We don't have an DSLR. But all I use is auto, sports mode, and movies. I figured out how to use the exposure and shutterspeed on the sports mode to get good action shots, but I've been to lazy to go further. Hopefully you'll be more motivated.
When you are learning, it is actually good to use the auto mode... But make sure you look at the settings the camera uses after each photo. This way you can get an idea of where to put your values when you take it off of auto. But play around with the settings too. When I was first playing around with my first D-SLR, I used auto (because I had never had an auto on an SLR before!), and then took a picture after that in manual using slightly different settings to see what it did. It was a lot of fun.
Hey Kristin, Make sure you turn on Image Stabilization (IS) for some of the photos with darker light. Your pictures look really great! You've inspired me to kick out my old E-volt 300 and take some pictures of my pup. We'll have a SPAM-off.
LOL Jesse. The house is decent size. The reason Miso is not in these shots is because he is a Pansy and doesn't like to get his feet on the grass and dirt :P He literally goes outside, takes one step off the deck, does his business, then hops back on the deck. Nut case he is.

My gosh she's so cute! Her silly sit is adorable. Was she holding her face like that or was that one of those lucky moments?
Jesse
This is her mid-trot. She prances around and it is pretty hysterical.
