Shedding a ton?

edited January 2009 in General
Any other Shibas shedding a ton right now? I pet Toby and a tumbleweed came from his back. Which is abnormal. Its not very warm here, so I didn't quite understand the random blowing of his coat.

Tetsu is, and so it Tikaani (Siberian husky) like crazy. Everything is furry and a lot of the times it's too cold to go outside. But we're having a couple of "warm" days, so I think it's confusing their fur

I wouldn't say a ton, but my Shiba started noticeable shedding beginning about 3 weeks ago. He is 11 months old now and blew his puppy/summer coat in late summer, and had not shed since then until recently. I thought it was odd since I live in the Northeast, and on average, the weather has been typically cold lately.

I wasn't expecting any significant shedding again until March at least, when I figured he'd start blowing his winter coat. But this is my first Shiba and first winter with him, so I'm not sure what is "normal". I also thought that since he's not quite an adult, and this is his first winter, he may not be "dialed in" yet to a normal, seasonal pattern for this area.

Kitsu started really shedding again. The weather has been crazy, one weekend it was almost 60 degrees then this week its below 20 degrees and snowing. That might have something to do with it!

Mika finished shedding 2 months ago for her winter coat. Keigo hasn't shed his coat since last June!!!!

Bella completely blew her coat about a week ago. Nola's fur has just now started to come out. By the handful. Grr. This crazy weather has them thinking it is spring!

Remy must be broken or something. Aparently he hasn't ever blown his coat, but sheds constantly and a lot, and I mean A LOT!! I have to brush/groom him every other day just to keep it under control. He's done that ever since we've had him, so almost 2 months.

Remy may have a "moss coat".

Beebe and Ike have hair everywhere no thanks to that 55 degree Pineapple Express that melted away our 2 feet of snow last week.

We had a really mild spell over christmas too...it went from about -10C for the last month to about +5 for a week or so. Now its back below freezing. He is shedding a little more than normal right now, but I'm still not sure what 'normal' really is....other than LOTS!!

    What's a moss coat??

It's where the guard hair and the undercoat are the same length giving the dog an apperance as if he were carved from a block of foam (it's unlikely, this is a difficult coat to breed I guess). However, it sounds like it's really cold where you are so he may not need to really blow much coat. You can google it.

Most of our pups are blowing their coats [again] right now: Maui, Kaia, Fuji, Loa, Lani, and Hilo. I dunno if that means we will have a hard winter or if it means winter is almost gone. It's strange tho.

I think Hanzo has this moss coat, his guard hairs and undercoat are almost one in the same in most spots on him. He does a little shedding all the time, and even more in the last few weeks with the crazy temperatures. His hair also grew back in a unique way over his missing leg area, where I assume sutures were, etc. Its bunchy and bumpy, much like moss, and the hair comes out in little clumps from that area. His coat is certainly different from Tsuki and Kitsune, who had much different coats than even Hachi. Every single Shiba I've dealt with had a slightly different coat.. its interesting.

Interesting. I don't know about carved out of foam, but he has a tonne of muscle definition in his legs that make him look quite chiseled (sp?), especially at the rear. I don't know if he is just all jacked up lately or if its 'moss'. This pic was taken when he was about 10 mnths and sent to me by his previous owner. He does look pretty beefy here, but in the last 2 months, his definition has really started to show (though I've heard that shibas beef up a little in the 12-14 mnth period, which is where he is). On the weekend, my friend actually asked if we had him on the roids....haha

PS - looking at that pic again reminded me he has a really long tongue, I mean he's holding some back there, it's really quite rediculous! Must drive the lady shibas nuts....

Sake is ripped too. She is all muscle and you can see it!

    Remy is handsome.

Sake would love his tounge. She likes when Miso sticks his down her throat!

Is there such thing as a really big fluffy cream? Tsuki has that thinner-easy-to-see-muscle coat too..
  • edited November -1
I've never seen a fluffy cream.

WOW, she looks like she really jacked in that first pic!!

side quote that pic made me think of: "I'm gonna pump (clap)...you up!"

oh geez. Toby was horrible today, and its so cold out. I brushed him with the furminator, but I don't even know if it really did anything. He came in, and he still looked horrible.

Steph, is he itchy at all?
  • edited November -1
Without touching him it's hard to tell, but his guard hair and undercoat appear to be of equal length. If you look back through some of Ike's pics, you can see his guard hair is about 1/2 -1 inch longer than the undercoat for a comparison. Remy looks really nice. Big boy.

Nope, not itchy at all, hes just blowing his coat like hell. :(

Hmmm, that is strange. I wish I could help more. :( Love to Toby the Shiboku.

    Ick. :)

LOL, there is a video of their obsessive mouth licking, but it's not on you tube. If you click the picture below it will take you to my picasa page where you can watch the video:

So I took a closer look today and his undercoat is definately the same or damn close to the same length as his guard hairs.

Also, I'm pretty sure Remy is blowing or sorta blowing coat. It's not coming out in chunks, but I did get a FULL shopping bag off him about 20 min of grooming last night...and that is in addition to the huge ball that I got off him two days ago. I think explains why I've started to notice dog hair everyone this past week!!

Koji never really stopped shedding his undercoat since mid-December. Recently, that pace has picked up. Now that it's the end of February, with Spring around the corner, with all the hair that he's shed recently, and by the looks of him, I've concluded that he's already blown most of his winter coat. Most of what's left is concentrated around his hind quarters.

He's only a year old, so this is his first Spring blow. Not at all what I expected. I figured there would be little shedding until at least March and then an intense shedding period til around mid-April. Never would have guessed it would have happened this way, especially considering the pretty cold and snowy winter we've had in the Northeast.
