    AWWW Kai Ken Puppies!

I want a Shika so bad!

Yes, and if you go to her website links section, Peggy has a link to the youtube videos (there are about 6 or 7). Her new website looks super!

Sweety and Tekai and the mother and father of my boy. I think he takes more after Sweety in appearance.

Well both Aki and Maya are beautiful! It would be ironic if I could get one from that litter because Ichi's mom is named "Maya" as well. :P Bah, I gotta stop talking like I'm gonna get one, it'll only fuel the emotional side of getting one. God help me if I see puppy pictures from that litter because it'll be GAME OVER if I do.

...now if they would just reply to my email where I say I'm ready to put down a deposit...

"...now if they would just reply to my email where I say I'm ready to put down a deposit... "

Kenshi, having dealt with Peggy, she is very nice and helpful, but I don't think that she really stays up with her email and computers in general. Not everyone is as connected as forum members. But I do know that she very quickly returned my phone calls, so I would try and call her if I were in your position.

When I bought Kuma, I basically dealt with her via phone. Since that time, I have emailed her updates on Kuma and she is a slow responder via email (but not phone). But as I said, some people do not live by their computers and technology. :-) She loves to talk about her dogs - I think I always spoke with her for at least 45 minutes each and every time!

I've been e-mailing her questions and such, her response time has been about 5-10 days. I'm considering putting a deposit for a pup with her as well, she's not super far away and I'm liking her answers.

How many members have gotten shikas from her?
  • edited November -1
I was emailing her for a while, and her response time was anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks. At the end she gave me a phone call and was awesome to talk to. She provided me with a lot of information and in general was just a very nice person. She told me she was very busy and that's why it takes her so long to answer emails - I don't know if her situation has changed, but when I was talking to her, she was in the middle of moving AND working two jobs. I found it amazing she had any time to spend with her family, let alone answer calls and emails about her dogs.

I think Kris, Shan, and Tommy are the only ones on the forum who got puppies from Peggy. I think they are all littermates too???
  • edited November -1
Yes, they are all littermates and those are the 3 forum members that have Shikoku from Peggy. But she has had earlier litters (maybe 1 or 2), just those people are not forum members.

Peggy's stock came from the breeder in Holland and she imported them a few years after Katja got started (also with some Dutch stock [eg, Mike]), so there are fewer litters from her kennel since the dogs came to the US more recently.

Yes, Peggy is super nice and you can talk to her forever. :-) Plus she has 2 teenage daughters and husband, house, land and her job(s), so email checking is probably not her priority!

I saw her new website - very user friendly. I'm amazed at how much Sora looks like Sweety!

I finally got the chance to check out the website. Her Kai and other Nihon Ken are absolutely stunning! I really wanted to get a Shika from her but at the time of her and her entire kennel moving, email exchanges were less frequent, plus I had to consider all the other people trying to contact her. At first, it took probably 14 days before she replied to my initial email, and during that time, I thought she just ignored me. Then she replied and said she is still willing to speak with me! I wanted to meet her in person during the holidays because I was going to be in NJ at the time, but she never replied. Eventually, I decided to wait until I had my own yard, such as Katja and Brad suggested, before I got a Shika because I didn't want him/her to grow up in a townhouse with a lot of moving. My Shiba absolutely loves it though and wouldn't trade him for anyone, even a dog that won't eat cell phones :)

In a few years, I do plan on contacting her again :)

Yeah, the house we just bought in October has this terrific yard. It isn't huge, but it's fenced, and level. We have no grass, just huge, tall trees!

Just wanted to let you guys know that if anyone wants a Kai, Peggy has two puppies available. They are 7 weeks old, male and female.
  • edited November -1
She also reported to me that she has a 9-week old female Shikoku available. :)
  • edited November -1
Now is not the time for me to be hearing about available nihon ken! *plugs ears*
  • edited November -1
    Seriously. heehee.

If I had the monies, I'd jump on the opportunity. I am totally broke now, though. :(

    I want Kai and Shikoku!
  • edited November -1
Gahh!! I agree with Heidi!! It's easier to keep my self control knowing I have to wait for a Shika pup but if they're readily available it's utter torture!!! And a Shika female is the next dog I want to get too!! *covers eyes* la la la la la... (Covering ears loses it's meaning on the net hahaha)

    Must...not...look...at...website...can't...be...tempted...want...shika...SO...bad!

    Hey Kristin,
The 9-week old available female isn't on her website. I think it's only through private e-mail conversations, so there's some saving grace there. However, I looked at Aki and Maya and a litter by those two would definitely be gorgeous.

Yeah I know Jesse, but if I look at the website and see the parents...or any Shika for that matter...it will make me want to contact her! I promised my hubby that the Shika will wait for at least another year or two. :P

    Hey Kristin,
I'm in the same boat with my better half. However, you and your hubby are leaps ahead of us in that you already got your house! I am jealous of all that space your kids will be able to run around in.

ALMOST! We actually made the appointment with the fence guy today so our fence she be fully installed the day after we move in!

It makes me want a Shika even more knowing we will have the space. But, in a few years (and once our rental property in FLA gets sold) I won't have to work full time anymore and can devote more time to the dogs so it will be a better situation to bring a new dog into.

I still want to rescue a dog as well...

hey - if your fence is gonna be up already - we'd be willing to help you paint for a mini-break in MA! lol!

I originally joined this forum with the intent to get a shikoku from Peggy. That has since taken a spin into shiba rescue and now, well, I'm not sure if we will dive into shikoku ken ownership or not, at least in the near future until I can be home more or at least have a steady schedule. But every time I see one, it gets harder and harder to reason with myself!!

Jen! You and the kids are welcome up any time! Actually my wonderful Mother is flying out from California the first week we are in the house to help paint, etc. She is also AMAZING when it comes to tiling so she is going to re-tile the bathroom floor for us :). We call her Bob Villa.

But, like I said, everyone is welcome. Forum Meetup at My house! LOL

I understand about the Shika ownership as well. I really do want one because I think they are beautiful creatures, but on the other hand I love helping with NYC Shiba Rescue and now that we have the house we could possibly foster so that is another thing to think about.

There is A LOT involved when you think about adding another pack member. I know Miso and Sake would not mind since they are welcoming to every dog that comes into our home. I just want to be able to spend more time with them and really get to know them before we take that leap into a 3rd pack member and that won't happen until after I can switch to a part time job.

It is daunting thinking about 3+ isn't it? Its a bigger step than it seems when it actually happens.
(I was going to go into a paragraph, but I might blog about it instead to stop thread 'jacking :)
