I behave so well around...

I was reading Spuddy's thread about interacting with that 4 year old and got inspired:
You gotta appreciate all those little things they succeed at like that!

When I am walking Sage and there are kids riding bikes, wagons, skateboards around him, or those battery powered mini cars they ride in, I just say to myself, for ALL the pain that his dog-reactivity causes both of us over the years, here is a dog not worried about all these noisy kids and wheelie things right next to him, passing him. Bouncing basketballs, the new Ripstick skateboards- which kids have to make rather sudden jerky motions to ride, neighborhood girls hugging him... nail trimming is something else I am surprised he tolerates.

Reilly is wonderful around most things, (only thing I can think of is she is not a fan of gunshots) but I am especially surprised that she is so good around horses. I didn't teach her to be good around horses specifically, but she is calm and respectful even close up.

What are you pleasantly surprised your pup responds well to?

As an undergrad we used to have big get togethers at my house and she was always very good with a bunch of strangers in our house (although she would be in my room, not roaming around.) When people would enter my room she would be friendly with them as long as I was friendly too. She would also be playful on a shiba scale, meaning that she wouldn't barrage them with licks but she wouldn't mind being pet either.

Shira was up at my family's cabin on the Hudson river during the fourth of July. We were all out on the screen porch when fireworks started going off, so I stayed calm and took a peek over at her. She didn't even lift her head! The same with the huge thunderstorms we had. My childhood family GSD would hide under the table and whine until these things were over. Shira is getting better about letting people pet her, and let's out a bark if she is uneasy about something, but so far her only irrational fear seems to be of lawn mowers. Well, I guess with the spinning blades and all it's not too irrational :P

Honey is a lover of ALL people! She doesnt care if she's known them forever or if they are strangers walkng down the street. She races up to them and her butt goes into super wag mode. She LOVES kids!! Last year I took her with me everyday to pick up the kids from school. We would wait outside for the kdis to come out and ALL the kids would race up to us and ask to pet her. Of course after a few weeks of this all the kids knew her by name, and SHE knew which kids were the ones who had gooey hands from snack time. lol (UGH)

Honey is still working on meeting other dogs. She's just very "in your face" when she sees a new pup. We've tried the whole sit/stay thing....she just loses ALL focus when she sees a dog.

She's also VERY obsessive when we pull out the water hose....or the vaccuum. She goes NUTS! lol

OH! But the one thing that REALLY upsets Honey is when a storm rolls through. lol We can usually tell when one is coming because she'll stick to us like GLUE. Sometimes she can tell a storm is coming up to a day away. She wont whine.....she just follows us around and looks at us with her ears back and with those sad eyes.....like..."is it over yet?"

Tigers biggest success has been leave it. He leaves whatever I ask him, most times even another dog. It's the single command that I know will be successful (bar, of course, a few dogs. But dogs are an issue on their own) where ever we are, whatever it is he's being asked to leave it. He's also very good with other people as long as we like them and it isn't a small, jumpy, excited child.

He's also really good when you leave the house. Soon as the door opens and he hasn't got his lead on he sits by the door and lets you leave calmly. Soon as the doors shut he's up at it as if to say "I DID THE SIT WHY AREN"T I GOING TO WORK WITH YOU?" and it breaks my heart but at least I don't have to lock him in the front room to open my front door :)

Miso and Sake are EXCELLENT with door boundaries at our house. They will not door bolt, they know they are not allowed in the garage or the basement so if that door is open they just stand there looking into the garage/basement waiting for whomever is in there to come back out. They do greet us at the door after work, but they are so excited about seeing us they NEVER try to run out the front door.

Good dogs! I like these stories. I get so hung up on what's wrong and I need to fix or tolerate, its good to think about what's right.
