's an idea, check out some pictures of when he was younger and compare them to him now. Check out the tail and see if there is any difference. You don't realize how much they have changed until you compare then with now.

Kayla-I heard that some dogs get thin elbow hairs from laying down too much. Also heard that there are some skin diseases that can cause that, but it usually occurs in older dogs.

What's it called if they're bushy but they still only shed twice a year?

well toby is deff an active pup so im not sure its the laying down, but i think iy may be from walking in the harness. rubbing up against the fur and breaking it off maybe. now that hes shedding it seems its growing back in a bit.

A "stockhair" coat: the classic double coat that blows twice a year with guard hairs being straight, stiff and shining, standing at least 45 degress off the body and longer than the thicker, duller and softer greasy undercoat.
